Finding the Right Seating for You

With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.

Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.

Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.

The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.

Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.

With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.

Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.

No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.

Questions About Boucle And Walnut
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Bouclé fabric is a woven wool that joins multiple shades of a color to produce a texture. It is known for being a heavy textile created using looped yarn.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A bouclé sofa is a sofa that’s made from the heavy textile known as boucle. Bouclé is known for its fuzziness and soft texture, and designers often use it on rounded and asymmetrical furniture. Shop a collection of boucle sofas and other furniture from some of the world’s top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023
A bouclé accent chair is a chair that features a specific type of upholstery called bouclé. It is a combination of looped and woven wool that has a soft, cozy feel. The word "bouclé" means curl in French and refers to the looping wool fibers that make up the upholstery. On 1stDibs, find a selection of bouclé accent chairs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2024
Walnut wood is used for a variety of purposes. Due to its hardness and beauty, it is a common material for furniture and cabinetry. Artisans may also choose it when producing wooden handicrafts and decorative objects, such as bowls, planters and carved figurines. Many musical instruments feature walnut-wood construction as well. Shop a variety of walnut furniture on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 12, 2021
With respect to the actual wood, the outer layer of American walnut — the sapwood — has a creamy yellow-white color whereas the inner layer — the heartwood — ranges from a golden brown to dark chocolate brown color. In more descriptive words, the color of American walnut embodies the richness of chocolate mixed with slight undertones of red wine. On 1stDibs, find a variety of antique and vintage American walnut furniture.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Walnut wood is more expensive than other wood including oak, ash, maple, and cherry due to natural limitations. This renders walnut far rarer than these other woods.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
You can use black walnut for just about anything, but its most common uses are for furniture, gunstocks, flooring and coffins. It's considered a sturdy, durable and heavy wood.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 12, 2024
No, walnut is not harder than oak. On the Janka hardwood hardness scale, walnut's rating is 1010. By comparison, red oak's rating is 1290, and white oak's rating is 1335. The Janka scale tests the amount of force required to embed a steel ball of a certain size into a hardwood species, and the higher the number, the denser and harder the wood. On this scale, oak ranks significantly higher than walnut. Explore a wide range of wood furniture on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
To care for a walnut veneer table, dust it with a soft, dry cloth regularly, moving in the direction of the grain. Sop up spills promptly to reduce the risk of staining. When deeper cleaning is necessary, use a soft cloth and a cleaning product formulated for wood. You'll find a wide variety of walnut veneer tables on 1stDibs.
