Finding the Right Decorative Objects for You

Every time you move into a house or an apartment — or endeavor to refresh the home you’ve lived in for years — life for that space begins anew. The right home accent, be it the simple placement of a decorative bowl on a shelf or a ceramic vase for fresh flowers, can transform an area from drab to spectacular. But with so many materials and items to choose from, it’s easy to get lost in the process. The key to styling with antique and vintage decorative objects is to work toward making a happy home that best reflects your personal style.

Ceramics are a versatile addition to any home. If you’ve amassed an assortment of functional pottery over the years, think of your mugs and salad bowls as decorative objects, ideal for displaying in a glass cabinet. Vintage ceramic serveware can pop along white open shelving in your dining area, while large stoneware pitchers paired with woven baskets or quilts in an open cupboard can introduce a rustic farmhouse-style element to your den.

Translucent decorative boxes or bowls made of an acrylic plastic called Lucite — a game changer in furniture that’s easy to clean and lasts long — are modern accents that are neutral enough to dress up a coffee table or desktop without cluttering it. If you’re showcasing pieces from the past, a vintage jewelry box for displaying your treasures can spark conversation: Where is the jewelry box from? Is there a story behind it?

Abstract sculptures or an antique vessel for your home library can draw attention to your book collection and add narrative charm to the most appropriate of corners. There’s more than one way to style your bookcases, and decorative objects add a provocative dynamic. “I love magnifying glasses,” says Alex Assouline, global vice president of luxury publisher Assouline, of adding one’s cherished objects to a home library. “They are both useful and decorative. Objects really elevate libraries and can also make them more personal.”

To help with personalizing your space and truly making it your own, find an extraordinary collection of decorative objects on 1stDibs.

Questions About Objects For Objects
  • Irena Orlov ArtMarch 1, 2021
These are found objects that the artist intervenes. They are based on the fantasies and representations that can arise when subconscious acts are performed. They have a symbolic function and leave no room for formal concerns, but depend only on the imagination of each person.

Many pieces could arguably be considered the most Surreal object that Dalí created. During his lifetime, the artist created a number of thought-provoking works like the Aphrodisiac Telephone, a mixed media sculpture that featured a lobster perched on a rotary telephone, and Surrealist Object Functioning Symbolically, a woman's shoe positioned in a glass of milk in a wooden frame accompanied by a box of sugar lumps, a spoon and an erotic photograph. Shop an assortment of Salvador Dalí art from some of the world's top galleries on 1stDibs.

Kartell started making plastic objects shortly after its founding in 1949. The company began as an industrial design firm, producing useful items like ski racks for automobiles and laboratory equipment designed to replace breakable glass with sturdy plastic. Even as companies like Olivetti and Vespa made Italian design popular in the 1950s, typewriters and scooters remained relatively costly. Kartell founders Giulio Castelli and Anna Ferrieri wanted to provide Italian consumers with affordable, stylish goods. They launched a housewares division in 1953, making lighting fixtures, kitchen tools and accessories from colorful molded plastic. Buoyed by its success in the home goods market, Kartell introduced its Habitat division in 1963. On 1stDibs, shop a wide range of Kartell furniture.

Najeonchilgi is a crafting method where colorful pieces of shellfish are inlaid on an object. For more than 2,000 years, Korean artisans have used it to produce furniture like cabinets and tables and small decorative objects like wooden boxes. Find a collection of inlaid wood furniture and decorative objects on 1stDibs.

The inkstone was the most precious and permanent object in a Japanese writing set. It is a mortar used for mixing dry ink with water for the purposes of writing. You'll find a selection of Japanese writing boxes on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 26, 2020

The more optimal its condition, the more valuable an antique will likely be. If an item is perfectly uniform with no color, this is likely indicative that it is a modern mass-produced reproduction and thus, less valuable. When 1stDibs vets an item, we look for item condition and patina to determine if an item shows signs of age.
