Our collection of these items for sale includes 156 vintage editions and 17 modern creations to choose from as well. There have been many well-made iterations of the classic vintage turquoise ring over the years, but those made by Van Cleef Arpels, Cartier and Chaumet are often thought to be among the most beautiful. A round cut version of this piece has appeal, but there are also cabochon and oval cut versions for sale. There aren’t many items for men if you’re seeking a vintage turquoise ring, as most of the options available are for women and unisex.

How Much is a Vintage Turquoise Ring?

Prices for a vintage turquoise ring can differ depending upon size, time period and other attributes — at 1stDibs, these accessories begin at $175 and can go as high as $35,857, while this accessory, on average, fetches $1,300.

The Legacy of Turquoise in Jewelry Design

The thought of vintage and antique turquoise jewelry often conjures up images of striking Navajo bracelets and necklaces worn with a denim shirt and cowboy boots. This all-American look has been celebrated by fashion designers like Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger on their runways and in ad campaigns. In the October 2016 issue of Vogue magazine, Tom Ford said he only wears turquoise jewelry at his Santa Fe ranch. So what is it about this gorgeous blue-green stone that makes us wish that we were born in December?

It’s not surprising that turquoise is abundant in New Mexico and Arizona because, according to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), it needs to be in “dry and barren regions where acidic, copper-rich groundwater seeps downward and reacts with minerals that contain phosphorus and aluminum.

Turquoise is not found in a single crystal but is a combination of microcrystals. Its appearance, waxy and opaque, is attributed to its structure and composition. “It’s an aggregate of microscopic crystals that form a solid mass. If the crystals are packed closely together, the material is less porous, so it has a finer texture. Fine-textured turquoise has an attractive, waxy luster when it’s polished. Turquoise with a less-dense crystal structure has higher porosity and coarser texture, resulting in a dull luster when it’s polished,” notes the GIA. Since no one wants to set a dull piece of turquoise, porous turquoise is often treated to make the stone more attractive.

In the United States, there have been discoveries of turquoise from 200 B.C. It is not just loose turquoise stones that have been found, but entire suites of jewelry from prehistoric times. In the late 19th-century, the Navajo Indians, who learned silversmithing from the Spanish, started to make beads out of turquoise and eventually combined it with silver around the 1880s. Initially this jewelry was for ceremonial purposes, but it became fashionable once the tourism in the Southwest picked up in the beginning of the 20th century.

Finding the Right Rings for You

Antique and vintage rings have long held a special place in the hearts of fine jewelry lovers all over the world.

No matter their origin or specific characteristics, rings are timeless, versatile accessories. They’ve carried deep meaning since at least the Middle Ages, when diamond rings symbolized strength and other kinds of rings were worn to signify romantic feelings or to denote an affiliation with a religious order. Rings have also forever been emblematic of eternity.

Over time, rings have frequently taken the form of serpents, which have long been associated with eternal life, health and renewal. Italian luxury jewelry house Bulgari has become famous for its widely loved Serpenti motif, for example, and its Serpenti ring, like the other accessories in the collection, began as an homage to jewelry of the Roman and Hellenistic eras. The serpent is now a popular motif in fine jewelry. Jewelry devotees have long pined for rings adorned with reptiles, thanks to antique Victorian rings — well, specifically, Queen Victoria’s illustrious engagement ring, which took the form of a gold snake set with rubies, diamonds and an emerald (her birthstone). Designs for Victorian-era engagement rings often featured repoussé work and chasing, in which patterns are hammered into the metal.

Engagement rings, which are reliably intimidating to shop for, are still widely recognized as symbols of love and commitment. On 1stDibs, a range of buying guides can be found for those in the market for antique engagement ringsvintage engagement rings or Art Deco engagement rings

The most collectible antique engagement rings and vintage engagement rings are those from the Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco eras. Named for the monarchies of the four King Georges, who in succession ruled England starting in 1714 (plus King William’s reign), antique Georgian rings, be they engagement rings or otherwise, are also coveted by collectors. Pearls, along with colored gemstones like garnets, rubies and sapphires, were widely used in Georgian jewelry. The late-1700s paste jewelry was a predecessor to what we now call fashion or costume jewelry

The Art Nouveau movement (1880–1910) brought with it rings inspired by the natural world. Antique Art Nouveau rings might feature depictions of winged insects and fauna as well as women, who were simultaneously eroticized and romanticized, frequently with long flowing hair. Art Deco jewelry, on the other hand, which originated during the 1920s and ’30s, is by and large “white jewelry.” White metals, primarily platinum, were favored over yellow gold in the design of antique Art Deco rings and other accessories as well as geometric motifs, with women drawn to the era’s dazzling cocktail rings in particular.

