Why Gold Shines in Jewelry Craftsmanship

Gold is the feel-good metal, the serotonin of jewelry. Wear vintage and antique gold necklaces, watches, gold bracelets or gold rings and you feel happy, you feel dressed, you feel, well, yourself.

Gold, especially yellow gold, with its rich patina and ancient pedigree going back thousands of years, is the steady standby, the well-mannered metal of choice. Any discussion of this lustrous metal comes down to a basic truth: Gold is elementary, my dear. Gold jewelry that couples the mystique of the metal with superb design and craftsmanship achieves the status of an enduring classic. Many luxury houses have given us some of our most treasured and lasting examples of gold jewelry over the years.

Since its founding, in 1837, Tiffany Co. has built its reputation on its company jewelry as well as its coterie of boutique designers, which has included Jean Schlumberger, Donald Claflin, Angela Cummings and Elsa Peretti. There are numerous gold Tiffany classics worth citing. Some are accented with gemstones, but all stand out for their design and the workmanship displayed.

For the woman who prefers a minimalist look, the Tiffany Co. twist bangle (thin, slightly ovoid) is stylishly simple. For Cummings devotees, signature pieces feature hard stone inlay, such as her pairs of gold ear clips inlaid with black jade (a play on the classic Chanel black and tan), or bangles whose design recalls ocean waves, with undulating lines of lapis lazuli and mother-of-pearl. And just about any design by the great Jean Schlumberger is by definition a classic.

Even had he eschewed stones and diamonds, Southern-born David Webb would be hailed for the vast arsenal of heavy gold jewelry he designed. Gold, usually hammered or textured in some manner, defines great David Webb jewelry. The self-taught jeweler made very au courant pieces while drawing inspiration from ancient and out-of-the-way sources — East meets West in the commanding gold necklaces made by Webb in the early 1970s. The same could be said for his endlessly varied gold cuffs.

In Europe, many houses have given us gold jewelry that sets the highest standard for excellence, pieces that were highly sought after when they were made and continue to be so.

Numerous designs from Cartier are homages to gold. There are the classic Trinity rings, necklaces and bracelets — trifectas of yellow, white and rose gold. As a testament to the power of love, consider the endurance of the Cartier Love bracelet.

Aldo Cipullo, Cartier’s top in-house designer from the late 1960s into the early ’70s, made history in 1969 with the Love bracelet. Cipullo frequently said that the Love bracelet was born of a sleepless night contemplating a love affair gone wrong and his realization that “the only remnants he possessed of the romance were memories.” He distilled the urge to keep a loved one close into a slim 18-karat gold bangle.

BVLGARI and its coin jewelry, gemme nummarie, hit the jackpot when the line launched in the 1960s. The line has been perennially popular. BVLGARI coin jewelry features ancient Greek and Roman coins embedded in striking gold mounts, usually hung on thick link necklaces of varying lengths. In the 1970s, BVLGARI introduced the Tubogas line, most often made in yellow gold. The Tubogas watches are classics, and then there is the Serpenti, the house's outstanding snake-themed watches and bracelets.

A collection called Monete that incorporated the gold coins is one of several iconic BVLGARI lines that debuted in the 1970s and ’80s, catering to a new generation of empowered women. Just as designers like Halston and Yves Saint Laurent were popularizing fuss-free ready-to-wear fashion for women on the go, BVLGARI offered jewels to be lived in

Since Van Cleef Arpels opened its Place Vendôme doors in 1906, collection after collection of jewelry classics have enchanted the public. As predominantly expressed in a honeycomb of gold, there is the Ludo watch and accessories, circa the 1920s, and the golden Zip necklace, 1951, whose ingenious transformation of the traditional zipper was originally proposed by the Duchess of Windsor. Van Cleef's Alhambra, with its Moroccan motif, was introduced in 1968 and from the start its popularity pivoted on royalty and celebrity status. It remains one of VCA’s most popular and collected styles.

Mention must be made of Buccellati, whose name is synonymous with gold so finely spun that it suggests tapestry. The house’s many gold bracelets, typically embellished with a few or many diamonds, signified taste and distinction and are always in favor on the secondary market. Other important mid-20th-century houses known for their gold-themed jewelry include Hermès and Ilias Lalaounis.

The Legacy of Diamond in Jewelry Design

Antique diamond rings, diamond tiaras and dazzling vintage diamond earrings are on the wish lists of every lover of fine jewelry. And diamonds and diamond jewelry are primarily associated with storybook engagements and red-carpet grand entrances — indeed, this ultra-cherished gemstone has a dramatic history on its hands.

From “A Diamond Is Forever” to “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” pop culture has ingrained in our minds that diamonds are the most desired, the most lasting and the most valuable gemstone. But what makes the diamond so special? Each stone — whether it’s rubies, sapphires or another stone — is unique and important in its own right. April babies might claim diamonds for themselves, but just about everyone wants this kind of sparkle in their lives!

