About the Item
Edition of 12
'Tortoise' by Tobias Martin. A bronze sculpture of a brown tortoise captures the quiet strength, resilience, and enduring presence of this ancient creature. The sculptor emphasises the tortoise’s solid, rounded shell, with carefully modeled segments suggesting both texture and weight, giving a sense of protection and permanence. The head, subtly raised, and the short, sturdy legs convey alertness and slow, deliberate movement, while the gentle curve of the neck and slight turn of the eyes bring character and life to the figure.
The brown patina enhances the sculpture’s naturalistic qualities, evoking the earthy tones of the tortoise’s shell and skin. Variations in shading across the carapace and limbs create depth and visual interest, while polished highlights on the head, legs, and shell ridges catch light, enhancing the tactile appeal of the piece. The combination of smooth and textured surfaces invites close observation and adds to the sense of realism.
Beyond a faithful representation, the sculpture embodies symbolic qualities associated with tortoises: endurance, patience, and longevity. It transforms an often-overlooked creature into a striking work of art, celebrating its quiet dignity and resilience. This bronze becomes both a study in form and texture and a timeless homage to the beauty and enduring strength of nature.

Tobias Martin
Tobias Martin was born in Wiltshire, 12 miles from Stonehenge. Influenced by his idyllic rural upbringing, and the forces of nature and magic that permeated his childhood surroundings, these works have something of the mystical about them. After graduating from Saint Martin’s School of Art in 1999, he still remains and works in London. His work has been shown within many prestigious, including the Royal Academy. His work can be seen as an attempt to visually articulate a great epistemological challenge: that of the human mind encountering the intellectually imponderable. Each piece is approached with precise observation and an acute interest in the minutiae of the subject matter, manipulating the material with a delicacy and lightness of touch. Despite being realised in heavy materials such as bronze, the resulting piece achieves a sense of movement and character that conveys the essential spirit of the animal. Encompassing elements of sculpture, installation, drawing, performance and video - Tobias’ practice partly relies upon the translation of scientific research methodologies to the processes of art making. This is perfectly applied particularly Tobias’ animal sculptures which capture the characteristic essence of the individual species.
