"October Afternoon" Maintains the appropriate markings along with "New York, Published by N. Currier 152 Nassau Street. (The firm was located here in lower Manhattan from 1837-1872) The lithograph illustrates two men and their dog with young son (hunting rifle over shoulder) in tow, returning from the rabbit hunt with their catch being presented to the lady of the house with baby in arms. The gated mansion is in the background while geese float upon the fertile pond in the background. In addition to the Amon Carter Museum in Dallas, an example of "Pleasures of Winter" is in: The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Bequest of Adele S. Colgate, 1962) Museum of Fine Arts Boston (Donated by Lee M. Friedman) The Library of Congress The Yale University Art Gallery (Gift of Mabel Brady Garvan Collection) Dimensions: actual= 16 1/2" h x 23 13/16" w matte= 19 1/2" h x 25 1/4" w folio= 21 1/4" h x 27 3/4" w with frame= 26 1/4" h x 32 1/4" w frame= 1 1/4" burl bird's eye maple It is in very good all original condition; and housed and professionally mounted in a fine quality and attractive bird's eye maple wooden frame with preservation backing and frontal protective glass (important when dealing with 170 year old lithographs); it is the rare and desirable Currier large folio sheet example in fine original color. There is some slight foxing to the cream border and minor fading (see images), The larger folios are more rare because they appealed to the wealthier sector of the population and were more expensive, thus fewer were made, albeit, knowing their more discerning customer base, there was more attention given to detail; hand coloring, and quality for example. This example has been framed and housed in museum quality conservation backing for over 80 years. I have had it professionally taken apart and I inspected the folio visually, and examined it with a black light and loop; as a result, I guarantee and can attest to the accuracy of my description of the lithograph. I then had the folio professionally remounted in it's original frame with an upgraded preservation backing (see images of original folios out of frame and for confirmation of inspection). This lithograph has no tears, no touch up paint, and no glued or taped repairs. This is one of the four iconic and highly desirable set of lithographs made by Nathaniel Currier (1813-1888) dated 1855 from the American Country Life series. They are named; Spring "May Morning"; Summer "Summer Evening"; Fall ""October Afternoon"; and Winter "Pleasures of Winter". The lithograph was produced from the painting of well known artist Frances (Fanny) Flora (Bond Palmer (1812-1876). She painted typical American scenes of daily American life that were used by Currier for years to come. She was an accomplished artist by the time she migrated to the United States from England, and Currier commissioned her to do the country scenes for this series. The lithograph reflects an affluent life style, showcasing grandiose homes and glamorizing the rural way of living as urban areas became more densely populated with the tidal wave and arrival of immigrants. Note the haystacks and a horse drawn hay wagon. The large and well built farm house stands proudly over the scene with the village in the background. Vintage Lithograph Johnny Friedlaender: 1912 - 1992 circa 1968 Very nicely framed with gold frame and linen mat. Ready to hang. Frame Size: 21" W x 23 3/4" H Visible Image Size: 14" W x 17" H "Johnny Gotthard Friedlaender (1912-1992), printmaker and painter, was born in Pless, Prussian Silesia (Germany) on June 21, 1912, the son of a pharmacist. He moved to Breslau in 1921 and, in 1928, he enrolled at the Breslau Art Academy where he attended master classes taught by Otto Mueller, a member of Die Brücke. During his academy years Friedlaender worked in lithography and etching. In 1930, he moved to Dresden, where his work was included in group exhibitions at Galerie J. Sandel and, in 1936, he traveled to Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Austria, France, and Belgium. Friedlaender and his young wife fled the Nazi regime in 1937 settling in Paris as political refugees. In 1938 and 1939, Friedlaender worked at the literary weekly magazine Marianne on Paul Chadourne's recommendation. From 1939 to 1943 he was interned in a series of concentration camps. After the war, the Friedlaenders returned to Paris in 1945, in 1947 he became a member of the Salon de Mai, and in 1950 he became a French citizen. "Friedlaender worked for various journals and focused on etching as his main medium of expression. He became one of the great innovators in color printmaking and a school formed in Paris around his work as a painter and printmaker. "Hoffman House Banquet Cigar" Hand Painted Lithograph American circa 1892 Rare