There are several factors that set diamonds apart from other stones, and these points are important to our gem education.

Diamonds are minerals. They are made up of almost entirely of carbon (carbon comprises 99.95 percent; the remainder consists of various trace elements). Diamonds are the hardest gemstones, ranking number 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Even its name, diamond, is rooted in the Greek adamas, or unconquerable. The only object that can scratch a diamond is another diamond. Diamonds are formed deep within the earth at very high temperatures (1,652–2,372 degrees Fahrenheit at depths between 90 and 120 miles beneath the earth’s surface) and are carried up by volcanic activity. Diamonds are quite rare, according to the Gemological Institute of America, and only 30 percent of all the diamonds mined in the world are gem quality.

In the 1950s, the Gemological Institute of America developed the 4Cs grading system to classify diamonds: clarity, color, cut and carat weight. Not all diamonds are created equal (there are diamonds, and then there are diamonds). The value of the diamond depends on the clarity (flawless diamonds are very rare but a diamond's value decreases if there are many blemishes or inclusions), color (the less color the higher the grade), cut (how the diamond’s facets catch the light, certain cuts of diamonds show off the stone better than others) and carat weight (the bigger, the better).

When you start shopping for a diamond engagement ring, always prioritize the cut, which plays the largest role in the diamond's beauty (taking the time to clean your diamond ring at least every six months or so plays a role in maintaining said beauty). And on 1stDibs, a range of buying guides can be found for those in the market for antique engagement ringsvintage engagement rings or Art Deco engagement rings

Shop antique and vintage diamond rings, diamond necklaces and other extraordinary diamond jewelry on 1stDibs.

Finding the Right Drop Necklaces for You

Also called Y necklaces as they are designed to hang a certain way, vintage drop necklaces are striking and adaptable. They can enhance everything from a casual sweater-and-jeans combo to an elegant heels-and-evening-dress pairing.

Adornment is an ancient human practice, with archeologists identifying early jewelry made from bones, claws and shells. As technology has advanced, so too have jewelry designs and the design of necklaces, from the simple to the intricate.

Drop necklaces come from lariat-style necklaces, which are chain necklaces that end in a tassel or pendant. A drop necklace’s design, meanwhile, is long with open ends, and it usually does not have a clasp. It consists of a single chain that wraps around the neck and a centerpiece — sometimes featuring a diamond or pearls — that hangs down to the middle of the chest. Drop necklaces frequently come in lengths from 16 to 20 inches, with the vertical lines making them appear longer than other necklaces of the same length.

Drop necklaces are extremely versatile, able to be worn knotted, draped or looped. They can be chunky statement pieces or thin, minimal designs. The range of drop necklaces that can be found on 1stDibs can accentuate the plunging necklines of modern looks or add flair to a basic ensemble.

