Find the exact no oil emerald you’re shopping for in the variety available on 1stDibs. Each design created in this style — which was crafted with great care and often made from platinum, gold and 18k gold — can elevate any look. In our selection of items, you can find a vintage example as well as a contemporary version. Finding the perfect no oil emerald may mean sifting through those created during different time periods — you can find an early version that dates to the 18th Century and a newer variation that were made as recently as the 21st Century. For this particular piece, .5 carat and 1 carat are consistently popular carat weights. A no oil emerald from Merkaba, Emilio! and Tsarina Jewels — each of whom created a beautiful version of this treasured accessory — is worth considering. A no oil emerald of any era or style can lend versatility to your look, but a version featuring emerald, from our inventory of 312, is particularly popular. See these pages for an emerald cut iteration of this accessory, while there are also oval cut cut and cushion cut cut versions available here, too. When shopping for a no oil emerald, you’ll find that there are less available pieces for unisex or men today than there are for women.

How Much is a No Oil Emerald?

The Legacy of Emerald in Jewelry Design

No one liked emeralds and emerald jewelry more than Elizabeth Taylor (or her alter ego, Cleopatra). Emeralds were first discovered in Egypt around 330 BC. The stone’s name originated from the ancient Greek word for green, “smaragdus.” According to the Gemological Institute of America, “Emeralds from what is now Colombia were part of the plunder when 16th-century Spanish explorers invaded the New World. The Incas had already been using emeralds in their jewelry and religious ceremonies for 500 years. The Spaniards, who treasured gold and silver far more than gems, traded emeralds for precious metals. Their trades opened the eyes of European and Asian royalty to emerald’s majesty.”

There are numerous myths attributed to the emerald’s spiritual powers, like placing an emerald under your tongue will allow you to see the future. But be careful not to swallow the birthstone for May, or that future won’t be so bright!

There are many important (read: large) emeralds in museum collections around the world. The Patricia Emerald, named after the miner’s daughter, is a 632-carat dihexagonal (or 12-sided) crystal that was discovered in Colombia in 1920 and now resides at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington has in its possession the Hooker Emerald, a 75.47-carat Colombian stone. That emerald had been acquired in the 16th or 17th century by Spanish conquistadores and shipped to Europe. It later belonged to Abdul Hamid II, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire (1876–1909), who wore it on his belt buckle. Purchased at auction by Tiffany Co. in 1911, the Hooker Emerald was set into a tiara and featured in the New York World’s Fair “House of Jewels” exhibit in 1940. Today, it is part of a brooch, also designed by the jewelry house.

On 1stDibs, find a range of antique and vintage emerald jewelry and watches that includes emerald rings, emerald necklaces and other accessories.

Questions About No Oil Emerald
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, natural emeralds need to be oiled. Natural emeralds will have cracks and fissures before treatment, and oils will help give the emerald a high sheen and attractive finish. Browse a wide selection of emerald jewelry pieces from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A no oil emerald is an emerald that has not been treated with oil. Generally, emeralds are oiled to fill in fractures and enhance clarity. A no oil emerald is considered rare and more valuable than standard emeralds. Shop a collection of no oil emerald jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
To tell if an emerald has been oiled, look for white or yellow branch patterns along the surface of the gem. If you see them, the gem is likely oiled. Also, examine it under a magnifying glass for any signs of trapped bubbles. These also indicate an oiled gemstone. Consulting a licensed jewelry appraiser is the best way to accurately identify oiled emeralds. You'll find a collection of expertly vetted emerald gemstone jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, Zambian emeralds are indeed real emeralds. In fact, they are a superior variety of natural emeralds, known for their deep green hue and slight blue overtone. On 1stDibs, find a collection of authentic emerald gems from some of the world’s top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Emeralds are quite rare. This gemstone is rarer and more expensive than a diamond.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021
A cabochon emerald is a gemstone that has been cut and polished to feature a dome shape on top and a flat bottom. It is smooth and has no facets. Although faceted gemstones are quite popular, non-faceted gems are also in style. For example, cabochons are smoothly polished instead of faceted, and are usually oval-shaped. Many people love cabochons for their simplicity and elegance. Carved cabochons also make interesting pieces. For example, the cameo gemstone, which features a carved silhouette, has made a resurgence in recent years. On 1stDibs, find a variety of antique and vintage cabochon emerald jewelry.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 17, 2021
A blue emerald is an emerald with blue-green color whose primary hue is green and secondary hue is blue. The most desirable emeralds are typically highly saturated bluish green to pure green and highly transparent. Find a collection of emerald jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • Emeralds that are made in the laboratory are considered synthetic emeralds.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021

