Alfred Augustus Glendening Snr Figurative Paintings

British, 1840-1921

British painter Alfred Augustus Glendening, Sr. captured luminous, sunlit scenes in striking landscape paintings of his native country during the 19th century.

Glendening is believed to have been born in Greenwich around 1840. Although it is unknown whether or not he received any formal artistic training, he dedicated his life to becoming a painter after leaving his post as a railway clerk.

The expansive British Isles — from the English countryside and rolling Welsh hills to the dramatic mountains of Scotland — served as Glendening’s muse. He traveled extensively throughout Britain, capturing scenes of the River Thames, the southern counties of Surrey and Sussex and the lochs of the Scottish Highlands.

In addition to his landscape paintings and figurative works, Glendening’s oeuvre includes numerous animal paintings that feature pastoral landscapes dotted with cattle, sheep and deer, as well as tranquil scenes of ponds and streams with ducks and swans. His use of color and focus on accurately depicting natural light — characteristics that are typical of Impressionist art — are comparable to that of another well-known British landscape painter, Alfred de Bréanski, Sr.

Glendening received broad attention and recognition for his works. From 1865 to 1903, Glendening’s paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and the Manchester Art Gallery, to name a few. His son, Alfred Augustus Glendening, Jr., studied landscape painting under his father and was a well-known artist in his own right.

Today, Glendening’s paintings are highly sought by collectors of Victorian art and landscapes.

19th Century seascape oil painting of Douglas Harbour, Isle of Man
By William Edward Webb
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
William Edward Webb British, (1862-1903) Douglas Harbour, Isle of Man Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 21.5 inches x 37.5 inches Size including frame: 33 inches x 49 inches A busy quayside painting by William Edward Webb of Douglas Harbour on the Isle of man. Fishermen in boats can be seen preparing to head ashore as other figures make their way along the quayside. William Edward Webb was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire in 1862 to William Benjamin Webb and Ellen Butler. His father was a printer and an artist and it is highly likely he received tuition from him. Following the death of his mother, his father remarried and moved the family to Manchester sometime after 1871. By the 1880’s, Webb had started working as an artist and later set up a studio at 30 Exchange Buildings in Manchester. He began exhibiting at the Manchester City Art Gallery from 1890, where he showed more than 60 paintings during his lifetime. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy and Walker Art Gallery Liverpool from 1892. He married Clara Foster in 1899 and the couple lived at 1 Sylvan Grove, Chorlton Upon Medlock in South Manchester with their daughter Florrie. He became friends with the artist Walter Emsley (1860-1938) who also lived in Manchester. Although he spent the rest of his life in Manchester, Webb travelled throughout the UK painting coastal and marine scenes around the main ports and harbours. He spent a great deal of time in the Isle of Mann painting numerous scenes along the coast including views of Peel and Douglas Harbour, subjects he frequently returned to. Webb painted in a highly distinctive style; loose and informal but which manages to retain the sense of perspective. He struggled with ill health and depression throughout his life which sadly led to his suicide 9 November, 1903. In 1974, a retrospective exhibition was held at The Old Customs House and Old Solent House in Lymington, which brought a new found interest in his work. His paintings are now highly sought after and are represented in many collections and Museums including the Astley Hall...

Antique Scottish Highlands Signed Oil Painting Loch Tay Perthshire
By Francis E. Jamieson
Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire
"Loch Tay" by F. E. Jamieson (British 1895-1950) signed, lower corner with pseudonym "W. Richards" titled verso to canvas oil painting on canvas, unframed canvas: 16 x 24 inches Fine quality antique oil painting by the much admired and celebrated British artist F. E. Jamieson (1895-1950). The painting is signed by Jamieson to the lower right corner with his favoured pseudonym, "W. Richards". The painting captures this brooding Highland landscape and the deep and dark waters of Loch Tay, one of the most stunning lochs in Scotland. Loch Tay is a magnificent dark stretch of water, 15 miles (24 km) long and around 508 ft deep. It’s the largest loch in Perthshire and one of the deepest in Scotland. To the north, the loch is flanked by the impressive bulk of the Ben Lawers mountain range, much of which is designated as a National Nature Reserve. The main A827 road runs high above the loch, west from Kenmore. The contours are gentler on the southern shore and Sustrans Cycle Route Number 7 runs along a quiet unclassified road. It's hard to believe that ancient settlers once lived on Loch Tay, inhabiting artificially created islands known as crannogs. There are eighteen crannogs on Loch Tay, most are now submerged but a large crannog near the northern shore at Kenmore can be clearly seen. This was the ancient burial place of Queen Sybilla, wife of Alexander King...

Women walking by stop to listen, a man carrying a sack has stopped to watch the rider, people are in the Inn doorway, and one is looking out the window. Children pause their playing. Alfred Augustus Glendening, River Landscape With Cottage Boatman
By Alfred Augustus Glendening Senior
Located in Cheltenham, GB
This charming early 20th-century oil painting by English artist Alfred Augustus Glendening (1840-1921) depicts a picturesque river view with a rowing boat and cottage. Glendening was a distinguished painter of landscapes. The sound of an oar gently entering water is near-audible in this richly picturesque environment. We’re unshackled from the burdens of industry, immersed in the ample delights of nature, and gently warmed by radiant sunlight breaking through voluminous clouds. Oh to live there, under the thatch of a nestled cottage, where each changing season is just as decorous as the last. Born in Hampton on Thames, London, Glendening was raised in an area popular with Victorian artists. The river, with its zig-zagging steamboats and silvery waters, provided ample inspiration for a young impressionable mind. This fascinating environment delivered the building blocks for his artistic development, and one can imagine him sketching on the riverbank along with other painters. It would take a little time before he turned to art as a career but, once he pursued his calling, success was inevitable. Travel during the mid-19th century was becoming a little easier thanks to the emerging rail network, and Glendening filled his sketchbooks on various cross-country trips. In 1864, he debuted at The Royal Society of British Artists with a view from Cumbria’s picturesque Lake District. The following year, exhibiting ‘A Cornfield, Kent’ at the Royal Academy. Many of his works were centred around shimmering water with the Isle of Wight another frequent destination. Soon, the rising middle classes took note and he became a firm favourite - views in North Wales, the Highlands, Surrey, and Devon captured with a deft touch. His approach was predominantly naturalistic and lacked the grandiosity of many early Victorian painters. His tranquil vignettes are skilfully observed with dapples of light dancing across reflected foliage. The occasional bird picked out with weight and movement. Glendening’s exquisite draughtsmanship was matched by a keen understanding of tone and value, resulting in balanced compositions with blissful moods. By 1903, he’d exhibited 47 works at the Royal Academy - quite an achievement for a late starter. Various museums hold examples, including at Southampton and Newport. Monogrammed/dated in the lower right and held in a gilt frame, which is probably original. Labels & Inscriptions: Framer’s label on reverse along with a supplier’s canvas stamp. Provenance: Private collection, UK. Artist’s auction maximum: £32,000 for ‘Bramber Castle’, Oil on canvas, Christie’s, 19th Century Pictures...
