Carving Set with Antler Horned Handles
Boar
s Head Sterling Silver, circa 1880
By Gorham Manufacturing Company
Located in Incline Village, NV
Very unusual fine quality three piece carving set; made of antler horned handles which end in a sterling silver figure of a Boar's Head. Red glass or perhaps jeweled eyes. The three pieces are comprised of a carving knife (16" long), a carving fork (12 1/4" long, with accommodation to rest horizontally), and a knife sharpener (14 1/4" long).
The neck and back of the Boar's head are handcrafted and wrapped with a highly decorated relief floral, acorn, and leaf pattern, in sterling silver. Notice the fine detail of the Boar's hair. The other side of the horned handle is also wrapped and decorated in a sterling silver floral, acorn, and leaf relief pattern, and is marked accordingly with "STERLING", "H 4", and several other noticeable hallmarks (see images),
circa 1880.
Outstanding condition with no alterations or repairs.
Manufacturer seems to be American; the blade of the carving knife is embossed "Gorham m'f'g co."(see image). This is an American silver company...
