How Much is a No Heat Paraiba?
The Legacy of Tourmaline in Jewelry Design
Very few gems dazzle quite in the manner that tourmaline does — vintage and antique tourmaline jewelry is a showstopper, and you can blame this on its wide range of spectacular colors. In fact, when Dutch traders brought stones back home from Sri Lanka that they couldn't identify, they called them "toramalli," a Sinhalese term for "mixed gems."
If you could transform the ocean to a gem, this is what it would look like: a clear, translucent azure, bordering on turquoise, hypnotizing in its depth and sparkling in the sun.
There is, in fact, such a stone, although it comes from deep in the copper-rich mountains of Paraíba, Brazil, and not from the oceans along its coast. Far rarer than diamonds, Paraíba tourmaline, a kind of tourmaline discovered only in the 1980s, is treasured as much for its extraordinary color as its scarcity, both of which contribute to its high value.
While diamonds generally sell for about $6,000 per carat, a carat of Paraíba tourmaline is likely to fetch about $16,000. Fans of the gem are said to include singer Taylor Swift and actress Zooey Deschanel, as well as some of the finest jewelers.
“No other stone can have a color as magnetic and captivating as Paraíba tourmaline,” says Vania Leles of VanLeles Diamonds, who combines the stone with diamonds and other gems in several of her designs.
You don't have to stop at Paraíba tourmaline jewelry — on 1stDibs, find the most extraordinary antique and vintage tourmaline rings, tourmaline and diamond earrings and other accessories.
- What is a no-heat sapphire?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022A no-heat sapphire is a sapphire gemstone in its natural state. It differs from sapphires that undergo heat treatment to enhance their surface. Generally, no-heat sapphires are smoother, while heated sapphires are harder and more lustrous. - 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Incredibly rare, the lovely blue-green Paraiba tourmaline gems are found in Brazil, Nigeria and Mozambique. Their color is what makes them so rare and so highly desirable. First discovered in Paraiba in northeastern Brazil, hence the name of this stone, it has since been found in other regions. However, the Brazilian Paraiba tourmalines continue to be more valuable and have a more intense hue than gems sourced in other locations. On 1stDibs, find Paraiba tourmaline jewelry from top sellers around the world.
- Do sapphires conduct heat?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022Yes, sapphires conduct heat. In fact, a real one won't melt until it reaches a temperature of 3,711 degrees F. As a result, one way that experts test sapphires to determine if they are real is to heat them to high temperatures. Find a collection of sapphire gemstone jewelry on 1stDibs.

- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Whether or not terracotta pots can withstand heat depends on how well they are made and cared for. A finely crafted pot can usually hold up in the face of high temperatures. If you intend to cook with one, season it with cooking oil to increase its durability. Shop a collection of terracotta pots on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022No, not all fireplaces need a heat shield. However, a heat shield can enhance the visual appearance of the space while also protecting the room. Carefully measure your fireplace to ensure the best fit. Shop a wide range of heat shields and fireplace inserts on 1stDibs.
Roman Malakov DiamondsMarch 22, 2021A heated ruby is a ruby wherein 1600 - 1700 degrees centigrade of heat is applied to the stone to improve it's color, luster, and/or clarity. This is a common method for most rubies is not a bad at all. What makes unheated rubies valuable is their rarity. To find a beautiful ruby that does not need heat to improve it's beauty is very rare and highly unlikely.- Which mugs hold heat best?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertMarch 31, 2023There is no single mug type or brand of mugs that holds heat best. While materials do play a role in determining how well mugs hold hot beverages at temperature, other factors like whether the metal is insulated, how well the mug is crafted and how tightly the lid fits also have an impact.
