The Italian design group led by Italian architectural and product designer Ettore Sottsass is called the Memphis Group. To many people, postmodern design is synonymous with the Memphis Group. This Italian collaborative created the most radical and attention-getting designs of the period, upending most of the accepted standards of how furniture should look. The group decided to design, produce and market its own collection, one that wouldn’t be restricted by concerns like functionality and so-called good taste. Its debut at Milan’s 1981 Salone del Mobile drew thousands of viewers and caused a major stir in design circles. In addition to Sottsass, the members of the group included Andrea Branzi, Aldo Cibic, Michele de Lucchi, Nathalie du Pasquier, Kuramata, Paola Navone, Peter Shire, George Sowden and Barbara Radice, who was Sottsass's wife. The Italian designer who was famous for their psychedelic silk prints is Emilio Pucci. By the mid-1960s, the international fashion press, enamored of his dazzling scarves and slithery dresses, had dubbed the Florentine designer the Prince of Prints. He also applied his colorful, abstract patterns to artistic media such as ceramics. Find a wide range of Emilio Pucci apparel and accessories on 1stDibs.
