The Legacy of Diamond in Jewelry Design

Antique diamond rings, diamond tiaras and dazzling vintage diamond earrings are on the wish lists of every lover of fine jewelry. And diamonds and diamond jewelry are primarily associated with storybook engagements and red-carpet grand entrances — indeed, this ultra-cherished gemstone has a dramatic history on its hands.

From “A Diamond Is Forever” to “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” pop culture has ingrained in our minds that diamonds are the most desired, the most lasting and the most valuable gemstone. But what makes the diamond so special? Each stone — whether it’s rubies, sapphires or another stone — is unique and important in its own right. April babies might claim diamonds for themselves, but just about everyone wants this kind of sparkle in their lives!

There are several factors that set diamonds apart from other stones, and these points are important to our gem education.

Diamonds are minerals. They are made up of almost entirely of carbon (carbon comprises 99.95 percent; the remainder consists of various trace elements). Diamonds are the hardest gemstones, ranking number 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Even its name, diamond, is rooted in the Greek adamas, or unconquerable. The only object that can scratch a diamond is another diamond. Diamonds are formed deep within the earth at very high temperatures (1,652–2,372 degrees Fahrenheit at depths between 90 and 120 miles beneath the earth’s surface) and are carried up by volcanic activity. Diamonds are quite rare, according to the Gemological Institute of America, and only 30 percent of all the diamonds mined in the world are gem quality.

In the 1950s, the Gemological Institute of America developed the 4Cs grading system to classify diamonds: clarity, color, cut and carat weight. Not all diamonds are created equal (there are diamonds, and then there are diamonds). The value of the diamond depends on the clarity (flawless diamonds are very rare but a diamond's value decreases if there are many blemishes or inclusions), color (the less color the higher the grade), cut (how the diamond’s facets catch the light, certain cuts of diamonds show off the stone better than others) and carat weight (the bigger, the better).

When you start shopping for a diamond engagement ring, always prioritize the cut, which plays the largest role in the diamond's beauty (taking the time to clean your diamond ring at least every six months or so plays a role in maintaining said beauty). And on 1stDibs, a range of buying guides can be found for those in the market for antique engagement ringsvintage engagement rings or Art Deco engagement rings