Probably one of a kind, this very rare hand painted lithograph image is advertising the world famous cigar and maker. I have never seen this image before in all of the years I've been dealing in advertising. This grandiose lithographed image has it all, with copious scenes and participants. Let's start with what is being advertised; as printed at the top "Hoffman House Banquet Cigar". Chicago tobacconist, Edward Hoffman, started his cigar business with a small family run operation in 1857. By 1868 he had blended the finest tobaccos available and soon was known to be the maker of the finest cigars in the nation. His signature risque image of "Nymphs and Satyr" embodied his packaging and advertising, as evidenced by the over the top bar scene here in this lithograph with the nymph scene appearing on the wall to the right. The actual bar room lounge depicted here in this Hoffman lithograph is the late 19th century New York famed "Hoffman House Bar", with all of it's excesses and barroom accoutrements, gracing the walls and furnishings. McKenney and Hall Hand-Painted Lithograph Rant-Che-Wai-Me , circa 1837

"Rant-Che-Wai-Me " translates to " Female Flying Pigeon " which is indicated on this hand-painted color lithograph, made by McKenny and Hall and dated 1837. It was published by E.C. Biddle in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and is one of the many Indians (approximately 120) that are portrayed in the major work, "History of The Indian Tribes of North America, Volumes 1-3" by Thomas McKenny and James Hall (from the Library of Congress). Along with Catlin's "North American Indian Portfolio" these are the two most important works of 19th century North American Indian study. McKenny's work was based on his travel of the west in the late 1820's. Thomas Hall was the "academia" member of the team. Charles Bird King painted the Indian portraits which hung in the Indian Gallery of the War Department. One by one the chiefs and other Indians were brought in to sit for portraits. Other portraits were loosely based on another painter who had traveled with McKenny, J.O. Lewis. The book with the folios and hand-painted lithographs was done in 1836. The significance of this is, that following the transfer of the paintings to the Smithsonian all of the paintings were destroyed in a fire in 1865. So all we have to chronicle those images are these McKenny-Hall lithographs. Any complete versions of McKenny's folio work are very rare and exist in a few private collections, museums, the Smithsonian etc. There are very few complete versions and most of the lithographs have been removed for framing to display as was this one. This is an authentic and original first edition dated 1837 from the "History of The Indian Tribes of North America" by McKenny and Hall. One way to validate authenticity is that on most of the folios the print comes through slightly on the front from leaving it's mark on the back of the page. Along with the folio, each Indian or scene was described in detail. This is a wonderful, authentic and original, article of Americana Provenance: This particular lithograph has impressive provenance having come from the Sondley Library in Asheville, North Carolina. It had been bequeathed to that library by Forster Alexander Sondley (1857-1931). F.A. Sondley was a successful attorney who studied American history and geography and collected Civil War and American Indian artifacts. The seal of the Sondley library is impressed as a round circle on the lithograph. A simple but elegant one inch gold leaf frame surrounds the lithograph which is: 19" wide x 23 3/4" high in frame; 17" wide x 21 3/4" high under glass; and matted to 10 1/4" wide x 14 1/2" high. This is an iconic Western image from the painting by pre-Civil War artist, William Tylee Ranney done in 1850. Ranney was born in Connecticut in 1813. In 1836 after the battle and subsequent fall of the Alamo , he enlisted to fight in the Texas Revolution. Even though he stayed for only a year the experience was enough to inspire his love for the West and express his influence in oil paintings from that period. He died of tuberculosis in New Jersey at the age of 44 in 1857. His works are in several museums: Buffalo Bill Museum, Cody, Wyoming; Corcoran Art Gallery in Washington; and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
