Finding the Right Storage-case-pieces for You

Of all the vintage storage cabinets and antique case pieces that have become popular in modern interiors over the years, dressers, credenzas and cabinets have long been home staples, perfect for routine storage or protection of personal items.

In the mid-19th century, cabinetmakers would mimic styles originating in the Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI eras for their dressers, bookshelves and other structures, and, later, simpler, streamlined wood designs allowed these “case pieces” or “case goods” — any furnishing that is unupholstered and has some semblance of a storage component — to blend into the background of any interior.

Mid-century modern furniture enthusiasts will cite the tall modular wall units crafted in teak and other sought-after woods of the era by the likes of George Nelson, Poul Cadovius and Finn Juhl. For these highly customizable furnishings, designers of the day delivered an alternative to big, heavy bookcases by considering the use of space — and, in particular, walls — in new and innovative ways. Mid-century modern credenzas, which, long and low, evolved from tables that were built as early as the 14th century in Italy, typically have no legs or very short legs and have grown in popularity as an alluring storage option over time.

Although the name immediately invokes images of clothing, dressers were initially created in Europe for a much different purpose. This furnishing was initially a flat-surfaced, low-profile side table equipped with a few drawers — a common fixture used to dress and prepare meats in English kitchens throughout the Tudor period. The drawers served as perfect utensil storage. It wasn’t until the design made its way to North America that it became enlarged and equipped with enough space to hold clothing and cosmetics. The very history of case pieces is a testament to their versatility and well-earned place in any room.

In the spirit of positioning your case goods center stage, decluttering can now be design-minded.

A contemporary case piece with open shelving and painted wood details can prove functional as a storage unit as easily as it can a room divider. Alternatively, apothecary cabinets are charming case goods similar in size to early dressers or commodes but with uniquely sized shelving and (often numerous) drawers.

Whether you’re seeking a playful sideboard that features colored glass and metal details, an antique Italian hand-carved storage cabinet or a glass-door vitrine to store and show off your collectibles, there are options for you on 1stDibs.

Questions About Bamboo With Doors
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
No, bamboo and rattan are not the same. Bamboo is inflexible so it cannot be curved to make different shapes. Alternatively, rattan is flexible and a type of climbing palm. It looks similar to bamboo but it’s more versatile and not as durable. Shop a collection of bamboo furniture from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.

    1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022

A contemporary door refers to a door that was designed in the present day. Although influenced by past movements like Art Deco and minimalism, contemporary design is the style of the present, and so is constantly changing. By definition, contemporary is fluid and can’t be tied to a particular period. On 1stDibs, you can find a variety of antique, new and vintage doors.

Paneled doors are constructed using several pieces of wood rather than one single slab. Paneled doors have been popular around the world for hundreds of years.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 23, 2024
To identify bamboo furniture, use a magnifying glass to examine the grain pattern on your piece. Bamboo has a distinct grain consisting of short, straight lines and small nodes running in the same direction across a surface. Whirled or irregular grain patterns typically indicate that a piece is wood, not bamboo. If you wish to learn who produced your furniture, search the item for a maker's mark and then use trusted online resources to identify the manufacturer. Should you need any help with the identification process, consider using the services of a certified appraiser or experienced dealer. On 1stDibs, find a collection of bamboo furniture.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Wicker is the finished woven product that can be made of either rattan or bamboo. Bamboo is an incredibly solid grass that is difficult to bend while rattan is a vine that’s much easier to manipulate. Shop a collection of wicker furniture from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, bamboo furniture is incredibly durable and as long as it’s cared for properly, it can last a long time. In fact, bamboo can be more resistant to damage than hardwoods, making it a popular choice for new or vintage furniture purchases. Shop a collection of Bamboo furniture from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.

The mid- to late 1980s and early 1990s were a particularly strong era for bamboo earrings, which is a name frequently given to big, bold hoop earrings (they're also called "door knockers"). While Black female recording artists such as Salt-N-Pepa, MC Lyte and Roxanne Shante popularized the trend during those years by donning hoops in music videos and on the red carpet, artist-activists Nina Simone and Angela Davis wore hoops decades earlier. In the Black and Latino communities, hoop earrings have long been associated with strength. Their symbolism as indicators of identity stretches back thousands of years, including to ancient Nubia. On view in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Ancient Near Eastern Art gallery is a pair of simple gold hoops from Mesopotamia dating to 2,600-2,500 B.C. that experts agree is among the oldest known examples. Shop a range of hoop earrings from some of the world's top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, you can grow bamboo in planters. However, there are specific qualifications that make some planters better than others for growing bamboo. Ideally a wooden planter that provides added insulation and drainage is used for optimal bamboo growth. Browse a range of planters on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, bamboo furniture can indeed be restored. Repair any mildly broken pieces with some heavy duty wood glue. The exterior can also be refinished by sanding off dirt and grime and repainting the piece. You’ll find a large collection of bamboo items from many of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Although construction methods also affect durability, bamboo chairs are generally strong due to the properties of bamboo. The tensile strength of bamboo per square inch is greater than that of many other materials, including steel. Shop a variety of bamboo chairs on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Like any piece of furniture, you can buy cabinet doors on their own. However, because they typically need to be fitted to your specific space, they will likely need to be customized. If you are designing a space from scratch, you can just buy cabinet doors as they are and design the rest of the space around the cabinets.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Iron doors were first used around the 10th century during the Middle Ages. Wrought iron doors fortified castles, towns and other high-invasion areas. As the designs and intricacies improved over time, heavily detailed doors became a status symbol for the upper-middle class and places of worship. Shop a selection of iron doors on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
There are a number of alternatives to the bifold doors commonly used for closets in homes. They include pocket doors, barn doors and French doors. You can also use a curtain or a screen to cover the doorway. Shop a variety of antique and vintage doors on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 19, 2021
A craftsman-style door has a trademark look due to the well-designed exterior and attention to detail in the craftsmanship. Craftsman-style homes were born out of the Arts and Crafts movement. The doors for these homes are crafted from hardwood and may be stained or painted to complement the colors of the home. Glass panes are located in the upper part of the door, with thick or elaborate trim or molding directly below. Glass panes are typically situated in one or two rows of three panes each.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 30, 2023
