About the Item
Edition of 12
'Maximus' by Tobias Martin, a bronze sculpture of a polar bear sitting with its paws crossed, patinated in soft whites and creams, conveys a sense of calm authority and quiet contemplation. The sculptor captures the bear in a relaxed, seated pose, with its massive body grounded yet balanced, emphasising the rounded contours of the shoulders, back, and limbs. The crossed paws add personality and poise, suggesting a gentle intelligence and a serene confidence. The head, slightly raised, with attentive eyes and softly modeled muzzle, imbues the figure with character, making the bear appear both approachable and commanding.
The white and cream patination enhances the naturalistic qualities of the sculpture, evoking the texture and subtle tonal variations of Arctic fur. The tactile surface combines smooth areas with gentle texturing, highlighting the contours of the body while suggesting the layered softness of fur. Polished highlights along the head, paws, and shoulders catch the light, adding depth and life to the bronze.
Beyond physical likeness, the sculpture embodies resilience, strength, and dignity, reflecting the polar bear’s status as a symbol of endurance in harsh environments. It transforms a moment of repose into a timeless artwork, celebrating both the majesty of the species and the subtle beauty of its quiet presence.

Tobias Martin
Tobias Martin was born in Wiltshire, 12 miles from Stonehenge. Influenced by his idyllic rural upbringing, and the forces of nature and magic that permeated his childhood surroundings, these works have something of the mystical about them. After graduating from Saint Martin’s School of Art in 1999, he still remains and works in London. His work has been shown within many prestigious, including the Royal Academy. His work can be seen as an attempt to visually articulate a great epistemological challenge: that of the human mind encountering the intellectually imponderable. Each piece is approached with precise observation and an acute interest in the minutiae of the subject matter, manipulating the material with a delicacy and lightness of touch. Despite being realised in heavy materials such as bronze, the resulting piece achieves a sense of movement and character that conveys the essential spirit of the animal. Encompassing elements of sculpture, installation, drawing, performance and video - Tobias’ practice partly relies upon the translation of scientific research methodologies to the processes of art making. This is perfectly applied particularly Tobias’ animal sculptures which capture the characteristic essence of the individual species.
