About the Item
Edition of 12
'Puffin' by Tobias Martin, a bronze sculpture of a puffin standing on rocks, finished with a rich blue patina, a mottled white belly, and touches of orange on the beak and feet, captures the charming presence and character of this iconic seabird. The sculptor portrays the puffin in a natural stance, body upright and balanced atop a rugged rock base, evoking its coastal habitat. The rounded form, slightly flared wings, and expressive head tilt convey alertness and personality, capturing the puffin’s whimsical yet determined nature.
The rich blue patina brings vibrancy and depth to the sculpture, suggesting the reflective tones of the sea and sky, while the mottled white belly provides a striking contrast that recalls the bird’s natural plumage. Bright orange accents on the beak and feet draw the eye, highlighting signature features and adding warmth and vitality. The tactile surface enhances the sense of life, with smooth and textured areas working together to convey the contours of feathers, the solidity of the rock, and the subtle movement of the bird.
Beyond a faithful depiction, the sculpture celebrates the puffin’s charm, resilience, and connection to rugged coastal environments. It transforms a fleeting coastal encounter into a lasting bronze artwork, inviting admiration for both the species’ character and the artistry of form, colour, and texture.

Tobias Martin
Tobias Martin was born in Wiltshire, 12 miles from Stonehenge. Influenced by his idyllic rural upbringing, and the forces of nature and magic that permeated his childhood surroundings, these works have something of the mystical about them. After graduating from Saint Martin’s School of Art in 1999, he still remains and works in London. His work has been shown within many prestigious, including the Royal Academy. His work can be seen as an attempt to visually articulate a great epistemological challenge: that of the human mind encountering the intellectually imponderable. Each piece is approached with precise observation and an acute interest in the minutiae of the subject matter, manipulating the material with a delicacy and lightness of touch. Despite being realised in heavy materials such as bronze, the resulting piece achieves a sense of movement and character that conveys the essential spirit of the animal. Encompassing elements of sculpture, installation, drawing, performance and video - Tobias’ practice partly relies upon the translation of scientific research methodologies to the processes of art making. This is perfectly applied particularly Tobias’ animal sculptures which capture the characteristic essence of the individual species.
