Joan Miró for sale on 1stDibs

With his wide-ranging oeuvre, comprising strikingly original paintings, prints, ceramics, sculptures, metal engravings and murals, Catalan modernist Joan Miró was a critical force in moving 20th-century art toward complete abstraction. Although often considered an early Surrealist because of his nonobjective imagery and evocation of the subconscious, he defies neat categorization.

Miró’s identity is largely rooted in the city of his birth: Barcelona. To this day, a number of his public artworks can be found there, including the 72-foot-tall statue Dona i Ocell (Woman and Bird), 1983. Female and avian forms, along with bright colors and the theme of Catalan pride, are recurring elements in his work.

The radical visual world Miró created with his expressive lines, signature symbols and biomorphic shapes influenced such American Abstract Expressionists as Jackson Pollock and Color Field painters like Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman.

Mirò continued to work and experiment until his death at the age of 90 in 1983. Five years before that, he was quoted saying, “I painted these paintings in a frenzy, with real violence so that people will know that I am alive, that I’m breathing, that I still have a few more places to go. I’m heading in new directions.”

Finding the Right Prints-works-on-paper for You

Decorating with fine art prints — whether they’re figurative prints, abstract prints or another variety — has always been a practical way of bringing a space to life as well as bringing works by an artist you love into your home.

Pursued in the 1960s and ’70s, largely by Pop artists drawn to its associations with mass production, advertising, packaging and seriality, as well as those challenging the primacy of the Abstract Expressionist brushstroke, printmaking was embraced in the 1980s by painters and conceptual artists ranging from David Salle and Elizabeth Murray to Adrian Piper and Sherrie Levine.

Printmaking is the transfer of an image from one surface to another. An artist takes a material like stone, metal, wood or wax, carves, incises, draws or otherwise marks it with an image, inks or paints it and then transfers the image to a piece of paper or other material.

Fine art prints are frequently confused with their more commercial counterparts. After all, our closest connection to the printed image is through mass-produced newspapers, magazines and books, and many people don’t realize that even though prints are editions, they start with an original image created by an artist with the intent of reproducing it in a small batch. Fine art prints are created in strictly limited editions — 20 or 30 or maybe 50 — and are always based on an image created specifically to be made into an edition.

Many people think of revered Dutch artist Rembrandt as a painter but may not know that he was a printmaker as well. His prints have been preserved in time along with the work of other celebrated printmakers such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Andy Warhol. These fine art prints are still highly sought after by collectors.

“It’s another tool in the artist’s toolbox, just like painting or sculpture or anything else that an artist uses in the service of mark making or expressing him- or herself,” says International Fine Print Dealers Association (IFPDA) vice president Betsy Senior, of New York’s Betsy Senior Fine Art, Inc.

Because artist’s editions tend to be more affordable and available than his or her unique works, they’re more accessible and can be a great opportunity to bring a variety of colors, textures and shapes into a space.

For tight corners, select small fine art prints as opposed to the oversized bold piece you’ll hang as a focal point in the dining area. But be careful not to choose something that is too big for your space. And feel free to lean into it if need be — not every work needs picture-hanging hooks. Leaning a larger fine art print against the wall behind a bookcase can add a stylish installation-type dynamic to your living room. (Read more about how to arrange wall art here.)

Questions About Joan Miró
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 31, 2023
One interesting fact about Joan Miró is that he was greatly influenced by his birthplace, Barcelona, Spain, and the city, in turn, has been influenced by him. To this day, a number of his public artworks can be found there, including the 72-foot-tall statue Dona i Ocell (Woman and Bird), which he made in 1983. Shop a selection of Joan Miró from some of the world's top galleries on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 5, 2023
To authenticate a Joan Miró piece, look for the artist's signature. Joan Miró hand-signed many of his works in a heavy script. Typically, he added only his last name and placed a period after the ó. Keep in mind that there are many reproductions of his works in circulation. As a result, the best way to authenticate the artist's work is to take your piece to a certified appraiser who can conduct research and thoroughly inspect the work to determine whether it is a genuine Miró. Shop a variety of Joan Miró from some of the world’s top galleries on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 15, 2023
What piece is Joan Miró’s most famous is a matter of debate. The Catalan modernist was a critical force in moving 20th-century art toward complete abstraction. Although often considered an early Surrealist because of his nonobjective imagery and evocation of the subconscious, he defies neat categorization. Some of his most well-known works include The Farm, The Harlequin’s Carnival, The Hunter, Painting (Blue Star), Bleu II, The Escape Ladder, Still Life with Old Shoe, May 68, The Tilled Field and Portrait of Vincent Nubiola. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of Joan Miró art from some of the world’s top galleries.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 30, 2023
Whether plate-signed prints are worth anything depends on the artist, the rarity of the piece, its condition and other factors. While artists’ editions tend to be more affordable and available than his or her unique works, and so new collectors are often directed toward prints as a starting point, accessibility, however, does not mean prints appreciate at a different pace from other mediums. The market for paintings increases parallel to the prints market (and a signed work may be more valuable to collectors than an unsigned print). A certified appraiser or art industry professional can evaluate specific prints and determine their value. On 1stDibs, shop a range of prints from some of the world’s top galleries.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 3, 2023
Joan Miró used a variety of symbols in his paintings, prints, ceramics, sculptures, metal engravings and murals. Some of the motifs that the Catalan modernist most frequently repeated include hair, eyes, feet, stars and planets. Female and avian forms, along with bright colors and the theme of Catalan pride, are also recurring elements in his work. Shop a range of Joan Miró from some of the world's top galleries on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Joan Miró is known as one of the pioneers of Surrealism, but at times his work steered towards Fauvism and Expressionism as well. The visual world Miró created with his expressive lines, signature symbols and biomorphic shapes was truly radical and it influenced artists such as Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Shop a wide range of Joan Miró art from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