Both emerald types are grown under the same heat and pressure environments. Shop a collection of expertly vetted gems from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
For much of history, an emerald has been known to signify truth and love. Today, emeralds have come to be known as the stone of intuition and revelations of truths.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022

  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 15, 2023
A completely natural emerald is rare. Often, emeralds go through treatments to enhance their appearance or durability. Compared to diamonds, emeralds are actually 20 times rarer. While they’re rare, emeralds are gemstones to purchase if you’re on a budget because they appear larger than a diamond of the same carat weight due to their lower density. Emeralds are believed by many to symbolize royalty, love and mysticism. On 1stDibs, shop a selection of emerald jewelry from some of the world’s top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
An emerald cut ruby is held in a double-claw setting, surrounded by a border of diamonds. The diamonds provide a beautiful contrast with the red of the ruby. Shop a selection of dazzling emerald cut rubies from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Emeralds are 20 times rarer than diamonds. Therefore, typically emeralds are more expensive than diamonds.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 13, 2024
Yes, Effy emeralds are generally real. However, not all pieces feature natural emeralds. The luxury jewelry maker uses a mix of naturally derived and lab-created gemstones in its jewelry. Experts consider lab-created emeralds to be real gemstones, but they are inexpensive compared to natural stones. Because lab-grown diamonds don’t meet our luxury jewelry standards, 1stDibs does not allow listings that are inclusive of lab-grown diamonds on the platform (this policy is also shared by major auction houses). However, fashion jewelry that features lab-grown or cultured gemstones other than diamonds can be found on the site. On 1stDibs, explore a collection of Effy jewelry from some of the world's top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Colombian emeralds are special because they are purer than the gemstones found in other countries. The lack of iron in their composition gives them a high degree of clarity and more vibrant color. On 1stDibs, find a range of Colombian emerald gemstone jewelry.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Not to be confused with an emerald gemstone, an emerald-cut sapphire is a sapphire cut into a rectangular shape. An emerald-cut adds the illusion of flashing lights across the stone with its unique shape and step-cut along the edges. Browse a wide selection of sapphire jewelry in a variety of cuts on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Emeralds are frequently cut into squares due to their properties. Because they are brittle, the gemstones benefit from stronger rectangular and square shapes. Also, these cuts tend to hide the natural blemishes found in many emeralds. Shop a large selection of emerald gemstone jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 19, 2021
The most expensive and the most prized emeralds are the deep, green-colored gems. The variety of colors owes to the exact amount of trace elements chromium, vanadium and iron in the stone. Find a collection of antique and vintage emerald jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
An asscher cut emerald has a higher crown, smaller table and larger step facets than a traditional emerald cut. Between the two cuts, the asscher cut emerald is more brilliant. Find a collection of expertly vetted gems from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
    1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
An asscher cut is a type of step cut for a gemstone. It features large step facets with a small table and high crown, giving off a gorgeous brilliance. Asscher cuts are known for an “X” pattern that’s visible when you look straight down at the gem. Shop a collection of asscher cut emeralds and other gemstones on 1stDibs from some of the world’s top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
An emerald ring symbolizes new beginnings, true love and fidelity. As a result, the gemstone makes for a meaningful engagement ring. In addition, emeralds are the birthstone for the month of May. Shop a variety of emerald rings on 1stDibs.
