About the Item
Edition of 12
The patinated bronze head of a cheetah captures the animal's taut elegance in a single, arresting study. The sculpture isolates the feline's keen profile—high cheekbones, hollowed eyes, and a narrow muzzle—rendered with an economy of line that suggests speed even in stillness. The artist's surface work persuades: subtle chasing and varied tooling catch the light, while a layered patina of greenish blue and burnished umber lends depth, as if the bronze had aged under savannah skies. Tiny incisions mark whisker roots; the ears are slightly flattened in quiet alertness. From every angle the musculature reads as latent energy, the planes of the skull elongated to imply aerodynamic grace. The eyes, recessed and polished, reflect a cool intelligence that pulls the viewer into a shared instant of concentration. This bronze is less an anatomical diagram than a portrait of temperament—concentration, restraint, and barely contained power. Placed against a neutral background, the warm metallic glow and cool verdigris contrast hypnotically, reminding us that bronze, like its subject, balances tautness and repose. The piece is a meditation on speed suspended, a moment held between movement and memory. It invites quiet contemplation and honours the wild's refined, fleeting beauty.

Tobias Martin
Tobias Martin was born in Wiltshire, 12 miles from Stonehenge. Influenced by his idyllic rural upbringing, and the forces of nature and magic that permeated his childhood surroundings, these works have something of the mystical about them. After graduating from Saint Martin’s School of Art in 1999, he still remains and works in London. His work has been shown within many prestigious, including the Royal Academy. His work can be seen as an attempt to visually articulate a great epistemological challenge: that of the human mind encountering the intellectually imponderable. Each piece is approached with precise observation and an acute interest in the minutiae of the subject matter, manipulating the material with a delicacy and lightness of touch. Despite being realised in heavy materials such as bronze, the resulting piece achieves a sense of movement and character that conveys the essential spirit of the animal. Encompassing elements of sculpture, installation, drawing, performance and video - Tobias’ practice partly relies upon the translation of scientific research methodologies to the processes of art making. This is perfectly applied particularly Tobias’ animal sculptures which capture the characteristic essence of the individual species.
