Finding the Right Credenzas for You

Antique and vintage credenzas can add an understated touch of grace to your home. These long and sophisticated cabinet-style pieces of furniture can serve a variety of purposes, and they look great too.

In Italy, the credenza was originally a small side table used in religious services. Appropriately, credere in Italian means “to believe.” Credenzas were a place to not only set the food ready for meals, they were also a place to test and taste prepared food for poison before a dish was served to a member of the ruling class. Later, credenza was used to describe a type of versatile narrow side table, typically used for serving food in the home. In form, a credenza has much in common with a sideboard — in fact, the terms credenza and sideboard are used almost interchangeably today.

Credenzas usually have short legs or no legs at all, and can feature drawers and cabinets. And all kinds of iterations of the credenza have seen the light of day over the years, from ornately carved walnut credenzas originating in 16th-century Tuscany to the wealth of Art Deco credenzas — with their polished surfaces and geometric patterns — to the array of innovative modernist interpretations that American furniture maker Milo Baughman created for Directional and Thayer Coggin.

The credenza’s blend of style and functionality led to its widespread use in the 20th century. Mid-century modern credenzas are particularly popular — take a look at Danish furniture designer Arne Vodder’s classic Model 29, for instance, with its reversible sliding doors and elegant drawer pulls. Hans Wegner, another Danish modernist, produced strikingly minimalist credenzas in the 1950s and ’60s, as did influential American designer Florence Knoll. Designers continue to explore new and exciting ways to update this long-loved furnishing.

Owing to its versatility and familiar low-profile form, the credenza remains popular in contemporary homes. Unlike many larger case pieces, credenzas can be placed under windows and in irregularly shaped rooms, such as foyers and entryways. This renders it a useful storage solution. In living rooms, for example, a credenza can be a sleek media console topped with plants and the rare art monographs you’ve been planning to show off. In homes with open floor plans, a credenza can help define multiple living spaces, making it ideal for loft apartments.

Browse a variety of antique and vintage credenzas for sale on 1stDibs to find the perfect fit for your home today.

Questions About Credenzas With Brass
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
A credenza is a cabinet-style piece of furniture typically found in the dining room. It is often used for serving food, for displaying serving dishes, and for dining ware storage. It is typically defined by its short legs and sliding doors.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021
A TV credenza, also known as a TV cabinet, is a classic piece of furniture that can be used as a stand to support your television. Similar in form to credenzas — a popular kind of case piece — a TV credenza will likely feature shelves and cabinets or drawers for storage purposes. Shop a collection of antique, vintage, and contemporary TV cabinets from some of the world’s top dealers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 22, 2019

The purpose of a credenza is dependent on the room in which it is placed: Most credenzas are in a dining room and serve the same function as a buffet, but credenzas in a living room or bedroom are decorative and can be used as storage or a surface for displaying small objects. Credenzas tend to be long, low cabinets on slender legs, often with sliding doors for concealing small appliances, clothes, dishes…etc.

  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 22, 2024
Why it is called a credenza relates to historic lore about the furniture. In Italian, credenza is a word for “trust” or “belief.” During the 16th century, food and drink was often tested by a servant for a prominent person to see if it contained poison. The sideboard where this tasting took place came to be called a credenza. From there, a cabinet used to hold drinkware, plates and other items became known by the term as well. Although credenzas are now general storage furniture used in homes and offices, the original name remains. On 1stDibs, explore a variety of credenzas.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 25, 2019

Credenzas are small, typically fancy, legless buffets.

  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 20, 2024
The difference between a credenza and a console is design. A credenza is an elongated low cabinet usually containing shelves concealed by cabinet doors. Some also have open shelving and drawers. On the other hand, a console is a tall, long and narrow table. Consoles may provide storage space in the form of open shelves or drawers, but some are simple tables with no storage features beyond their tops. Shop a selection of console tables and credenzas on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 22, 2019

The difference between a hutch and a credenza is their appearance: A hutch is usually a tall freestanding unit that contains cabinets or a display case that sits on top of the set of drawers underneath, and a credenza is a short and long table with low cabinets on slender legs, often with sliding doors for concealing the items inside the unit.

  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 22, 2019

The difference between a desk and a credenza is that a desk is a piece of furniture with a table-style work surface and tall legs used for academic, professional or domestic activities, and credenza is a short and long table with low cabinets on slender legs, often with sliding doors for concealing the items inside the unit.

  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 7, 2024
The difference between a console and a credenza is that one is a table, while the other is a cabinet. Console tables are narrow, tall tables often placed in entryways, hallways and living rooms against a wall or behind a sofa. They may feature drawers or open shelving for storing items. On the other hand, a credenza is a long, low cabinet used to store supplies in offices, entertainment center components in living rooms and other items elsewhere in a home. Most credenzas feature cabinets concealed behind doors. Find a wide range of consoles and credenzas on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 12, 2021
A brass scale is the one used in ancient times when bartering or trading various precious metal currencies. They are now frequently used as decorative objects for display in any home. This regal-looking collectible adds a touch of royalty to any mantel or console table. Find a variety of antique and vintage brass scales on 1stDibs.

A sextant is a nautical tool made from brass, used by sailors to measure the angle of the stars above the horizon to help calculate their ship’s global position. A sextant includes an index mirror, sun filters, a horizon mirror, an adjustable arc and a 2x magnifying scope. You’ll find a variety of sextants from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 26, 2021
A brass sextant is a generally popular collectible for display on bookcases or mantels at home, and those created in Victorian, Industrial, and mid-century modern styles are sought with frequency. It is a traditional nautical instrument that was first used by sailors over 200 years ago to calculate global position by measuring the position of stars above the horizon. They are often made from brass, metal and wood. Shop a collection of antique, vintage, and contemporary brass sextants from some of the world’s top dealers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A brass footman is a stand that would be used to hold dishes in front of a fire, allowing them to stay warm before a meal was served on them. This antique piece of furniture was commonly made of brass, but some were crafted from other metals, such as steel. On 1stDibs, find a collection of authentic vintage brass footman pieces.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A brass jardinière is a planter crafted from brass. It is typically cylindrical in shape, and may feature side handles to make it easier to move, or feet to give it elevated style. It may also feature intricate designs. On 1stDibs, find an array of brass jardinières.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, a brass bed will tarnish unless it is properly cared for and lacquered. To prevent tarnishing, you can use linseed oil with a soft terry towel. On 1stDibs, you can find antique brass beds from top sellers around the world.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
To shine brass candlesticks, first determine whether they’re lacquered or brass-plated. If so, shine them with a soft cloth. If not, use a high quality brass polish according to directions — wash the brass in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap. You'll find a variety of solid brass candlesticks from some of the world's top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 17, 2021
Brass andirons are not only beautiful to look at, but they keep logs from rolling out of the fireplace. They serve as a gate to keep the logs in place.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, antique brass is strong because it is made with zinc and copper. Brass is considered a strong and durable metal crafted to be long-lasting and withstand rust and corrosion. Shop a selection of antique and vintage brass items on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
The value of brass varies in price depending on the type. Red brass is usually more valuable than yellow brass, with red brass usually selling for approximately $1.75 / pound and yellow brass selling for around $1.55 / pound.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
You can tell if brass is treated to appear antique by looking at the patina. Because real aged brass is often made of copper, the older it gets the more likely it is to have a greenish or bluish patina that you’d expect from copper. Modern brass that’s designed to look antique will have a brownish hue, not a blue-green one. Shop a collection of antique brass from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
