Aldro Thompson Hibbard Art

American, 1886-1972
Born in Falmouth, Massachusetts, Aldro Hibbard was an Impressionist landscape painter much concerned with light and shadow. He was one of the founders of the Rockport Art Colony, and the Rockport Art Association now occupies his former studio. Hibbard grew up in Dorchester and Boston and spent much time in the summers in Boston and Cape Cod. He showed early artistic talent, an interest he shared with a life-long love of baseball, which led to his becoming a professional baseball player. For his art training, he graduated from the Massachusetts Normal School and studied at the Boston Museum School with Edmund Tarbell, Joseph DeCamp, and Frank Benson. In Boston from 1927 to 1929, he occupied Fenway Studios. Hibbard won the Paige Traveling Scholarship to study abroad, though his travels were cut short by War Word I , and he returned to America in 1914. In the early 1920s, he became a summer resident of Cape Ann and wintered in Jamaica, Vermont in the West River Valley. There he painted many rural snowscenes including oxen pulling wagons, covered bridges, and sugar houses . Much of his large body of work, concerned with light and shadow, depicts Vermont landscape, New England coastlines, and the Canadian Rockies. From 1915, he was also an instructor in the Art Department of Boston University.

"View of Arizona Desert near Wickenberg" Will Foote, Impressionist Western Scene
Located in New York, NY
Will Foote View of Arizona Desert near Wickenberg, circa 1927 Signed lower center; titled and dated on the reverse Oil on artist's board 12 x 16 inches Foote was born on June 29, 1874 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and died on January 27, 1965, in Sarasota, Florida. He was in Old Lyme, 1901-65; and in Cos Cob, 1903. Will Howe Foote was one of the earliest artists at Old Lyme and one who adopted the town as home. He first went there the summer of 1901 with his uncle, William H. Howe, a painter of cattle, who had been told about the beauties of the countryside by Henry Ward Ranger. Foote had himself heard of Old Lyme when he had met Clark Voorhees in France. He and his uncle were both from Grand Rapids, Michigan, where Foote's father was an executive in the furniture industry that made the city famous. Encouraged to be an artist by his father, he began his professional training at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1894. He became friends there with a fellow Michigan student, Frederick Frieseke, who would study with him again at the Art Students League in New York, where Foote worked in 1895-96 under H. Siddons Mowbray and Kenyon Cox. In 1897 he and Frieseke went to the Academic Julian in Paris, where Foote studied under Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant. He was at Julian's until 1900, except for an Italian trip, summers at Laren, Holland, or Etaples, France, and a short period at Whistler's school in Paris. He exhibited twice at the Old Salon, and when he returned to the United States in 1900, he had a one-man exhibition in his hometown. Will Howe Foote's paintings were well received on his return from abroad. He exhibited frequently at the National Academy of Design and became an associate member in 1910. His awards included a bronze medal at the St. Louis Exposition in 1904 and a silver medal at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. Once he visited Old Lyme, Foote returned every summer. In 1902 he was hired as assistant to Frank DuMond at the Lyme Summer School of Art, which was sponsored by the Art Students League of New York. Sometime in 1903 he also taught a session in Cos Cob. After 1906, when the League moved its Lyme classes to Woodstock, New York, Foote continued in Old Lyme as a private instructor. In 1907 he was married to Helen Kirtland Freeman, whom he had met a year or two earlier when she had come to the Lyme art colony as a student of Henry Rankin Poore. Fellow artist William Chadwick was best man at the wedding. The Footes began building a house on Sill Lane in Old Lyme and upon its completion in 1909 spent every spring, summer and fall there, where Foote devoted full time to painting. The Gregory Smiths, old friends from Grand Rapids, arrived in Old Lyme in 1910 and became neighbors. Foote's early works in Connecticut, such as A Summer's Night reflect the artist's interest in soft, atmospheric scenes dominated by a single, overriding tone. The arrival of Childe Hassam and Walter Griffin...

Vermont Farm in Winter, Aldro Hibbard, New England Impressionist Snow Landscape
By Aldro Thompson Hibbard
Located in New York, NY
Aldro Thompson Hibbard (1886 - 1972) Vermont Farm in Winter Oil on canvas 24 x 30 inches Signed lower left Provenance: Private Collection, Newburyport, Massachusetts Shannon's, Fine Art Auction, September 17, 2020, Lot 198 A product of two Capes, born on Cape Cod and matured as an artist on Cape Ann, Aldro Hibbard became the spiritual center of this artists’ community. Hibbard was the consummate outdoorsman, capturing the deep frigid snows of Vermont or maintaining a .300-plus batting average in the North Shore baseball leagues. Like George Bellows, Hibbard had to choose between professional baseball and art. He attended the school at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where he was instructed by Frank Weston Benson, Phillip Leslie Hale and Edmund Charles Tarbell, who were instructors in the new school of American Impressionism at that time. Hibbard rejected the confines of his studio, despite the observation by his teacher Joseph DeCamp, the great impressionist Boston School portrait painter, that the young student made figure painting “look too easy.” In later years, writers referred to Hibbard as “the dean of the Frozen River School” and the artist soon to replace Gardner Symons and Edward Redfield as the leading interpreter of winter. He traveled to Europe in 1914 and was friendly with the great Joachim Sorolla in Spain, where they agreed that outdoor painting was where real painting occurred (the studio was “good for smoking in”). Hibbard had long been interested in snow-covered landscapes, submitting one of his earliest, February Thaw, to the National Academy. He acknowledged a debt to the winter landscapes of Willard Metcalf, specifically the technique of creating a veil of delicately-toned colors, one placed next to another, to describe light and shadow on snow. In his early canvases, Hibbard practiced a similar technique that produced a delicate pointillist feeling, which he called “broken color.” Equally important was Metcalf’s practice of painting outside in the middle of winter; Hibbard’s snow scenes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains painted during his honeymoon in 1925, as well as his Vermont scenes, attest to his love for painting in harsh conditions. Hibbard often trekked many hours before finding his ideal subject matter under the right conditions. By the 1930s, Hibbard spent winter months in Vermont, and the rest of the year in Rockport, where he established the Rockport Summer School of Drawing and Painting and grew to become a legendary member of the North Shore artist colony and even the Rockport baseball team. Each spring, Hibbard was responsible for choosing the exact shade of red that the town would paint the fishing shack commonly referred to as Motif #1. A leader in this community, he was also active in nearby Boston, and in 1965 the Guild of Boston Artists, where Hibbard had exhibited for 45 years, mounted a retrospective exhibition of his work. About the exhibition, R. H. Ives Gammell (a leading teacher of the Boston School of painters) commented: “Paintings by Aldro T. Hibbard recall the artistic standards for which the Boston painters were nationally known throughout the first quarter of our century. The exhibition...includes many of the artist’s finest landscapes which are of a quality no painter now living, here or abroad, could remotely approach.” Hibbard influenced Rockport artists including Emile Gruppe, Tom Nicholas...
