Humpback Whale
Calf by Tobias Martin. A bronze sculpture of a Humpback whale swimming with its calf, patinated in electric mottled blue and white, captures both the majesty of the ocean and the tender bond between mother and young. The sculptor renders the sweeping curves of the whales’ bodies with fluid precision, emphasising the immense yet graceful bulk of the mother as she glides effortlessly through the depths. Alongside her, the smaller calf mirrors her form, its position close to her flank suggesting protection, guidance, and the intimate connection shared between the two.
The patination brings the piece to life with vivid energy. Electric blue tones ripple across the bodies, evoking the shifting light of the sea, while patches of mottled white suggest surf, spray, and the natural markings of the whales. This dynamic interplay of colour enhances the sense of motion, as though the pair are caught mid-swim in an endless marine journey. The smooth, tactile finish allows light to dance across the contours, accentuating the fluid lines of fins, flukes, and ridged backs.
Beyond its striking form, the sculpture symbolises nurture, resilience, and the continuity of life in the ocean. It is both a celebration of the humpback whale’s grandeur and a tender tribute to the enduring bond between mother and calf.

Tobias Martin
Tobias Martin was born in Wiltshire, 12 miles from Stonehenge. Influenced by his idyllic rural upbringing, and the forces of nature and magic that permeated his childhood surroundings, these works have something of the mystical about them. After graduating from Saint Martin’s School of Art in 1999, he still remains and works in London. His work has been shown within many prestigious, including the Royal Academy. His work can be seen as an attempt to visually articulate a great epistemological challenge: that of the human mind encountering the intellectually imponderable. Each piece is approached with precise observation and an acute interest in the minutiae of the subject matter, manipulating the material with a delicacy and lightness of touch. Despite being realised in heavy materials such as bronze, the resulting piece achieves a sense of movement and character that conveys the essential spirit of the animal. Encompassing elements of sculpture, installation, drawing, performance and video - Tobias’ practice partly relies upon the translation of scientific research methodologies to the processes of art making. This is perfectly applied particularly Tobias’ animal sculptures which capture the characteristic essence of the individual species.
