Albert Decaris Figurative Prints
French, 1901-1952
Albert Decaris was the best and most notorious French engraver of the 20th century, with a strange mix of classicism and audacity. Decaris created a major oeuvre of original engravings and etchings, both as individual plates and as illustrations for Livres d’artistes (art books). In the 1930s, Decaris began carving postal stamps, resulting in more than 500 such vignettes. At the same time, Decaris was preparing large plates, mostly for his pleasure, on a wide variety of subjects: careful (almost technical) representations of monuments and places of interest, scenes of history, real-life or imaginary; scenes of mythology or imagination, verging on surrealism and mere caricatures, with a sense of humor.

This beautiful print, representing the zodiacal sign of Aquarius with a very synthetic line, is in very good condition, except for some usual yellowing of the margin. Including a white cardboard passepartout, cm 31.8 x 24.6.
Albert Decaris (1901 – 1988)
Albert Decaris was a French artist, engraver, painter. At age 19, Decaris won the Concours de Rome, which was seen as the first award among young French artists at the time. Moreover he was elected Fellow of The French Académie des Beaux Arts in 1943. Decaris was the best and most notorious French engravers of the 20th century, with a strange mix of classicism and audacity. The street artist and photographer JR started out his artist practice in the streets of Paris. Using the pseudonym JR, the artist is keeping his identity hidden from the public.
As part of the "Jusqu'ici tout va bien", an exhibition by students from the Kourtrajmé school that JR is in charge of the art section of the school, JR created a pasting on the facade of the Palais de Tokyo, in Paris, through an anamorphic image.
The collage was visible from August until September 2020, between the buildings of Clichy-Montfermeil and the Eiffel Tower, whose shadow is outlined on the visual in anamorphosis.
What is very characteristic of JR’s art is the impermanence nature of the project, which the only way that the installation is captured, is through the creation of this lithograph - commemorating its presence, as the sun dries the glue, and the wind and rain tears the fragile paper with every moment.
