Michel Ducaroy for sale on 1stDibs

The Togo sofa isn’t the only piece of furniture Michel Ducaroy designed, but it is certainly the one that he will be long remembered for. The cozy, crumpled pillow-like sofa seems never to go out of style, and its features encapsulate Ducaroy’s design philosophy of combining ergonomics and comfort with high-tech synthetic materials like foam, quilting and thermoformed plastics.

Ducaroy was born into a family of French furniture manufacturers who specialized in residential interiors as well as fittings for ocean liners. However, he elected to study sculpture at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, and this foundation would greatly influence his work and the way he thought about shape and form. Ducaroy worked at the family business and later founded his design studio in 1952.

In 1954, Ducaroy began working with Ligne Roset, the French family-run manufacturing giant known across the world for creating high-end seating. There, he was able to propel the research and development of their designs, and his work quickly became integral to the company’s identity.

Ducaroy’s innovations with thermoformed plastics and biomorphic forms can be seen in early designs for Ligne Roset in the ’60s and ’70s, like the cozy, modular Adria chair and low-sitting Kashima sofa. He designed the Togo furniture line in 1973 using an innovative all-foam seating structure that was covered with polyester; decades later the Togo sofa remains a Ligne Roset best seller.

The low rise and unique curve of any Ducaroy sofa make it instantly recognizable, and the distinctly Pop art–inspired, organic forms that the celebrated designer created from synthetic materials like polyester and foam made a powerful statement at their inception, as they continue to do now.

Find a collection of new and vintage Michel Ducaroy sofas, lounge chairs and other furniture on 1stDibs.

Finding the Right Seating for You

With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.

Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.

Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.

The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.

Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.

With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.

Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.

No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.

Questions About Togo Sofas
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Togo sofas are the first in the world to be made entirely of polyurethane foam. The couch has no frame and the structure is defined by polyester and polyurethane foam, giving the consumer three different densities from which to choose. Soft polyester padding covers the polyurethane, ensuring a soft finish. Shop a collection of Togo sofas from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
The French furniture company Ligne Roset makes Togo sofas as of December 2021. Michel Ducaroy designed the armless sofa that can be easily identified by its simple, clean lines and slouchy, plush appearance. Find a collection of Togo sofas on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 20, 2024
To tell if your Togo sofa is real, first take a close look at the folds that cover the foam core. On a genuine piece, you will see generous amounts of fabric, while replicas usually employ smaller amounts, resulting in less pronounced pleats. Next, look under the sofa. A real Togo will have blue and white fabric, and some counterfeiters miss this key detail. The buttons are also a helpful identifying characteristic. Authentic Togo sofas feature small, flat buttons. They'll be clad in the same upholstery material as the sofa and attached with just two stitches. Lastly, compare the label on the back of the sofa to images found on trusted online resources. If you still have doubts about the authenticity of your piece, consult a certified appraiser or other knowledgeable expert. Find a diverse assortment of Ligne Roset Togo sofas on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
A Togo sofa is a piece of furniture designed by Michel Ducaroy. The sofa features an ergonomic design with a simple square back, a plush seat and open arm-less sides. Upholstery shows off pleats or button tufting. Shop a range of Togo sofas on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 21, 2024
Whether a Togo sofa is comfortable is a matter of personal preference. However, Michel Ducaroy did intend for the iconic sofa to have a luxurious feel. He included an assemblage of foam in different densities beneath the upholstery to provide firm support for the body, and the slouchy shape of the sofa is meant to invite the sitter to settle in and relax. Shop a variety of Togo sofas on 1stDibs.
