Photorealist Art

PHOTOREALISM

A direct challenge to Abstract Expressionism’s subjectivity and gestural vigor, Photorealism was informed by the Pop predilection for representational imagery, popular iconography and tools, like projectors and airbrushes, borrowed from the worlds of commercial art and design.

Whether gritty or gleaming, the subject matter favored by Photorealists is instantly, if vaguely, familiar. It’s the stuff of yellowing snapshots and fugitive memories. The bland and the garish alike flicker between crystal-clear reality and dreamy illusion, inviting the viewer to contemplate a single moment rather than igniting a story.

The virtues of the “photo” in Photorealist art — infused as they are with dazzling qualities that are easily blurred in reproduction — are as elusive as they are allusive. “Much Photorealist painting has the vacuity of proportion and intent of an idiot-savant, long on look and short on personal timbre,” John Arthur wrote (rather admiringly) in the catalogue essay for Realism/Photorealism, a 1980 exhibition at the Philbrook Museum of Art, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. At its best, Photorealism is a perpetually paused tug-of-war between the sacred and the profane, the general and the specific, the record and the object.

Robert Bechtle invented Photorealism, in 1963,” says veteran art dealer Louis Meisel. “He took a picture of himself in the mirror with the car outside and then painted it. That was the first one.”

The meaning of the term, which began for Meisel as “a superficial way of defining and promoting a group of painters,” evolved with time, and the core group of Photorealists slowly expanded to include younger artists who traded Rolleiflexes for 60-megapixel cameras, using advanced digital technology to create paintings that transcend the detail of conventional photographs.

On 1stDibs, the collection of Photorealist art includes work by Richard Estes, Ralph Goings, Chuck Close, Audrey Flack, Charles Bell and others.

Mulholland Drive Original Photorealistic Oil Enamel Colorful Painting on Canvas
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Ross Tamlin's unique photorealistic compositions merge traditional painting methods with modern industrial techniques to create captivating works of art. Using layers of oil and enamel paint, Tamlin creates an illusion of corrugation that adds depth and texture to his pieces. His use of industrial imagery and found objects is a nod to contemporary art, while his bold color palette and incorporation of text is a nod to the Pop Art movement. Tamlin created this one-of-a-kind, vibrant, and colorful painting measuring 44 inches high by 42.5 inches wide and 1.25 inches deep with oil and enamel paint on canvas. The sides of the canvas are painted in a continuation of the front eliminating the need for framing. In addition to being signed by the artist on the front, the artwork also comes with a certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery. The certificate guarantees the authenticity and provenance of the artwork. Free delivery is available for those in the local Los Angeles area, and affordable worldwide shipping is available for US and international art collectors. In this artwork, Tamlin reworks the traditional idea of landscape painting by incorporating text and familiar places' names, such as ski resorts, painted in large letters over the colorful photorealistic painted corrugated metal. This photorealistic painting by Ross Tamlin is so expertly executed that it perfectly mimics the texture and appearance of corrugated metal, even when seen in person. However, upon much closer inspection from the side at a nearly 90-degree angle, the levelness of the canvas is revealed, allowing you to appreciate the skillful brushwork of oil and enamel paint that gives the amazing illusion of depth and texture. With meticulous attention to detail, Tamlin imparts extraordinary depth to the painting, creating a finish that emulates the shine of polished metal and further enhances the piece's realistic appearance. This original artwork stands as a testament to Tamlin's remarkable talent and precision, demonstrated through the inclusion of even the smallest details, such as the masterfully painted rusty rivet holes. Tamlin's works are represented by Artspace Warehouse Los Angeles and are held in private collections worldwide, including Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Singapore, the USA, Switzerland, and France. Corporate collections include ING Bank, Babcock & Brown, Barclays Bank, Saville Hotel Group, Savills Property Group, Minter Ellison, Hai Win Shipping, Allkotes Pty Ltd, Blue Scope Steel Pty Ltd, Sieper & Co., A. The Surprised Wood Duck - Photorealistic Bird Portrait, Yellow Background
Located in Chicago, IL
Painted with such exacting detail it is hard to believe a human hand can be so exacting. This piece is framed in a simple wooden frame measuring 15 x 18 inches. Rick Pas The Surprised Wood Duck acrylic on panel 12h x 15w in 30.48h x 38.10w cm 15h x 18w x 1d in (framed) RPA023 ARTIST'S STATEMENT Creating is an addiction. With all the highs and lows you would expect. I am interested in the surface textures and creating paintings that portray them in realistic detail. Hopefully a viewer will feel they can run a hand over the feathers and moss, or grasp an object in the painting. This detail is usually composed in an abstract design. The design can occur naturally or be arranged by me. Screaming Young Kestral II - Photorealistic Bird Portrait, Cloud Covered Sky
Located in Chicago, IL
Painted with such exacting detail it is hard to believe it is not a photograph. This piece is framed in a simple wooden frame measuring 27 x 27 inches. Rick Pas Screaming Young Kestrel 2 acrylic on panel 12h x 12w in 30.48h x 30.48w cm RPA016 ARTIST'S STATEMENT Creating is an addiction. Stephanie Serpick, Interior Visions 8, 2023, Oil On Panel, Realism
Located in Darien, CT
Intimate paintings represented by unmade beds and tossed sheets, absent of any human evidence, on intentionally blank, somewhat rough backgrounds. The empty bed in these paintings represents a place for grief, isolation or healing. As such, the work speaks to our shared feeling of grief, with the understanding that while we all suffer in our individual ways, suffering is universal. Source material for this work are photographs the artist has both taken and found, and the intimate size of the paintings references the intimate nature of the subject matter. The backgrounds of the paintings are repeatedly painted and sanded, to create a frame and backdrop for the bedding that is flat, yet rough with work and time. The bedding itself is seen from different perspectives, but still indicates a scene of desolation and despair. While the series began in the fall of 2016, recent events—including the pandemic—have provided a new dimension to the work and have compelled Serpick to consider the themes in light of these events. Our forced isolation and the challenges it has brought to our physical and mental health provides an additional shared experience from which to consider grief and eventual healing. Biography Stephanie Serpick is a painter whose work explores themes of isolation, grief, and healing. Her work has been shown in various exhibitions in the U.S. and internationally, and she is a fellow at several residencies, most notably at the Florence Trust Studios in London, MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts, and the Vermont Studio Center, where she was awarded a full fellowship and stipend to attend. Recent exhibitions include solo shows at Sweet Lorraine Gallery in Brooklyn, the College of Southern Nevada, and a two-person exhibition at The Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute at the Museum of Art at Pratt in Utica NY...
