About the Item
Edition of 5
'Majestic Humpback Whale' by Tobias Martin. The whale swims gracefully through imagined waters, conveys a sense of weightless motion despite being cast in enduring metal. Its immense body curves with natural fluidity, while the elongated pectoral fins stretch outward like wings, capturing the animal’s unique elegance. The sculptor’s attention to surface detail—barnacle textures, striations along the throat, and the smooth expanse of the back—reveals a reverence for the whale’s lived presence in the sea.
The patina enhances this realism, with deep oceanic blues, verdigris greens, and warm bronze highlights catching light much like sunlight breaking the water’s surface. This interplay of color and sheen suggests depth and movement, making the whale appear as if it could surge forward at any moment. Symbolically, the sculpture speaks to the grandeur and mystery of marine life, embodying themes of freedom, endurance, and connection between humanity and nature. As a centerpiece, the bronze invites awe and contemplation, reminding viewers of the humpback’s role as both guardian of the oceans and enduring emblem of the wild’s sublime beauty.

Tobias Martin
Tobias Martin was born in Wiltshire, 12 miles from Stonehenge. Influenced by his idyllic rural upbringing, and the forces of nature and magic that permeated his childhood surroundings, these works have something of the mystical about them. After graduating from Saint Martin’s School of Art in 1999, he still remains and works in London. His work has been shown within many prestigious, including the Royal Academy. His work can be seen as an attempt to visually articulate a great epistemological challenge: that of the human mind encountering the intellectually imponderable. Each piece is approached with precise observation and an acute interest in the minutiae of the subject matter, manipulating the material with a delicacy and lightness of touch. Despite being realised in heavy materials such as bronze, the resulting piece achieves a sense of movement and character that conveys the essential spirit of the animal. Encompassing elements of sculpture, installation, drawing, performance and video - Tobias’ practice partly relies upon the translation of scientific research methodologies to the processes of art making. This is perfectly applied particularly Tobias’ animal sculptures which capture the characteristic essence of the individual species.
