Brazilian Wood Benches For Sale on 1stDibs

At 1stDibs, there are several options of brazilian wood benches available for sale. We have 118 antique and vintage brazilian wood benches in-stock, while there are 43 modern editions to choose from as well. Brazilian wood benches have been produced for many years, with earlier versions available from the 18th Century and newer variations made as recently as the 21st Century. Brazilian wood benches bearing Mid-Century Modern or Modern hallmarks are very popular at 1stDibs. Large brazilian wood benches can prove too imposing for some spaces, so the smaller brazilian wood benches available at 1stDibs — each spanning 11 inches in width — may make for a better choice. Many brazilian wood benches are appealing in their simplicity, but Sergio Rodrigues, Jorge Zalszupin and Maria Fernanda Paes de Barros produced popular brazilian wood benches that are worth a look.

How Much are Brazilian Wood Benches?

Prices for brazilian wood benches start at $745 and top out at $65,003 with the average selling for $5,250.

On the Origins of Brazilian

More often than not, vintage mid-century Brazilian furniture designs, with their gleaming wood, soft leathers and inviting shapes, share a sensuous, unique quality that distinguishes them from the more rectilinear output of American and Scandinavian makers of the same era.

Commencing in the 1940s and '50s, a group of architects and designers transformed the local cultural landscape in Brazil, merging the modernist vernacular popular in Europe and the United States with the South American country's traditional techniques and indigenous materials.

Key mid-century influencers on Brazilian furniture design include natives Oscar NiemeyerSergio Rodrigues and José Zanine Caldas as well as such European immigrants as Joaquim TenreiroJean Gillon and Jorge Zalszupin. These creators frequently collaborated; for instance, Niemeyer, an internationally acclaimed architect, commissioned many of them to furnish his residential and institutional buildings.

The popularity of Brazilian modern furniture has made household names of these designers and other greats. Their particular brand of modernism is characterized by an émigré point of view (some were Lithuanian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and Italian), a preference for highly figured indigenous Brazilian woods, a reverence for nature as an inspiration and an atelier or small-production mentality.

Hallmarks of Brazilian mid-century design include smooth, sculptural forms and the use of native woods like rosewoodjacaranda and pequi. The work of designers today exhibits many of the same qualities, though with a marked interest in exploring new materials (witness the Campana Brothers' stuffed-animal chairs) and an emphasis on looking inward rather than to other countries for inspiration.

Find a collection of vintage Brazilian furniture on 1stDibs that includes chairssofastables and more.

Finding the Right Benches for You

Don’t underestimate a good bench — antique and vintage benches are storage pieces, stylish accents and statement-making additional seating.

Today, benches are a great option to maximize seating in your house and outdoor space. The perfect option to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere in foyers and entryways, benches can also transform dining areas, making it possible to host a hungry family with limited space. Whether you’re sprucing up your entertaining with upholstered Empire-style benches or adding more options to a dining room that’s seen a farmhouse makeover, this humble furnishing has only become more versatile over the years. Designers have recognized the demand for a good bench, crafting the convenient seating alternative from a range of materials, including wood, iron and even concrete.

Mid-century modern benches from George Nakashima, Charlotte Perriand and the pared-down Platform bench by George Nelson for Herman Miller are classics of innovation, but maybe you’re looking for an unconventional design approach to your home's seating. Opt for something totally outside the box — an antique pine church-pew bench paired with a vintage wool throw and stationed under the mounted coatrack in your mudroom is a distinctive touch.

For your outdoor oasis, a wrought-iron patio bench is the obvious choice but not the only option. An enclosed back patio would do well to inherit a rattan bench with cushions, but it can be susceptible to weathering and should be covered or moved indoors when not in use.

Whatever your seating arrangement needs are, find vintage, new and antique benches for every space on 1stDibs.

Questions About Brazilian Wood Benches
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 19, 2021
Many types of wood can be used for an outside bench — it is really a matter of preference. Generally, hardwood is considered the best option since these varieties are durable, rot-resistant and have the best chance at a long life outdoors.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 26, 2021
The best wood for a garden bench is one that is durable and naturally weather-resistant. The need for outdoor chairs, tables and benches to withstand varying weather conditions means that many contemporary offerings prioritize durability over form. For a touch of glamour in your garden, antique and vintage pieces from France or Italy, which have already proven they can stand the test of time, can introduce an elegant sensibility to your outdoor space. On 1stDibs, find a variety of antique and vintage garden benches.