Questions About Blue Diamond Necklaces
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 17, 2021
Yes, a blue diamond is a real diamond. Contrary to popular belief, diamonds come in an array of colors aside from clear. Blue diamonds are neither color-treated nor enhanced to deliver the icy shade, which can range from a seafoam green to a royal blue.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, there are blue-green diamonds. However, natural ones are very rare, so most are man-made. The Dresden Green is the most famous example of a genuine blue-green diamond gemstone. You can find a wide selection of diamond gemstone jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
A light blue 0.5 carat diamond is worth roughly $26,280 on average. A deep blue 0.25 diamond, costs $75,000 on average. Blue diamonds are the rarest color of diamond, only found in three areas of the world: Australia, South Africa, and India. The deeper the blue diamonds are even more rare and therefore more expensive.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
The cost of a diamond necklace can range quite a bit depending on material, craftsmanship, quality, and condition. On 1stDibs.com, you can shop a variety of diamond necklaces at a range of prices. Browse contemporary and antique necklaces starting at $125.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 26, 2024
Yes, Blue Nile diamonds are real diamonds. The luxury jewelry maker uses natural diamonds ethically sourced from mines for many of its pieces. In addition, Blue Nile offers an assortment of lab-created diamond rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets. Lab-created diamonds are still real, but they are human-made rather than mined. On 1stDibs, find an assortment of Blue Nile diamond jewelry.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023
What a blue heart necklace means is up for interpretation. Today, some people might wear a blue heart necklace as a symbol of the anti-human trafficking movement. Historically, blue hearts were associated with confidence, trust and stability. On 1stDibs, find a wide range of necklaces.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 16, 2024
Yes, blue diamonds may be worth something. How much a particular gemstone is worth depends on its color, cut, clarity and size, measured in carats. Generally, naturally occurring blue diamonds are worth more than human-made synthetic ones. A certified appraiser or knowledgeable jeweler can inspect your loose gemstone or diamond jewelry and provide you with its estimated value. Explore a diverse assortment of blue diamond jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 22, 2024
Yes, Blue Nile diamonds are legit. The jewelry maker offers both natural diamonds sourced from mines and lab-created diamonds produced via controlled scientific techniques. Both types of diamonds are legitimate or genuine gemstones. Find a range of Blue Nile diamond jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 29, 2024
To tell if your blue diamond is real, look for a maker's mark on your piece. By researching the manufacturer using trusted online resources, you can find out if the jewelry maker tends to use authentic gemstones or rhinestones in its pieces. If you can't find a mark or are still uncertain, consult a certified appraiser or knowledgeable jeweler. Performing home tests for diamond authenticity can damage your jewelry, so getting a professional opinion is often the best way to protect your piece. Find a range of blue diamond jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 6, 2023
There is no hard-and-fast rule for how many carats a diamond necklace should be. On average, solitaire diamond necklaces range from 0.5 to 1 carat, but you can find pieces with larger and smaller stones. Tennis chains that feature continuous diamonds set into links usually have much higher total carat weights. For example, one might feature 60 individual diamonds, each 0.20 carats in size, for a total carat weight of 12.0 carats. Shop a wide range of diamond necklaces on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 5, 2023
Whether a diamond necklace is a good gift is largely a matter of preference. However, diamonds offer timeless appeal, and with respect to styles, all kinds of diamond necklaces have been made over the years, which means you’ll have a lot of options when it comes to shopping for a gift. From “A Diamond Is Forever” to “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend,” pop culture has ingrained in our minds that diamonds are the most desired, the most lasting and the most valuable gemstone. They are the hardest gemstones, and diamonds are quite rare, according to the Gemological Institute of America, and only 30 percent of all the diamonds mined in the world are gem quality. Shop a selection of diamond necklaces on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 21, 2023
Diamond tennis necklaces remain popular even as trends change from season to season. This style of accessory is luxurious, nostalgic, wearable everyday and delights the eye with its sparkle. Plus, the tennis chain is versatile. It can coordinate with both casual and dressy attire and be worn alone or layered. Explore a variety of diamond tennis necklaces on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
What a diamond heart necklace means is largely a matter of personal interpretation. Most people associate the heart shape with love. As a result, giving a person a heart necklace is often a way of expressing that you love them. On 1stDibs, shop a selection of diamond heart necklaces.

Tiffany diamond necklaces are dazzling and covetable pieces of jewelry. Tiffany Co. is one of the most prominent purveyors of luxury goods in the United States, and has long been an important arbiter of style in the design of necklaces as well as diamond engagement rings. When a jewelry enthusiast mentions “the Tiffany Diamond,” this refers to the 128.54 yellow-carat Tiffany Diamond, which was found in the Kimberley diamond mines in South Africa in 1877. This jewel was worn by pop music icon Beyoncé in a 2021 ad campaign. The estimated value of the Tiffany Diamond in 2019 was $30 million. Shop a range of antique and vintage Tiffany diamond necklaces on 1stDibs today.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 5, 2021
A blue diamond ring worth depends on the type of blue diamond. Ideally, a blue diamond’s cost is based on its 4Cs (cut, color, clarity, and carat), with the intensity of the color being the dominant factor. A blue diamond ring price ranges between $6,800 to $11,200. On 1stDibs, you can find a range of exquisite antique and vintage blue diamond rings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 30, 2024
Yes, Blue Nile sells real diamonds. Many of the jewelry maker's pieces feature natural diamonds. Others are set with lab-created diamonds, which are real but are the result of processes performed in laboratories. On 1stDibs, explore a collection of Blue Nile diamond jewelry from some of the world's top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 5, 2021
The price of a natural blue diamond is determined first by the color and then its clarity. Depending on these factors and the size chosen, there is a huge variation in price. You will find the blue diamond price range from under $2,000 to over $10,000 on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertDecember 4, 2023
There is no single best setting for a diamond tennis necklace. You can find tennis chains with both prong and bezel settings, and both types can keep diamonds secure when they are well crafted. The biggest difference is that full bezel settings encircle the gemstones, while prongs hug the stones with three or four metal elements, leaving most of their edges visible. Feel free to choose the type of setting that appeals most to you. On 1stDibs, explore a wide range of diamond tennis necklaces.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023
Yes, you can generally wear a diamond tennis necklace every day. Due to the small size of the stones, tennis necklaces can complement casual attire as easily as they can dressier ensembles. However, you should remove your necklace before you shower and when you're exercising, playing sports and doing other activities that could damage your jewelry. Find a collection of diamond tennis necklaces on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertDecember 4, 2023
Yes, men can wear a diamond tennis necklace. Since there are no hard-and-fast rules when it comes to men's jewelry, you're free to sport anything that you find appealing. Pete Davidson, Drake and Timothée Chalamet are just some of the famous men who have been spotted wearing tennis chains. On 1stDibs, shop a wide range of diamond tennis necklaces.
