About the Item
Edition of 12
'Nanook' by Tobias Martin. A bronze sculpture of a polar bear walking, patinated in soft whites and creams, conveys both the power and grace of this iconic Arctic predator. The sculptor captures the bear mid-stride, with one paw slightly raised and the head angled forward, suggesting purposeful movement across ice or snow. The strong, muscular form is carefully modeled, emphasising the broad shoulders, sturdy limbs, and distinctive contours of the body, while the subtle curves of the back and neck convey a sense of fluidity despite the animal’s immense weight.
The patination enhances the naturalistic presence of the sculpture. Layers of white and cream evoke the soft, dense fur of a polar bear, with gentle tonal variations that create depth and dimension. The tactile surface, combining smooth areas with subtle texturing, invites close engagement, suggesting the layered texture of fur while allowing light to catch and animate the contours of the form. Polished highlights along the muzzle, shoulders, and paws accentuate key features and contribute to a lifelike impression.
More than a study of physical form, the sculpture embodies resilience, endurance, and quiet authority. It transforms a fleeting glimpse of a polar bear in motion into a timeless bronze tribute, celebrating both the majesty and enduring spirit of one of nature’s most remarkable animals.

Tobias Martin
Tobias Martin was born in Wiltshire, 12 miles from Stonehenge. Influenced by his idyllic rural upbringing, and the forces of nature and magic that permeated his childhood surroundings, these works have something of the mystical about them. After graduating from Saint Martin’s School of Art in 1999, he still remains and works in London. His work has been shown within many prestigious, including the Royal Academy. His work can be seen as an attempt to visually articulate a great epistemological challenge: that of the human mind encountering the intellectually imponderable. Each piece is approached with precise observation and an acute interest in the minutiae of the subject matter, manipulating the material with a delicacy and lightness of touch. Despite being realised in heavy materials such as bronze, the resulting piece achieves a sense of movement and character that conveys the essential spirit of the animal. Encompassing elements of sculpture, installation, drawing, performance and video - Tobias’ practice partly relies upon the translation of scientific research methodologies to the processes of art making. This is perfectly applied particularly Tobias’ animal sculptures which capture the characteristic essence of the individual species.
