Al Loving Abstract Drawings and Watercolors

American, 1935-2005

An innovative artist of abstraction who found inspiration in the hard-edge style of Minimalism as well as in the free-form creation of traditional quilt making, Al Loving was the first African American to have a solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Loving was inspired to pursue art at an early age, captivated by the work of his father who had studied art and made his living as a sign painter and the quilting done by his mother and grandmother. He earned a BFA from the University of Illinois and an MFA from the University of Michigan.

Loving moved to New York in 1968, where his art, with its striking hexagonal and cubic shapes conveying a sense of spatial illusion, soon caught the attention of the art world. Just a year later, the Whitney Museum opened its exhibition of his paintings featuring geometric forms influenced by Abstract Expressionists like Hans Hofmann, who had taught Al Mullen, Loving's mentor in Michigan.

By the 1970s, Loving shifted to a new approach, experimenting with torn canvas and collage for kaleidoscopic patterns. Spiraling motifs laced over the layers of color, which the artist had joined together through strips of cardboard and canvas, blurring the line between painting and sculpture. In 1974, critic Peter Schjeldahl wrote in the New York Times that Loving’s pieces “energize the space around them” and appear to be “caught in the act of moving across the wall.”

Loving explained that he used abstraction “to speak directly to the art” and examine the changes in painting sparked by modernism, where “passion and feelings became real. The subject matter became less important than the art itself.” Loving was a longtime educator, and his legacy extends to the students he taught at the City College of New York from 1988 to 1996. He exhibited widely in his lifetime, with solo shows at the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Neuberger Museum of Art. His work is also in the collections of leading museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney and the National Gallery of Art.

This artwork "Untitled" 1998 is in an original pastel on paper by noted American artist Pia Stern, b. 1953. It is hand signed and dated in pencil by the artist. The artwork size is 16 x 8 inches, framed size is 26.25 x 17.5 inches. Custom framed in a wooden silver frame, with off white matting and bevel. It is in excellent condition. The frame is in fair condition. It has some small scratches Please see pictures. About the artist: Pia Stern spent her junior year abroad in Aix-en-Provence, the town in the south of France where Paul Cézanne lived and worked. There she took her first painting course and felt instantly at home with her instructors’ philosophical and visual perceptions of the world. Returning to UC Berkeley as a senior, she enrolled in the art program and was greatly influenced by several artists who were integral to the Bay Area Figurative Movement including Richard Diebenkorn, David Park, Joan Brown and most notably, Elmer Bischoff, with whom she worked very closely. Stern is primarily a process painter, and is known for her exploration of symbolic language. As stated by noted author and art critic Sister Wendy Beckett in "Contemporary Women Artists:" “Pia Stern…has an unusual power of transforming her ‘dreams’ into our own…The artist seeks out the great secrets of the heart and bodies them forth.” Using oil paints and drawing materials in an intuitive manner, she rarely approaches her work with a preconceived idea. She may put down a quick gestural stroke, a dab of color or a general shape, yet this is just a starting point for her. Like an archeologist, she approaches the canvas as if on a ‘dig’, adding and subtracting, waiting for the meaning of the piece to reveal itself through the mark making process. Her work is held in galleries, museums, public and private collections nationwide, and has been critically acclaimed in newspapers, books and journal reviews. She has a studio in Little Italy in San Diego, and her work is currently represented in San Francisco at the SFMOMA Artists Gallery and The Elins Eagles-Smith Gallery, and in Honolulu by Fine Arts Associates. Untitled #2 - Emmanuelle Messika, 21st Century, Abstract drawing
By Emmanuelle Messika
Located in Paris, FR
Coloured inks and pastel on paper Signed Gestural abstraction Outsider art Artist’s statement : "Painting, for me, is an expressive endeavor in which one depicts the evolution of the various facets of the artistic self. There is, on each canvas, a tension where violence and stillness naturally coexist. By playing with different materials, I seek to establish a sort of unexpected dialogue between these states, and aspire to express this tension through profusion of color. The canvas is the stage that allows me to unite narration with the action of painting the fantastic—even the outrageous---and the everyday. I develop scenarios borrowed from the imagination, which join fantasy, even fables, with the everyday. Pulling threads from each domain, I bring together the mythical and the quotidian, so that the worlds of reality and fantasy merge. I rely on “creatures,” improbable little characters that could exist in some other realm or dimension. They materialize, issuing forth from the surprising, unbelievable and wondrous world of childhood. Human or animal, both find themselves entangled in inextricable and melancholic situations. These inextricable situations create distance; the humor comes through this breach. It is the absurdity of their predicaments that manifests the humor in the work. In each of my paintings, the sentiments are heightened by an intentional, provocative tone that transforms the work. An Otherness is attributed to objects; objects become personified, and by their very presence, they become witnesses or guinea pigs torn between and bound to their dilemma. The titles of my paintings, whether invented or quotations taken out of context, come from literature, theater, or song lyrics. Accident and chance are often major actors in my work.” Emmanuelle Messika BIOGRAPHY : Emmanuelle Messika was born in France in 1979. She works and lives in Paris.
