  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 26, 2021
A live-edge table is a table that sees the actual gnarled shape of the edge of a tree on at least one side of the structure. This kind of table preserves the forest's natural beauty — impurities in the wood are retained, and the tree's edges are left undisturbed for at least part of the table. Max Ernst lived in several places during his life. He was born in Brühl, Germany, in 1881 and later moved to Bonn to attend the university located there. Then he settled in Cologne, not far from his birthplace. In 1922, Ernst moved to France, where he soon became affiliated with Surrealism, the avant-garde art movement taking shape in Paris. Alongside Man Ray, Joan Miró and others, Ernst was among the first visual artists to experiment with imagery and techniques associated with Surrealism. When Germany occupied France during World War II, Ernst escaped to America with the help of patron and collector Peggy Guggenheim, whom he married in 1941. While living in New York, Ernst's work and techniques proved instrumental in inspiring the early development of Abstract Expressionism. He later moved to Sedona, Arizona, where he lived with his fourth wife, Dorothea Tanning, a fellow Surrealist and prolific visual artist and poet. While Ernst and Tanning are largely responsible for Sedona's reputation as an artist colony, they relocated to France in the 1950s and remained there until Ernst's death in Paris in 1976. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of Max Ernst art.

During World War II, he briefly fled to the south of France but then returned to his Parisian studio in 1940 and remained there until 1955, when he relocated to a villa near Cannes called La Californie. After a brief stay in the French village of Vauvenargues, he finally moved to Mougins, where he lived until he passed away in 1973. On 1stDibs, explore a range of Pablo Picasso art.

Chuck Close lived in a few places. He was born in Monroe, Washington, in 1940 and grew up in the area. Close attended Everett Community College in Everett, Washington, and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Washington in Seattle. After graduation, Close settled in the Amherst, Massachusetts, area while working at the University of Massachusetts. In 1967, he moved again to New York City, New York, to establish his own studio in Soho. Close died in 2021 in Oceanside, New York. Explore a variety of Chuck Close art on 1stDibs.

Live edge or natural edge furniture incorporates the natural edge of the wood into the piece. This may mean that the artist even leaves the natural cracks, or they might fill them in with resin. Because the pieces are unique and in high demand, the pieces can be more expensive than other wooden furniture.

In a living room, a console is a type of table. Typically, consoles are about the height of a desk but are much narrower. As a result, they work well against walls and can be used to hold lamps and decorative objects. Some also feature shelves for display and storage space or cabinet doors and drawers for hiding clutter. Shop a selection of console tables on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 12, 2021
A live-edge desk is a desk in which the original gnarled shape of the edge of a tree beneath its bark is not sawed off, but it is preserved carefully for a raw look. Unlike traditionally finished desks, a live-edge desk brings the natural lines of the tree into the living space, creating the illusion of being outside within. Find a variety of live-edge desks on 1stDibs today.
