About the Item
Edition of 5. Nico by Tobias Martin.
A bronze sculpture of Nico the silverback gorilla, presented as a life-size head bust and mounted on a patinated plinth, is a striking tribute to one of the most celebrated gorillas in captivity. The sculptor captures Nico’s commanding presence with meticulous attention to anatomy and character. His broad brow, deep-set eyes, and strong muzzle are powerfully modeled, while subtle details around the eyes and mouth suggest intelligence, gentleness, and the quiet dignity that made Nico so beloved.
The life-size scale enhances the immediacy of the work, allowing viewers to meet Nico at eye level, creating a profound sense of connection. The rugged texture of the bronze surface emphasises the strength and depth of his features, while smoother areas, such as the nose and brow ridge, provide contrast and invite touch. The patination, carefully applied in layered tones of deep grey, black, and subtle highlights, evokes the natural presence of a silverback, adding realism and gravitas.
The bust is mounted on a patinated plinth, grounding the piece and elevating it as both sculpture and monument. More than a portrait, this work honors Nico’s enduring legacy, celebrating the strength, intelligence, and emotional depth of a remarkable animal in a timeless bronze form.

Tobias Martin
Tobias Martin was born in Wiltshire, 12 miles from Stonehenge. Influenced by his idyllic rural upbringing, and the forces of nature and magic that permeated his childhood surroundings, these works have something of the mystical about them. After graduating from Saint Martin’s School of Art in 1999, he still remains and works in London. His work has been shown within many prestigious, including the Royal Academy. His work can be seen as an attempt to visually articulate a great epistemological challenge: that of the human mind encountering the intellectually imponderable. Each piece is approached with precise observation and an acute interest in the minutiae of the subject matter, manipulating the material with a delicacy and lightness of touch. Despite being realised in heavy materials such as bronze, the resulting piece achieves a sense of movement and character that conveys the essential spirit of the animal. Encompassing elements of sculpture, installation, drawing, performance and video - Tobias’ practice partly relies upon the translation of scientific research methodologies to the processes of art making. This is perfectly applied particularly Tobias’ animal sculptures which capture the characteristic essence of the individual species.
