Adolfo Hohenstein Art
German, 1854-1928
Adolfo Hohenstein (1854–1928) was a German-born artist and designer who became one of the most influential figures in the history of Italian poster art. Born in Saint Petersburg and raised in Vienna, he trained in the decorative arts before traveling extensively through Europe and Asia, where he developed an eye for refined ornament and theatrical presentation.
In 1879, Hohenstein settled in Milan, where his career flourished. He became a set and costume designer for the Teatro alla Scala and other prominent theaters, later joining the famed Officine Grafiche Ricordi as art director. There, he created some of the most celebrated opera posters of the late 19th century, including designs for La Bohème and Tosca, as well as striking advertisements for brands such as Campari and leading newspapers. His distinctive blend of elegance, fluid lines, and decorative detail placed him at the forefront of Stile Liberty, the Italian interpretation of Art Nouveau.
Hohenstein’s style combined theatrical flair with a mastery of composition, creating imagery that was both visually captivating and commercially effective. His work influenced a new generation of poster artists, setting a standard for modern graphic design in Italy.
In the early 20th century, he returned to Germany, living in Düsseldorf and later in Bonn, where he turned his attention to painting, architectural decoration, and interior design. He continued to produce refined works until his death in 1928, leaving a lasting legacy as the “father of Italian poster art” and a pioneer of modern visual communication.to

"Quinquina Dubonnet"
Original lithograph from “Les Maitres de L’Affiche” series
Printed by Imprimerie Chaix, Paris
Bearing MDL stamp lower right, from issue #28, 1898. Plate #109
Unframed Size: 11 3/8 x 15 3/4”
The “Les Maitres de l’Affiche” series was offered as a subscription series to collectors every month for 60 months, from December 1895 through November 1900. The “Maitres de l’Affiche,” were issued as separate numbered sheets, referred to as “plates”. They were numbered, with the printers name “Imprimerie Chaix,” in the margin at the bottom left hand corner, “PL.1” to “PL.240.” In the margin at the bottom right hand corner of each, is a blind
embossed stamp from a design of Cheret’s. The smaller format and the fact the “Maitres” were a paid subscription series, allowed Imprimerie Chaix to use the latest state of the art printing techniques, not normally used in the large format posters due to cost. A very high quality of paper was used, where as the large format posters were printed on lesser quality newsprint, due to cost and a short expected life span. This explains why the quality of the printing, in the “Maitres de l’Affiche,” usually far exceeds that of their larger counterparts.
“The Dubonnet poster...

La Dame aux Camelias - Sarah Bernhardt (after) Alphonse Mucha, 1969

These beautiful and colorful lithographic posters were hand reproduced by the Mourlot Studio's Master Printer Henri Deschamps in 1969. They are not to be mistaken with later cheap digital and giclée reproductions. Ed. 1,500
In December of 1894, Mucha visited a print shop contracted to create a new advertising poster for a play featuring Sarah Bernhardt, the most famous actress in Paris at the time. Mucha volunteered to produce a lithographic poster within two weeks, and on January 1, 1895, the advertisement for the play Gismonda by Victorien Sardou was posted in the city, where it attracted much attention. Bernhardt was so satisfied with the success of this first poster that she signed a six-year contract with the artist.
Written by Alexandre Dumas (son) when he was 23 years old, and first published in 1848, "La Dame aux Camélias...