Whether you’re hunting down a chunky classic for a Prohibition-themed cocktail party or seeking a clean contemporary design to complement your casual ensemble, find an exquisite collection of antique, new and vintage rings on 1stDibs.

Questions About Vintage Turquoise Ring
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
No, you should avoid getting your turquoise ring wet. Turquoise is porous so water, especially warm water, could potentially cause damage and alter the color of your stone. Shop a collection of expertly vetted gems from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 8, 2023
There are a few reasons why you might want to buy vintage rings. One is that most vintage rings were handmade, making them high-quality and one-of-a-kind pieces. Another is that many vintage rings have timeless looks that are visually appealing. Plus, some vintage rings are desirable to collectors, so their value may increase over time. On 1stDibs, shop a range of vintage rings from some of the world's top dealers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertDecember 4, 2023
What vintage rings are called varies. It's correct to simply call any ring that is 20 to 99 years old a vintage ring. However, some people may call them by other names. Rings from the 1940s may be referred to as War Year rings, while mid-century and retro are other terms for pieces from the 1950s and ’60s. You may also see vintage rings described by their styles. For example, a ring flaunting a single diamond or colored gemstone is a solitaire, while one showcasing a primary stone surrounded by a ring of smaller accent stones is a halo ring. On 1stDibs, shop a diverse assortment of vintage rings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 17, 2021

  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 21, 2023

Some pieces also featured gemstones like diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds as well as turquoise, jade and other materials like pearls and crystals. Shop a variety of vintage rings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023
Vintage-style rings are rings that draw inspiration from jewelry created 20 or more years ago. For example, a vintage-style ring may feature two-tone metalwork and an oval setting, which were attributes of jewelry designed during the Retro period, or the ornate geometric details and step-cut diamonds that are associated with the Art Deco era. Yes, vintage engagement rings are popular among some people. Many find the details of rings produced during the last 20 to 99 years to be visually appealing. In fact, some contemporary jewelry makers even draw inspiration from vintage designs. Some people also prefer vintage rings because they inherit them from relatives or because they like the idea of wearing an engagement ring that has a history. On 1stDibs, find a diverse assortment of vintage engagement rings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2023
A vintage-style engagement ring is a piece of bridal jewelry designed in the style of rings produced in the past. Many vintage-style engagement rings borrow elements from Victorian, Art Deco or Edwardian jewelry. Although the rings may closely resemble authentic antique or vintage rings, they are actually contemporary pieces produced in recent years. On 1stDibs, find an assortment of antique, vintage and contemporary engagement rings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 17, 2023
To tell if a vintage ring is real, examine its details. Older pieces are usually handmade, so they’ll often lack perfect symmetry or feature minor flaws in the details. Does it show signs of wear and tear that normally wouldn’t appear on a new accessory? Stamps and/or markings inside the band may indicate the content of the metal as well as the manufacturer. You can consult online resources to see if the stylistic characteristics match jewelry from the era during which you believe the ring originated. Certified appraisers or seasoned professionals within the jewelry industry can also help you determine the age of a piece. If you wish to know if a vintage ring’s gemstone is real, consult an experienced gemologist. Shop a range of jewelry on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023
Vintage mood rings work because of their unique stones. Rather than being set with a precious gemstone, mood rings feature thermoplastic liquid crystals layered under a protective coating that is sensitive to temperature changes. When your body temperature rises and falls, the shift causes the crystals to react and show off different colors. On 1stDibs, shop a wide range of vintage rings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 23, 2024
There are several reasons why people buy vintage engagement rings. Some prefer the way jewelry looked in decades past and select vintage pieces that fit their tastes. Others choose vintage engagement rings to get a unique, one-of-a-kind piece or like the idea of their jewelry having a long history. On 1stDibs, shop a diverse assortment of vintage engagement rings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023
The difference between vintage and classic engagement rings has to do with taste and time. Vintage engagement rings date back 20 to 80 years and occupy the sweet spot between historic and modern. Whether or not an engagement ring is "classic" may pertain solely to the style of the ring. The solitaire setting is considered a classic setting for engagement rings. Tiffany Co. broadly helped put diamonds on the map in 1886 by introducing the American marketplace to the solitaire diamond design, which is still the quintessential engagement ring style. Designed to maximize a diamond's sparkle, the trademark Tiffany Setting elevated the stone on six prongs (in contrast to the bezel setting, which was common at the time). In the late 1800s, Cartier sought to render the diamonds in their engagement rings and other rings as brilliantly as possible, and the house's Solitaire 1895 engagement ring is considered a classic engagement ring.
