A Close Look at Modern Jewelry

Rooted in centuries of history of adornment dating back to the ancient world, modern jewelry reimagines traditional techniques, forms and materials for expressive new pieces. As opposed to contemporary jewelry, which responds to the moment in which it was created, modern jewelry often describes designs from the 20th to 21st centuries that reflect movements and trends in visual culture.

Modern jewelry emerged from the 19th-century shift away from jewelry indicating rank or social status. The Industrial Revolution allowed machine-made jewelry using electric gold plating, metal alloys and imitation stones, making beautiful jewelry widely accessible. Although mass production deemphasized the materials of the jewelry, the vision of the designer remained important, something that would be furthered in the 1960s with what’s known as the “critique of preciousness.”

A design fair called the “Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes” brought global attention to the Art Deco style in 1925 and gathered a mix of jewelry artists alongside master jewelers like Van Cleef Arpels, Mauboussin and Boucheron. Art Deco designs from Cartier and Van Cleef Arpels unconventionally mixed gemstones like placing rock crystals next to diamonds while borrowing motifs from eclectic sources including Asian lacquer and Persian carpets. Among Cartier’s foremost design preoccupations at the time were high-contrast color combinations and crisp, geometric forms and patterns. In the early 20th century, modernist jewelers like Margaret De Patta and artists such as Alexander Calder — who is better known for his kinetic sculptures than his provocative jewelry — explored sculptural metalwork in which geometric shapes and lines were preferred over elaborate ornamentation.

Many of the innovations in modern jewelry were propelled by women designers such as Wendy Ramshaw, who used paper to craft her accessories in the 1960s. During the 1970s, Elsa Peretti created day-to-night pieces for Tiffany Co. while designers like Lea Stein experimented with layering plastic, a material that had been employed in jewelry since the mid-19th century and had expanded into Bakelite, acrylics and other unique materials.

The Legacy of Diamond in Jewelry Design

Antique diamond rings, diamond tiaras and dazzling vintage diamond earrings are on the wish lists of every lover of fine jewelry. And diamonds and diamond jewelry are primarily associated with storybook engagements and red-carpet grand entrances — indeed, this ultra-cherished gemstone has a dramatic history on its hands.

From “A Diamond Is Forever” to “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” pop culture has ingrained in our minds that diamonds are the most desired, the most lasting and the most valuable gemstone. But what makes the diamond so special? Each stone — whether it’s rubies, sapphires or another stone — is unique and important in its own right. April babies might claim diamonds for themselves, but just about everyone wants this kind of sparkle in their lives!

There are several factors that set diamonds apart from other stones, and these points are important to our gem education.

Diamonds are minerals. They are made up of almost entirely of carbon (carbon comprises 99.95 percent; the remainder consists of various trace elements). Diamonds are the hardest gemstones, ranking number 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Even its name, diamond, is rooted in the Greek adamas, or unconquerable. The only object that can scratch a diamond is another diamond. Diamonds are formed deep within the earth at very high temperatures (1,652–2,372 degrees Fahrenheit at depths between 90 and 120 miles beneath the earth’s surface) and are carried up by volcanic activity. Diamonds are quite rare, according to the Gemological Institute of America, and only 30 percent of all the diamonds mined in the world are gem quality.

In the 1950s, the Gemological Institute of America developed the 4Cs grading system to classify diamonds: clarity, color, cut and carat weight. Not all diamonds are created equal (there are diamonds, and then there are diamonds). The value of the diamond depends on the clarity (flawless diamonds are very rare but a diamond's value decreases if there are many blemishes or inclusions), color (the less color the higher the grade), cut (how the diamond’s facets catch the light, certain cuts of diamonds show off the stone better than others) and carat weight (the bigger, the better).

When you start shopping for a diamond engagement ring, always prioritize the cut, which plays the largest role in the diamond's beauty (taking the time to clean your diamond ring at least every six months or so plays a role in maintaining said beauty). Finding the Right Band-rings for You

If you’re shopping for antique and vintage band rings, you likely know that this particular kind of ring is among the most versatile in jewelry.

You don’t need a special occasion to dazzle friends with a flashy sapphire band ring or to make a statement with a wide band ring — this accessory knows no boundaries, and many different iterations have materialized over the years. Whether you’re seeking an unadorned modern sterling-silver band ring for everyday wear or dual gold wedding bands for the big day, there are lots of options waiting for you.

On 1stDibs, there are enduring antique wedding bands to be found dating from the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Jewelers who were active during the reign of Queen Victoria — specifically, the Romantic period — designed rings with large colorful gemstones and decorative motifs, while the jewelry of the latter era was all about the exquisite diamond, platinum and pearl creations made by such famous names as Cartier and Boucheron. Matching wedding bands, which may reduce the stress of wedding-band shopping if you prefer a traditional route, afford you and your partner the chance to have the engagement ring and wedding bands in the same metal and design.

And because band rings aren’t necessarily relegated to black-tie events, they’ve come a long way, design-wise. David Yurman’s band rings, for example, are well known for their integration of mixed metals, and the celebrated jewelry designer’s powerful silver and gold bracelets, rings, pendants and earrings frequently express his iconic industrial-cable motif.

A simple and chic band ring goes with anything, from the evening gown you’ve chosen for a weekend gala to the jeans and vintage tee you’ve thrown on for a casual lunch with colleagues. Browse a distinctive collection of contemporary and vintage diamond band rings, gold band rings and other accessories on 1stDibs today.

