Shell chairs are iconic mid-century modern chairs designed by Hans J. Wegner and first released in 1963. In terms of both process and aesthetics, the Shell chair was ahead of its time when it was introduced. The expressive seat and back are made out of form-pressed oak or walnut laminates and topped with upholstered cushions for maximum comfort. Its design includes a tapered three-leg structure with two front legs made of one continuous piece and a separate hind leg that supports the backrest. This gives the chair a feeling of lightness without sacrificing stability. On 1stDibs, find a selection of Shell chairs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023
Whether the Shell chair is comfortable is largely a matter of personal opinion. However, creator Hans J. Wegner designed the curves of the backrest and the seat to complement the contours of the human body in order to provide ample support when the Shell chair made its debut in 1963. Chairs became Wegner’s specialty, and over the years he designed over 500 of them. More than 100 of his designs, such as the Wishbone chair and the Papa Bear chair, went into production. Shop a selection of Shell chairs and other vintage Hans Wegner seating on 1stDibs.

Yes, if used properly, some artillery shells can explode. In the 19th century, artillery shells were designed to burst on impact causing shrapnel. Military collectors and firearm enthusiasts often proudly display artillery shells as vintage decor. Shop a selection of military memorabilia on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2024
The history of the Wegner Shell Chair begins in 1963. Hans J. Wegner unveiled the chair at the Furniture Guild Exhibition in Copenhagen, Denmark. Often described as being "wing-like," the chair's radical fluid lines were considered a bit too futuristic at the time. Initially, mixed reviews from critics and the general public, as well as production difficulties, resulted in a very limited early run. Twelve new models were produced for a retrospective exhibition celebrating Wegner's 77th birthday in 1989, and the design began garnering renewed attention (a photograph of the chair was even selected to grace the cover of the exhibition catalog). In 1998, nearly a decade following the piece's reemergence at the retrospective event, Carl Hansen Søn reintroduced the Shell chair 35 years after it was first released, and it has felt relevant ever since. On 1stDibs, shop an assortment of Hans Wegner Shell chairs.

Capiz shell designs have been described as rustic and boho. Capiz is a type of flat pearl made from a windowpane oyster found in and named for the province of Capiz in the Philippines. On 1stDibs, find a collection of Capiz shell items from some of the world’s top sellers.

In nature, you can find giant clam shells along the shorelines of the Philippines and in the Sabah coral reefs in Malaysian Borneo. To purchase giant clam shells, check out reputable online platforms, auction houses and antique stores. On 1stDibs, shop a variety of giant clam shells.

Whether or not the Wegner shell chair is comfortable is largely a matter of personal preference. Wegner did design the dramatically curved seat and gently tapered back to properly support the contours of the human body. On 1stDibs, shop a range of Hans Wegner chairs.

Using a lampshade as a guide, line up a row of pre-drilled capiz shells until you reach the desired length. String them together by using a fishing line and finish by tying the strands onto the lamp shade. Alternatively, shop a selection of capiz shell items on 1stDibs.

To tell how old a pair of glasses is, you can examine it closely and then conduct some research using trusted online resources. If you see a mark that indicates the maker, use the manufacturer as a starting point. Find out when the company was in business and look at catalogues and other references to determine when it produced similar styles. If you can't find a maker, your glasses will likely be from the late 20th century or earlier. In this case, you can research the characteristics of your glasses to get a rough idea of the age. For example, nose pads didn't come into use until the 1920s. Another feature of eyeglasses introduced in the 1920s is positioning the temples at the upper corners of the frames rather than in the middle. If you need help with dating, consult a certified appraiser or knowledgeable antique dealer. On 1stDibs, explore a collection of eyeglasses.

No one can say for sure who made the first pair of pants. However, anthropologists and archaeologists have traced the origins of pants back to ancient China. The oldest pants to have been discovered so far date back to between the 13th and 10th centuries B.C. These early garments were found on mummies in tombs in the Tarim Basin of western China. Find a large selection of pants for men and women on 1stDibs.

No one knows for sure what the first pair of jeans looked like, as historians are unsure who created the earliest example of jeans. However, we do have a rough idea of what the first Levi Strauss Co. jeans produced during the 1830s looked like. They were blue denim trousers with straight, relaxed legs. The jeans featured five riveted pockets and a button fly. Instead of belt loops, the jeans had one single angled loop at the waist designed to hold a hammer or other tool. Shop a wide range of jeans from some of the world's top boutiques on 1stDibs.

To pair an oval engagement ring with a wedding band, first consider the shape. Both domed and flat bands can complement the shape of an oval-cut gemstone. You may also want to consider a contoured band that will hug the curves of the gem. Next, decide what type of metal will coordinate with the engagement ring. An easy choice is to have the two rings crafted out of the same metal, such as 18-karat yellow gold or platinum. Explore a large selection of wedding bands on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 19, 2021
The average cost of a pair of diamond stud earrings with a total carat weight of 1-carat is $2,495. Depending on the clarity, cut and color of the diamond, the price and other details may vary. On 1sDibs, shop for antique and vintage diamond earrings.

What pairs well with the CH07 chair by Hans Wegner is largely a matter of personal preference. To keep the eye focused on its dramatic curves, some interior decorators pair it with simple boxy sofas and tables. Feel free to experiment and create your own furniture layouts using the CH07 or shell chair. Find a collection of Hans Wegner CH07 shell chairs on 1stDibs.
