Finding the Right Evening-bags-minaudieres for You
Vintage and designer evening bags and minaudières are elegant accessories that can elevate an ensemble and add an air of sophistication.
Evening bags began as coin purses and pouches. They were practical accessories before travel necessitated large cases and handbags eventually emerged and became a fashion statement. Evening bags grew in popularity with both men and women and, by the early 14th century, included details like embroidery and fine materials such as silk. As women began carrying hand fans, calling cards and perfumes, the evening bag became roomier while keeping its compact charm. Some designers added a thin shoulder strap. Today, the simplicity of a clutch or luxury evening bag remains as stylish as ever.
Minaudières are ornamental cases designed to hold personal items such as jewelry or cosmetics. A version of a vanity case, the minaudière was pioneered in 1933 by Charles Arpels of Van Cleef Arpels. Made from metal, it could be engraved, decorated with precious stones or lacquered. The decade saw the popularity of these jewel-like pieces and other evening bags with Hollywood celebrities and others.
Though some of the world’s best-known luxury brands followed suit, minaudières are now made by only a small number of fashion houses such as Judith Leiber, Chanel, Versace and Hermès.
Shop an array of luxury designer evening bags and vintage minaudières in a range of designs, colors and styles to complement any outfit on 1stDibs.
- When were beaded bags popular?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Beaded bags became very popular in the late 1800s, first in France where the fashion of the day was established. As women’s clothing became more form-fitting, they lost pockets which necessitated carrying a handbag. Small beaded bags were the perfect accessory and they allowed a woman to show off her beading skills. Find a collection of vintage and modern beaded bags on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Identifying an antique bead is a careful art. First inspect the bead for any seams that could indicate it was molded in a contemporary fashion. Antique beads tend to have a larger center hole. Inspect the bead for signs of natural age. An expert can help you confirm the approximate age of your bead. Shop a range of antique beads from top sellers on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 24, 2024To tell if a beaded purse is an antique, first look at the frame. Antiques will usually have die-stamped frames, so you should be able to see the pattern on both sides of the metal. The frame is typically cast with newer bags, resulting in the pattern only being on one side. Next, examine the clasps. If your bag is antique, you should be able to detect a gap or seam where the maker soldered on the clasp, while a newer reproduction will frequently have a one-piece clasp and frame with no seams. Finally, look at the interior lining. Antique purses often have a ribbon sewn onto the seam where the lining meets the frame, but this detail will usually not be present on a reproduction. If you have doubts about your bag's age, consult a certified appraiser or knowledgeable antique dealer. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of beaded bags.
