'Elephant
Baby' by Tobias Martin. A bronze sculpture of an African elephant with its baby calf, trunk raised in a gesture of vitality and connection, captures both majesty and tenderness. The sculptor renders the mother’s immense, muscular form with attention to proportion and naturalistic detail, emphasising the powerful shoulders, broad forehead, and the flowing curves of her trunk. Beside her, the smaller calf mirrors her stance, conveying dependence and curiosity, creating a dynamic interplay between strength and vulnerability.
The mottled brown patina enhances the realism and depth of the piece, echoing the textured skin of elephants and the earthy tones of the savannah. The tactile, leathery surface emphasises folds, wrinkles, and subtle contours, giving a sense of weight and life to the bronze. Polished highlights along the trunk, ears, and tusks catch light, adding contrast and animating the sculpture with a lifelike presence.
Beyond anatomical accuracy, the sculpture celebrates family, protection, and the enduring spirit of these iconic animals. The raised trunk symbolises vitality, luck, and communication, while the tender proximity of the calf highlights the importance of care and connection within elephant herds. This bronze transforms a fleeting moment in the wild into a timeless artwork, honouring both the grandeur and emotional depth of one of nature’s most majestic creatures.

Tobias Martin
Tobias Martin was born in Wiltshire, 12 miles from Stonehenge. Influenced by his idyllic rural upbringing, and the forces of nature and magic that permeated his childhood surroundings, these works have something of the mystical about them. After graduating from Saint Martin’s School of Art in 1999, he still remains and works in London. His work has been shown within many prestigious, including the Royal Academy. His work can be seen as an attempt to visually articulate a great epistemological challenge: that of the human mind encountering the intellectually imponderable. Each piece is approached with precise observation and an acute interest in the minutiae of the subject matter, manipulating the material with a delicacy and lightness of touch. Despite being realised in heavy materials such as bronze, the resulting piece achieves a sense of movement and character that conveys the essential spirit of the animal. Encompassing elements of sculpture, installation, drawing, performance and video - Tobias’ practice partly relies upon the translation of scientific research methodologies to the processes of art making. This is perfectly applied particularly Tobias’ animal sculptures which capture the characteristic essence of the individual species.
