The Legacy of Diamond in Jewelry Design

Antique diamond rings, diamond tiaras and dazzling vintage diamond earrings are on the wish lists of every lover of fine jewelry. And diamonds and diamond jewelry are primarily associated with storybook engagements and red-carpet grand entrances — indeed, this ultra-cherished gemstone has a dramatic history on its hands.

From “A Diamond Is Forever” to “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” pop culture has ingrained in our minds that diamonds are the most desired, the most lasting and the most valuable gemstone. But what makes the diamond so special? Each stone — whether it’s rubies, sapphires or another stone — is unique and important in its own right. April babies might claim diamonds for themselves, but just about everyone wants this kind of sparkle in their lives!

There are several factors that set diamonds apart from other stones, and these points are important to our gem education.

Diamonds are minerals. They are made up of almost entirely of carbon (carbon comprises 99.95 percent; the remainder consists of various trace elements). Diamonds are the hardest gemstones, ranking number 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Even its name, diamond, is rooted in the Greek adamas, or unconquerable. The only object that can scratch a diamond is another diamond. Diamonds are formed deep within the earth at very high temperatures (1,652–2,372 degrees Fahrenheit at depths between 90 and 120 miles beneath the earth’s surface) and are carried up by volcanic activity. Diamonds are quite rare, according to the Gemological Institute of America, and only 30 percent of all the diamonds mined in the world are gem quality.

In the 1950s, the Gemological Institute of America developed the 4Cs grading system to classify diamonds: clarity, color, cut and carat weight. Not all diamonds are created equal (there are diamonds, and then there are diamonds). The value of the diamond depends on the clarity (flawless diamonds are very rare but a diamond's value decreases if there are many blemishes or inclusions), color (the less color the higher the grade), cut (how the diamond’s facets catch the light, certain cuts of diamonds show off the stone better than others) and carat weight (the bigger, the better).

When you start shopping for a diamond engagement ring, always prioritize the cut, which plays the largest role in the diamond's beauty (taking the time to clean your diamond ring at least every six months or so plays a role in maintaining said beauty). And on 1stDibs, a range of buying guides can be found for those in the market for antique engagement ringsvintage engagement rings or Art Deco engagement rings

Shop antique and vintage diamond rings, diamond necklaces and other extraordinary diamond jewelry on 1stDibs.

