About the Item
Edition of 12
Dandy Jack by Tobias Martin is a bronze sculpture of a running jack rabbit, or hare, captures the exhilarating blend of fragility and power that defines this elusive animal. The form is elongated, limbs stretched taut in mid-leap, as if frozen in a fraction of a second. The artist uses bronze’s inherent strength to suggest motion, every curve of muscle and bend of limb emphasizing velocity. Long ears sweep backward, flattened by the imagined rush of air, while the slender body arcs with both tension and grace. The surface is richly patinated, layering warm browns with hints of green and black, which emphasize the textural contrasts of fur, sinew, and earth. Light catches the polished highlights along the legs and spine, heightening the illusion of speed and agility.
What makes the piece striking is its ability to capture not only movement but also the essence of survival. The hare’s alertness, the readiness to flee, is embodied in its flight. The sculpture becomes more than an anatomical study; it is a portrait of instinct and resilience, qualities that resonate universally. Displayed indoors or in a natural setting, the bronze offers a dynamic reminder of the wild—of energy, vulnerability, and the fleeting beauty of life in motion.

Tobias Martin
Tobias Martin was born in Wiltshire, 12 miles from Stonehenge. Influenced by his idyllic rural upbringing, and the forces of nature and magic that permeated his childhood surroundings, these works have something of the mystical about them. After graduating from Saint Martin’s School of Art in 1999, he still remains and works in London. His work has been shown within many prestigious, including the Royal Academy. His work can be seen as an attempt to visually articulate a great epistemological challenge: that of the human mind encountering the intellectually imponderable. Each piece is approached with precise observation and an acute interest in the minutiae of the subject matter, manipulating the material with a delicacy and lightness of touch. Despite being realised in heavy materials such as bronze, the resulting piece achieves a sense of movement and character that conveys the essential spirit of the animal. Encompassing elements of sculpture, installation, drawing, performance and video - Tobias’ practice partly relies upon the translation of scientific research methodologies to the processes of art making. This is perfectly applied particularly Tobias’ animal sculptures which capture the characteristic essence of the individual species.
