The brooch trend has been building all year, from Kendrick Lamar Brooches have been trending all year, from the one Kendrick Lamar sported in January at the Super Bowl to those bedecking Rihanna and Zendaya at the Met Ball this spring. Now, Julia Roberts has thrown her own pin in the ring, displaying a distinctive approach to accessorizing with the jewels at the New York Film Festival this past weekend.

The actress was there to support After the Hunt, the new Luca Guadagnino film she stars in alongside Ayo Edebiri. Roberts plays a professor, and her outfit for the movie’s North American premiere was collegiate chic indeed: a blue-gray Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood suit with a confetti-like text motif in pink. A collection of brooches atop her blue tie added yet more personality to the ensemble. As writer Marion Fasel notes in her newsletter, The Adventurine, Roberts has been making more-playful jewelry moves now that she’s no longer Chopard’s Global Ambassador.

Her festival look was something of a collage in metal and stones, with an indiscriminate mix of materials and a variety of shapes and sizes. This particular brooch idea seems best suited to maximalists and committed jewelry lovers — we’d imagine that tie felt pretty heavy with all those pins affixed to it.
