Finding the Right Seating for You

With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.

Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.

Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.

The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.

Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.

With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.

Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.

No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.

There are a few differences between the AP Royal Oak and Royal Oak Offshore. First, the Offshore is bigger than the classic Royal Oak. Offshore models start at 42 millimeters, while the classic Royal Oak is 41 millimeters or less. The Offshore also has bolder details, such as a larger Tapisserie pattern on the dial. In addition, the Offshore is available in materials not commonly used to produce the classic Royal Oak, such as rubber and ceramic. Find a wide range of Audemars Piguet watches on 1stDibs.

Gérald Genta created the Royal Oak watch. First introduced in 1972, the Royal Oak wristwatch featured a now-legendary design that Genta borrowed from antique diving helmets. These helmets were crafted in brass and attached to a diving suit with large screws. Genta translated the motif from the rim of the diving helmet to Audemars Piguet’s newest timepiece, setting eight miniature screws into an octagonal bezel, which surrounded a textured “tapisserie,” or tapestry, dial. In addition to its unique bezel design, the Royal Oak — named for a group of vessels in Britain’s Royal Navy, according to legend — was also unorthodox for its material. Though stainless steel is a ubiquitous option in watches today, in the early 1970s, its use was visionary. The Royal Oak was the first luxury sports timepiece to be made from the durable material — a perfect choice for blending the form and function that are now synonymous with sports watches. Arguably the most prolific freelance watch designer in history, Genta designed timepieces for Omega, Patek Philippe, Cartier and Bulgari, to name a few, but the Royal Oak remains one of his most influential. To tell if an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is fake, first examine the details of the case. A genuine timepiece will have even beveling and fluid edges. Irregular beveling or rough spots usually indicate a replica. Next, examine the dial with a magnifying glass. You should notice two distinct textures in the iconic "Tapisserie" pattern. Fake timepieces will often have raised squares that are smooth rather than textured. When in doubt, consult a licensed appraiser or experienced dealer for assistance with authentication. Shop a large selection of Audemars Piguet watches from some of the world's top dealers on 1stDibs.

It can be difficult to state exactly what type of watch the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is due to the very nature of its design. Before its release, most watches for men were either dress watches or sports watches. Its creator, Gérald Genta, intended for the Royal Oak to be a bridge between the two. It has sporty features like an octagonal case and specially designed bezel screws, but also has dressier details. Some people refer to it as a sports dress watch due to this unique blend of elements. On 1stDibs, shop an assortment of Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watches.

To tell a fake Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore apart from a real one, first closely examine the dial. The tapisserie pattern on the dial should feature raised squares in a regular pattern. On fakes, the dial is often just stamped with a grid to mimic the complex texture of an authentic Offshore. Also, look at the finish on the case. A real Oak Offshore will have an even finish all over with no variations in color or rough spots. Any flaws indicate that you're likely looking at a replica. When in doubt, a licensed appraiser or knowledgeable appraiser can assist you with authentication. Explore a collection of Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore watches on 1stDibs.
