Finding the Right Dining-room-chairs for You
No matter what your dream dining experience looks like, there is a wide-ranging variety of vintage, new and antique dining room chairs on 1stDibs. Find upholstered dining room chairs, wood dining room chairs and more to outfit any space designated for a good meal, be it in your home or in the great outdoors.
In the early 18th century, most dining room tables and other furniture was designed to look masculine. In America, dining rooms weren’t even much of a concept until the late 1700s, when a space set aside specifically for dining became a part of the construction of homes for the wealthy. Dining room chairs of the era were likely made of walnut or oak. In Europe, neoclassical dining chairs emerged during the 1750s owing to nostalgia for classical antiquity, while the curving chair crests of Queen Anne furniture in the United States preceded the artistically bold seat backs that characterized the Chippendale chairs that followed. If there weren't enough dining chairs at suppertime in the American colonies, men were prioritized and women stood.
In the dining rooms of today, however, there is enough space for everyone to have a seat at the table. Modern styles introduce innovative design choices that play with shape and style. Icons of mid-century modern dining room chairs are plentiful: With its distinctive bentwood back, there is the DCW dining chair by Charles and Ray Eames, while Hans Wegner's timeless classic, the Wishbone chair, remains relevant and elegant decades after its debut. Stefano Giovannoni's White Rabbit dining chairs, in their lovable polyethylene biomorphism, reinvent what dining can look like.
Today's wide range of dining room chairs also means that they can now be styled in different ways, bringing functionality and fun to any sumptuous dining space. No longer do tables have to be accompanied by a matching set of seats. Skillfully mixing and matching colors and designs allows you to showcase your personality without sacrificing the cohesion of a given space.
By furnishing your dining room with cozy chairs — vintage, antique or otherwise — family time can extend far beyond mealtime. The plush upholstery of Victorian-style dining room chairs is perfect for game nights that stretch from dinner to midnight snack. Outdoor tables and dining chairs can also present an excellent opportunity for bonding and eating — what goes better with a delicious meal than fresh air, anyway?
Whether you prefer your chairs streamlined and stackable or ornate and one of a kind, the offerings on 1stDibs will elevate your mealtime and beyond.
- 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023The best cushion for sitting on over a period of many hours is largely a matter of personal preference. Thickness, style and the type of filling all affect how much support a cushion provides. For work-from-home situations, you’ll want to consider comfort and ergonomic support. Herman Miller’s Aeron is a best seller for sitting in front of the computer all day. What makes it stand out among its many imitators is its high quality and fully customizable seat height and depth, arms and recline. Find a range of comfortable seating on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 3, 2023Which office chair has the best cushion is largely a matter of personal preference. Some people prefer chairs with thicker cushions or like one type of filling material more than another. On 1stDibs, find a collection of office chairs.
- Do Wishbone chairs get dirty?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertJune 30, 2023Yes, Wishbone chairs can get dirty if they are not properly maintained. Any seat in your home may get dusty or be vulnerable to staining if you spill something on it. Despite the intricate process behind Hans Wegner’s iconic chair — the Wishbone requires 100 steps to complete — the seat, in its final form, boasts a graceful simplicity. This is largely thanks to its namesake Y-shaped back, a simple support structure that allows for the back and armrest to function as a single piece and dispenses with the need for multiple back slats, lending the chair an effect of weightlessness. You can keep a Wishbone chair clean by wiping it regularly with a damp cloth. Be careful when cleaning its woven paper-cord seat, however, as this component takes manufacturer Carl Hansen’s craftsmen over an hour to make. On 1stDibs, shop a selection of Wishbone chairs.
- 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 21, 2024To tell if a Wishbone chair is real, closely examine its construction. A genuine chair will usually have a one-piece back and armrest unit with no visible seams, and the legs should be smooth with an equal, regularly shaped taper. In addition, the seat will typically have a very tight paper weave. Genuine Wishbone chairs often have a label with the Carl Hansen logo and Hans Wegner's signature hidden under their seats. However, these labels can come loose and may be missing, even on real Wishbone chairs. If you're unsure about the authenticity of your piece, consult a certified appraiser or experienced antiques dealer. Find a variety of Wishbone chairs on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022In 1949, Hans Wegner made the original Wishbone chair, a bentwood piece with a curved rail and Y-back. Today, Carl Hansen Søn manufactures the chair based on Wegner's original design. You can find a variety of Hans Wegner chairs on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 23, 2024To identify an original Wishbone chair, first look at the backrest. Originals feature bentwood frames, so the backrest will be a single piece of wood. Most later reproductions are composed of two or three pieces of wood and will display noticeable seams. Next, look at the seat. Authentic originals will have perfect 90-degree angles at all four corners and many lines in the center with a tight weave. Imperfect corners, a few central lines and loose weaving are all signs of a reproduction. Finally, measure the distance between the bottom of the Y on the backrest and the seat. On originals, the distance is 10 millimeters. Any variations will usually indicate that a chair is a reproduction. When in doubt, consult a certified appraiser or knowledgeable antique dealer. Shop a variety of Hans J. Wegner Wishbone chairs on 1stDibs.
