Beds And Headboards For Sale on 1stDibs

An assortment of beds and headboards is available at 1stDibs. The range of distinct beds and headboards — often made from wood, walnut and metal — can elevate any home. There are 3489 antique and vintage beds and headboards for sale at 1stDibs, while we also have 525 modern editions to choose from as well. Beds and headboards have been made for many years, and versions that date back to the 18th Century alongside those produced as recently as the 21st Century. There are many kinds of beds and headboards to choose from, but at 1stDibs, mid-century modern, modern and Hollywood Regency beds and headboards are of considerable interest. Many beds and headboards are appealing in their simplicity, but Lane Furniture, Drexel and Paul McCobb produced popular beds and headboards that are worth a look.

Finding the Right Beds-frames for You

We find relaxation and solace in our bedrooms, which are often the most cherished rooms of a home. Your antique, new or vintage bed and bed frame are integral to this oasis of personal comfort.

Beds and bed frames have long been an important part of the sanctuary that is the bedroom. For the upper class in countries such as England, the massive, costly beds of the 16th and 17th centuries were decorative and of the poster variety. Some were characterized by large painted wooden headboards, often made of oak, that featured ornate carvings and richly colored curtains affixed to each of the two or four posts — think of today’s sumptuous upholstered headboards as a distant cousin to these luxurious furnishings. The heavy fabric curtains were drawn across a fringed canopy to close out the sunlight that might’ve warmed your grandiose and opulent bedchambers. This feature could also offer privacy as desired, because, as we all know, a bedroom is for more than just sleeping

Coiled springs didn’t make their way into mattresses until the 1800s, which likely made for a far more comfortable night’s sleep for many. Bed frames of cast iron and brass were introduced during the mid- to late-19th century. Later, the 20th century brought with it marvelous innovations for slumberland, among them daybeds from the likes of George Nelson and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich as well as convertible sofa beds.

Today, you will find a range of beds geared toward your individual personality and preferred style of decor. When shopping for a bed and bed frame, keep in mind that you’ve got options. Sizes range from twin to California king. At 76 inches wide and 80 inches long, a king-size bed is roughly 16 inches wider than a queen-size mattress, and your bed frame will likely add two to five inches to each side. (The California king bed is 84 inches long.)

From dramatic bedroom designs to uncomplicated, minimalist approaches, the bedroom has evolved into the haven that it should be: a peaceful place of respite, where we begin and end every day. Take the time to create your very own oasis — you deserve it. Rest easy with an expansive collection of antique, new and vintage beds and bed frames available on 1stDibs.

Questions About Beds And Headboards
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
While a headboard is a great way to decorate a bedroom they are not always a necessity. There are other ways to get creative, especially in a small space, in terms of decorating without a headboard to create a finished bedroom.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Yes, you can use a headboard with an adjustable bed. When purchasing a headboard for an adjustable bed, make sure that the packaging reads “compatible with an adjustable bed”.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
While queen sized beds are 6 inches wider than full sized beds, you can often use a queen size headboard for a full mattress. Headboards are usually even with or a few inches wider than the bed.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
The point of a headboard is to provide support and protect your wall against abrasion. In addition to these practical functions, a headboard also adds a personal touch to any room.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Headboards serve an important purpose: They protect your wall against abrasion and support the rest of the bed. Also, headboards give your bed a unique look and, depending on which one you get, can be comfortable to lean on.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023
A floating headboard is a headboard that is mounted on a wall rather than secured to a bed frame. Some people refer to this type of headboard as a hanging headboard due to its placement. On 1stDibs, find a selection of headboards from some of the world's top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Because it is not necessary to purchase a headboard with an accompanying bed frame, purchasing the headboard alone is a great way to save money.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023
Whether a headboard should be wider than a mattress is largely a matter of personal preference. Generally, a headboard should be as wide as a mattress or 2 to 4 inches wider to create a balanced look. Find a collection of headboards from some of the world's top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 3, 2023
Whether a headboard has a universal fit depends on the specific circumstances. If your bed frame is a standard size, then all headboards of that size should fit properly. However, headboards won't necessarily fit all custom-sized bed frames. Shop a collection of headboards on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Whether or not cane headboards are sturdy depends on how they are made. Finely crafted headboards are generally durable. However, antique and vintage examples that have become warped or damaged over time may not be sturdy even if initially well-made. Shop a selection of cane headboards on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021
The best fabric for a tufted headboard depends mainly on one's preference and how the rest of the bedroom is decorated. However, velvet and leather are commonly used for upholstered headboards. Shop a collection of antique, vintage, and contemporary upholstered beds from some of the world’s top dealers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 12, 2021
The best wood to make a headboard is pine wood. It fits perfectly with all room decor and is sturdy, easy to work with. Find a collection of antique and vintage headboards on 1stDibs today.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
To hang a bed, you will need to install hooks in the ceiling joists and then attach chains or ropes to the hooks and the bed frame. Enlisting the help of an experienced handyman can help to ensure that you install the hooks properly to avoid personal injury or damage to the ceiling or the bed. On 1stDibs, find a range of vintage and antique beds.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
A bed blanket is a generic term that refers to a bed covering that is thicker than a sheet. A bed blanket can be a quilit, duvet or even a comforter.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
More commonly known as a nightstand, a bed stand is a small table that goes on either one or both sides of a bed. People typically use them to hold small items they may need during the night and in the morning, such as a table lamp or clock.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
A Bali bed is a bed designed for outdoors. It's usually a canopy bed and consists of a mattress elevated on a platform.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 26, 2021
Bed throws are usually smaller than a standard blanket and can be draped over couches, chairs and the end of beds. They provide warmth and comfort while you’re relaxing in a chair or couch and are made from a variety of materials. On 1stDibs, you will find a variety of throw blankets.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023
A scroll bed is a bed that has a tall headboard with a scrolled or rolled top and a matching shorter footboard. Often, scroll beds feature allover upholstery with diamond quilting and button tufting. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of beds from some of the world's top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 15, 2023
A float bed is a bed positioned on a platform that rests on hidden legs, creating the illusion that the piece is floating in the air. You may also see this type of bed referred to as a floating bed. On 1stDibs, shop a range of beds from some of the world’s top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 28, 2021