Questions About Marquise With Baguettes
  • A baguette is a type of diamond cut. A baguette on a ring typically means that the ring is set with a baguette cut diamond. Baguette cut diamonds are classic cuts used as side-stones or accent diamonds.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A ring with baguettes is any ring featuring a baguette cut stone. A baguette cut is a thin, elongated rectangular stone named after the French word for a long and narrow loaf of bread. Browse a wide selection of rings with a variety of cuts, including the baguette, on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
A baguette diamond is a rectangular, step-cut diamond with either straight or tapered edges. Baguette diamonds are small and typically square, although they can also be rectangular. Baguette diamonds are popular gemstones in engagement rings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 17, 2023
Whether marquise diamonds are good is largely a matter of personal preference. However, many people appreciate the shape of the cut or feel that it looks flattering on their hands. Also known as the navette cut (meaning “little boat” or “sailboat” in French), marquise-cut stones are easy to identify due to their elliptical shape that is tapered on both ends. Stones with a marquise cut are considered modified brilliant because they have 58 facets. On 1stDibs, find a variety of diamond jewelry from some of the world's top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 15, 2023
What a marquise diamond symbolizes is largely a matter of individual interpretation. Some people associate the elongated shape with joy and happiness, while others believe it is a symbol of love. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of marquise-cut diamond jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
No, baguette diamonds are often less expensive than other diamond cuts. Since this diamond cut is less expensive than an emerald cut or brilliant cut, it is the perfect ring for someone on a budget who still wants the classic diamond look.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Yes, baguette diamonds are real. Baguette diamonds are diamonds cut in a rectangular shape with 14 facets. The narrow, elongated shape of these diamonds make them the perfect accent stone.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Fendi baguettes usually cost between $2,100 and $3,190 depending on the size. However, a vintage or limited edition Fendi baguette can cost more than $10,000.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, it is possible to diamond test baguettes. However, you should leave the work to a licensed jewelry appraiser in order to avoid damaging the jewelry and to ensure that the tests yield accurate results. On 1stDibs, shop a range of expertly vetted diamond gemstone jewelry.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
The term “diamond baguette” means small step-cut diamonds in a rectangular shape. Typically, jewelry designers use them as accent stones in engagement rings that feature square or rectangular center stones. You'll find a large collection of diamond gemstone jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Tapered baguette diamonds are diamonds featuring a baguette cut that angles narrower at one end. The baguette cut is long and thin, and features step-cut sides, though the corners are cut diagonally to create the tapered shape. Shop a collection of authentic tapered baguette diamonds from top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 5, 2023
A Fendi Baguette is called that due to its shape. Creator Silvia Venturini Fendi thought the bag fit under the arm in a way similar to how a baguette bread loaf does. In 1997, Fendi introduced the Baguette and another bag inspired by the boulangerie, the curvy Croissant. On 1stDibs, shop an assortment of Fendi bags.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
How you style a Fendi Baguette is largely personal preference. You can adjust the strap to various lengths to change the manner in which you carry it. Its versatile design works equally well with a suit for work or jeans and a t-shirt on the weekend. Shop a collection of Fendi Baguette bags on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023
Baguette diamonds were especially popular during the 1920s and 1930s. You will commonly see diamonds cut into the rectangular stepped cut on Art Deco and Art Nouveau jewelry pieces. Contemporary jewelry may also feature baguette diamonds, especially those inspired by the style of early 20th-century rings, necklaces, earrings and brooches. On 1stDibs, shop an assortment of baguette diamond jewelry.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023
The Fendi Baguette was first made in 1997. Designer Silvia Venturini Fendi created the iconic handbag, which gets its name from the fact that it sits under the arm in a way that mirrors how one might carry a baguette, which is a slender, long loaf of French bread. Find a selection of Fendi Baguette bags from some of the world’s top boutiques on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023
Marquise cut diamonds can be less expensive per carat compared to other popular diamond shapes. The 4Cs, the grading system that was established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in the 1950s, are the guidelines that determine how marquise diamonds are graded. The price of marquise cut diamonds will be affected by market conditions as well as the aforementioned 4Cs, which are carat weight, color, clarity, and cut quality. Find a collection of diamond jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
No, a baguette-cut and an emerald-cut are not the same. A baguette-cut is a rectangular cut with sharp 90 degree corners, whereas an emerald-cut will feature cut corners that result in a less angular look. Shop a range of both baguette-cut and emerald-cut jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 5, 2023
Silvia Venturini Fendi made the first Fendi Baguette bag. The iconic bag debuted in 1997 and got its name from its unique shape, which allows it to rest under the arm the way a baguette bread loaf does. It became well known after the character Carrie Bradshaw, portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker, carried it on the television show Sex and the City. On 1stDibs, find a variety of Fendi Baguette bags.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 19, 2021
A marquise-cut diamond looks great in a variety of settings, but you should choose one that protects the center stone. Some of the top marquise diamond ring settings are bezel, prong and halo. Find a variety of marquise-cut diamond rings on 1stDibs today.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
To authenticate a vintage Fendi baguette, first ensure the serial number tag is present behind the brand logo tag on the interior of the baguette. If there’s no number, or if the tagged area looks sloppy or different from pictures of a genuine article, you’ve got a fake. Always look for excellent craftsmanship. An authentic Fendi bag should be built to last, and uneven stitching or other signs of sloppy workmanship are indications that the bag isn't genuine. Shop a collection of expertly-vetted vintage Fendi bags on 1stDibs.
