Questions About Art And Sports

There really is no difference between a sport coat and a sport jacket. Both terms describe a collared jacket worn over a shirt for occasions that call for business casual or upscale casual dressing. Often patterned, sport jackets differ from dressier suit jackets, which tend to feature solid colors or very subtle prints. Explore a diverse assortment of sport coats and blazers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 25, 2024
What a blazer vs. a sport coat is starts with the level of formality. Generally, a sport coat is more informal than a blazer and best suited to business casual and weekend wear. How people typically style them also varies. A blazer usually goes along with pants in a matching color or print, while a sport coat may be paired with a variety of trousers or even jeans. Explore a selection of blazers and sport coats on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, JLC Reverso can be used as a sports watch. The art deco classic was designed for the British polo playing community, and sported a reversible watch face, to protect the glass from being hit during the game. On 1stDibs, you can shop the look directly from some of the top sellers around the world.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 15, 2023
The Chopard Happy Sport watch isn’t waterproof. However, it is water-resistant to 30 meters. A waterproof watch has a specially designed seal that completely blocks out water, while a water-resistant timepiece features some protection but can leak if fully submerged. On 1stDibs, shop a selection of Chopard Happy watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 9, 2024
To tell a sport coat from a suit coat, consider its overall look. Suit coats are more likely to be solid-colored or have very understated patterns, such as fine pinstripes. On the other hand, sport coats may show off prints, unique buttons, patches on the elbows and other bold features that make them stylish picks for casual occasions. If the jacket comes with a coordinating pair of pants in an identical fabric, it is also usually a suit coat, as sport coats are typically solid separately. Shop a wide range of sport coats and suit coats on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 20, 2024
The difference between Philipp Plein and Plein Sport is that the two are distinct brands designed by German fashion designer Philipp Plein. His eponymous brand is a collection of high-end clothing and accessories for men, women and kids that features everyday looks that incorporate bold details, such as skulls, oversize logos and rhinestone embellishments. Plein Sport is a luxury activewear line that was launched in 2016. The label's pieces have a similar dramatic look but are intended for wear during workouts and sports training. On 1stDibs, find a selection of Philipp Plein apparel and accessories.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 30, 2024
Art collectors buy their art from a few places. They may attend auctions to bid on works or attend gallery exhibitions to purchase pieces. Some arrange to buy art through dealers, while others shop on trusted online platforms to find paintings, prints, sculptures and other works. Explore a diverse assortment of art on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 25, 2019

Fine art is a category of art comprising works with purely aesthetic purpose, as opposed to applied art, which serves a practical function.

  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 21, 2024
In contemporary art, conceptual art is a movement that began in the 1960s. Artists producing conceptual art assign more importance to the idea behind the art than to the piece itself. An example is Joseph Kosuth’s One and Three Chairs, a piece consisting of a real chair, a photograph of a chair and the dictionary definition of the word chair. When the work was displayed, Kosuth included instructions for any chair to be photographed and then displayed beside its image. In this way, the chair itself is not the artwork. Rather, the art comes from examining the way the object, image and words provide competing and complementary definitions of what a chair is. Find a large selection of fine art on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Western art can reference art made in the American West, typically at the end of the 19th century. It can also reference any type of art that comes from the “west,” meaning a region that shares a European tradition, including the United States and Canada. On 1stDibs, find a variety of original artwork from top artists.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2024
Many people consider KAWS’s art type to be Pop art. The style first emerged in the 1950s. In stark contrast to traditional artistic practice, Pop art’s practitioners drew on imagery from popular culture, using things like comic books, advertising, product packaging and other commercial media to create original paintings, prints and sculptures that celebrated ordinary life in the most literal way. In his work, KAWS similarly appropriates pop phenomena like Mickey Mouse, the Smurfs, the Simpsons and SpongeBob SquarePants. Shop a selection of KAWS art on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 22, 2024
Yes, mandala art is folk art. The definition of folk art is art that reflects the sociocultural characteristics and values of a particular group of people. Mandala art fits this definition due to its association with the Hindu and Buddhist faiths. On 1stDibs, explore a selection of folk art from some of the world's top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 15, 2019

The main difference between Art Nouveau and Art Deco is that the former is detailed and ornate, and the latter is sharp and geometrical. When the movement started at the end of the 19th century, Art Nouveau was heavily influenced by nature and the curved lines of flowers. Art Deco, which became popular in the beginning of the 20th century, was inspired by the geometric abstraction of cubism.

  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 26, 2024
The difference between modern art and contemporary art comes down to age. Contemporary art refers to art produced by artists who are still alive or were active during the 1960s and later. Modern art is the term for artworks made between 1850 or 1860 and 1960. On 1stDibs, shop a large collection of modern and contemporary art.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 26, 2024
The style of Keith Haring's art is Pop art. This style emerged in the 1950s, when artists first began drawing on popular culture when producing original paintings, prints and sculptures. Haring found his inspiration in cartoons, adapting the style for his paintings, prints and murals that addressed the universal themes of death, love and sex, as well as contemporary issues, like the crack cocaine and AIDS epidemics. Find a range of Keith Haring art on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 7, 2024
The difference between an art dealer and an art broker is who owns the artwork involved in the transactions they facilitate. Art dealers often own the works directly. They purchase them from artists, other art dealers or individual owners and then sell them to buyers. An art broker is someone who connects potential art buyers with sellers without owning the art themselves. On 1stDibs, find a large selection of fine art from some of the world's best galleries and dealers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 25, 2019

Fine art denotes work of aesthetic value but no functional purpose, whereas decorative art is both visually appealing and functional.

  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 25, 2019

The term contemporary is applied to art by 21st-century artists; modern art refers to works created from the1880s and through the 1960s.

  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Erté is a pseudonym for Romain de Tirtoff, an artist who created glamorous illustrations of prosperity and luxury. The clean lines and geometric patterns took inspiration from Japanese prints and Greek pottery. Shop a selection of Erté pieces from some of the world’s top art dealers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 14, 2024
RETNA art is the name of art produced by the artist RETNA. Born Marquis Lewis on March 24, 1979, in Los Angeles, California, he joined the city’s mural scene as a teenager. He was especially inspired by local graffiti and adopted the name RETNA from a Wu-Tang Clan song as his artist’s tag. In the mid-1990s, he began making murals on walls, trains and freeway overpasses throughout the city, later transforming from a street artist to a break-out star in the contemporary art world. Retna has also collaborated with major fashion brands, including Nike, Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Helmut Lang. Explore a variety of RETNA art on 1stDibs.
