About the Item
An elegant pair of 1920's, patinated, bronze hounds initially conceived and created by master sculptor, J.E. Masson (1871-1932). This edition cast at the renowned Le Verrier art metal foundry in Paris. Mounted on a sandstone base and inset with a plaque naming both the artist and the foundry, and also noting that the original sculpture won a gold medal at the Salon des Artistes Francais.

Born to a modest family, Guyot lacked the funds for a formal education but was apprenticed to a woodcarver and gained valuable technical expertise through copying religious works from the 15th century. Turning his sights to the natural world, he frequently drew animals and plants in the Jardin des Plantes, transferring his studies to sculptures in the studio. A famous figure of the Montmartre disttrict of Paris, Guyot was the host of the famed artist salon building, the Bateau-Lavoir from the time of Cubism.