Questions About Second Wedding Band
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023
Yes, a wedding band can have gemstones. In fact, many men and women choose rings set with gemstones as their wedding jewelry. Some gemstones commonly used in wedding bands include diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, rubies and amethysts. Any type of ring can be used as a wedding band if it appeals to you. Shop a wide range of gemstone wedding bands on 1stDibs.

Whether you can contour a wedding band after it's purchased depends on its design and materials. With softer metals and the right style, it may be possible for a jeweler to contour the ring, but it won't be possible to reshape many bands. However, you can purchase specially contoured wedding bands intended to fit the curves of engagement rings. Find a diverse assortment of contour wedding bands on 1sDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 8, 2023
Yes, you can have a sapphire wedding band. You're free to wear any ring that you like as a wedding band. Yes, a woman can just wear a wedding band, whether for personal preference, comfort or style. In some cases, a woman may choose not to receive or wear an engagement ring. Others may stop wearing an engagement ring after their wedding day. There are no rules regarding wedding jewelry, so do what feels best for you. On 1stDibs, explore a diverse assortment of wedding bands.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023
There is no standard when it comes to how many carats a wedding band should be. To achieve a unified look, choose a wedding band that balances the proportions of your engagement ring. Experts typically recommend a 2:1 ratio for engagement ring and wedding band carats. For example, if you have a 1-carat engagement ring, a wedding band with a total weight of 0.5 carats would be a good match. On 1stDibs, explore a wide variety of wedding bands.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 5, 2023
No, the wedding band is not usually the engagement ring. A band is a ring that is a continuous metal circle. Typically, couples exchange wedding bands during their wedding ceremony. An engagement ring is a piece worn to celebrate a promise to marry, and brides typically continue to wear it above their wedding bands. On 1stDibs, shop a selection of wedding jewelry from some of the world’s top sellers.

What a pink wedding band means is open to interpretation. During the Elizabethan era, pink gemstones were synonymous with happiness and delight. Today, some people associate them with love and innocence. A person may also choose to wear a pink wedding band simply because they like its appearance. A channel set wedding band has the stones set between two walls of metal. There are no prongs between the stones, so the stones are nestled alongside one another. Shop a range of antique and vintage channel set wedding bands on 1stDibs.

Whether a ring wrap can be a wedding band depends largely on its style. Generally, ring wraps work best when placed beside another ring due to their shape and the placement of their stones. As a result, most may look incomplete when worn alone. However, some round double-band ring wraps may be suitable for use as standalone wedding rings. On 1stDibs, find a large selection of wedding bands.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023
Whether you need a contoured wedding band depends on what your engagement ring looks like and your personal preference. Generally, people pair contoured wedding bands with engagement rings that feature curved gemstone cuts, such as the round brilliant cut, the oval cut and the pear cut. It's less common to choose contoured rings to wear with angled cut styles like the marquise, or squared-off princess and emerald cuts. Explore a selection of contoured wedding bands on 1stDibs.

What a diamond wedding band means is largely up to the interpretation of the person who wears it. Due to their hardness, diamonds are often associated with longevity; on a wedding band, they convey a meaning of eternal love. Some see diamonds as representing marriage itself due to the long history of brides-to-be receiving diamond engagement rings. On 1stDibs, explore a wide range of diamond wedding bands.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 23, 2024
Yes, it is okay to have diamonds on a wedding band. In fact, many men and women choose wedding rings featuring diamonds. There are pieces with just one diamond as well as ones that flaunt multiple diamonds. You can also find eternity bands that have diamonds all the way around their surfaces. There are no rules about whether or not a woman's wedding band should have diamonds. Many wedding bands feature solitaire diamonds, rows of diamonds or diamonds that run all the way along their surfaces. However, women can also choose wedding bands that feature a different type of gemstone or none at all. Any ring that appeals to you can serve as your wedding band. What a white sapphire represents in a wedding band is up to personal interpretation. Some people believe that a white sapphire wedding band represents chastity and purity due to the color of the gemstone. Because white sapphires were once a talisman used to ward off evil spirits in India, they can also be symbols of good luck in a marriage. On 1stDibs, shop a selection of white sapphire wedding rings.

Russian wedding rings have three wedding bands due to religious traditions. In the Russian Orthodox Church, three rings represent the Holy Trinity. In more recent years, the triple ring has also taken on a secular meaning with many people now associating the bands with the past, present and future of a married couple. On 1stDibs, shop a variety of wedding bands.
  • 1stDibs ExpertDecember 12, 2023
Yes, men can wear diamond wedding bands. Many types of men's wedding bands feature the gemstone. Men can consider pieces with just one diamond or a row of several diamonds. • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023
Whether men like wedding bands with diamonds is a matter of personal taste. Some men prefer the more minimalist look of a domed or flat wedding band free of gemstones. Others may prefer diamond-set wedding rings, such as a solitaire diamond, a diamond offset by smaller accent stones or an eternity band that has diamonds all the way around its edge. Explore a collection of men's diamond wedding bands on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 27, 2023
There is no rule for how many carats a men's wedding band should be. You're free to choose a wedding band with a large focal gemstone or one that is set with smaller gemstones. What a white gold wedding band means is open to interpretation. However, many people simply equate the rings with the promise to remain married to someone for the rest of their lives. While the circle shape has always symbolized an unending pledge of love to one's partner, preferred materials in the production of wedding bands have changed over time (white gold and yellow gold are among the most popular metals). Some people associate white gold with purity and innocence due to its color. Shop a diverse assortment of white gold wedding bands on 1stDibs.

What a black wedding band means on a man is up to individual interpretation. To some, black-finished precious metals and gemstones symbolize power and strength. Others associate them with eternal love. Men may also choose black wedding bands simply because they like their appearance and do not assign a deeper meaning to them.