Questions About Platinum And Onyx
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Edwardian jewelry is the last era of jewelry to be defined by a British monarch’s rule. For many of the Edwardian designs, platinum was the material of choice. In 1903, the invention of the acetylene torch meant that platinum’s dense, malleable form could be heated and fashioned into the desired jewelry designs. Shop a selection of Edwardian jewelry from some of the world’s top art dealers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
What an onyx ring symbolizes is largely a matter of personal interpretation. In ancient Persia and India, people often wore onyx jewelry to protect themselves from evil. As a result, many people associate the rings with good fortune or safety. Others equate the gemstone rings with memory or the Leo and Capricorn zodiac signs. Shop a variety of onyx gemstone rings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
One way to tell if your black onyx is real or not is to use a scratch test. Because black onyx clocks in at 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, it can’t be scratched by softer materials. Use a copper penny or a steel knife and scratch the surface of your stone. If the object leaves a scratch on the stone, it isn’t real black onyx. On 1stDibs, you’ll find a collection of genuine black onyx jewelry from some of the world’s top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 12, 2021
The material of the ring setting is a driving factor in what a black onyx ring is worth. An onyx ring with a sterling silver ring setting can be purchased at under $30 as well. Black onyx is a semi-precious gemstone, with prices ranging from $1 to $500 per carat. Find a collection of vintage and designer black onyx rings on 1stDibs today.
  • A black onyx ring is a ring set with an onyx gemstone. Onyx is a semi-precious gemstone that typically comes in the color black.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 7, 2024
Yes, onyx can be a good material for a dining table. The mineral is strong, but it is relatively lightweight, making tables easy to move throughout a room as needed. Many people find the color and luster of onyx tabletops to be visually appealing. Since the material can become scratched or damaged by heat, it is important to take steps to protect an onyx dining table by using felt-backed trivets or heat-resistant fabric mats beneath hot dishes. On 1stDibs, explore a collection of onyx dining tables.
  • 1stDibs ExpertDecember 12, 2023
No, most engagement rings aren't platinum. Some people do prefer platinum due to its appearance and its resistance to scratching and fading. However, makers offer engagement rings in a wide range of precious metals, including white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, titanium and sterling silver. Shop a large selection of engagement rings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, Cartier uses platinum in the production of their jewelry and other items. In fact, Alfred Cartier and his three sons are credited with mastering this metal and creating a process that made it possible for jewelers to use this metal efficiently. Find vintage and contemporary Cartier jewelry from some of the world’s top boutiques on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
On average, a platinum band would typically cost around $1,000. However, if there are any gemstones, the cost would likely be much higher.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 21, 2023
If it seems like most engagement rings are platinum, you’ve likely been shopping at retailers and boutiques that primarily specialize in the sale of platinum jewelry. It’s true that platinum is among the most popular metals for engagement rings. Cartier pioneered the use of platinum in fine jewelry in the late 1800s, identifying the strong, lustrous metal as ideal for bringing out the true qualities of diamonds. However, engagement rings are in fact created with a range of many other materials, such as yellow gold, white gold, rose gold and titanium. On 1stDibs, find a large selection of engagement rings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
While preferences differ, platinum is generally considered to be better than gold. Platinum is a naturally occurring white metal that is rarer, heavier, and harder than gold. Due to its hardness, platinum is able to be used in a much purer form than gold, which makes the metal more expensive.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 21, 2023
Yes, platinum can be good for earrings. Many people love the cool color and sleek appearance of platinum, and the metal can be beautiful on its own or used as a setting for gemstones. Platinum is unlikely to tarnish, fade or require refinishing as it ages, and it is fairly resistant to scratches as well. On 1stDibs, find a wide range of platinum earrings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023
Yes, platinum is good for wedding rings, as the precious metal offers many benefits. Platinum doesn't corrode or tarnish, and its color doesn't fade over time. It is also a hypoallergenic metal, making it a popular choice for people with sensitive skin. Plus, it resists scratches and wear over time. Explore a collection of antique and vintage platinum wedding rings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023
Yes, platinum is used in wedding rings. As the metal of choice for wedding jewelry, platinum offers long-lasting durability, as it is strong and scratch-resistant. The metal also doesn't fade and is unlikely to tarnish or corrode, allowing it to maintain its cool color and sleek appearance with very little need for ongoing maintenance. On 1stDibs, shop a large collection of platinum wedding rings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Because platinum is denser than other metals, it is often more expensive to purchase platinum watches than gold. One of the most expensive watches sold was a Platinum Rolex worth $277,000.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Maybe. Rolex may discontinue the platinum Daytona, but they haven’t made any official announcements yet. The platinum Daytona, or Platona was first released in 2013. Shop a collection of Rolex Daytona watches from top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A platinum print can last up to thousands of years. Platinum is an exceptionally stable metal, making this kind of print one of the most enduring ways to display and preserve a photograph. Browse a collection of platinum prints from top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 21, 2023
Yes, some Tiffany Co. engagement rings are platinum. However, the luxury jewelry maker also offers engagement rings made out of other materials. These include 18-karat yellow gold, 18-karat white gold and 18-karat rose gold. On 1stDibs, find a wide variety of Tiffany Co. engagement rings from some of the world's top dealers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 23, 2024
Whether platinum is the best for engagement rings depends on your personal preferences. Many people prize the precious metal for its sleek, cool color and choose it for engagement jewelry as a result. Platinum is also highly resistant to corrosion and tarnishing and is unlikely to require replating when cared for properly. In addition, the metal is fairly durable and scratch-resistant. Find a wide variety of platinum engagement rings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Yes, platinum is more expensive than white gold due to its rarity. Additionally, it is more durable and generally requires less polishing than white goal.
