Benjamin Williams Leader Paintings

English, 1831-1923
Benjamin Williams Leader entered the Royal Academy Schools from 1856 and exhibited his first painting at the summer exhibition the following year. Leader would go on to become one of the most celebrated landscape artists of the Victorian age and at the height of his fame his paintings commanded the highest prices of any British artist. He exhibited at the Royal Academy every year from 1857 to 1922, an unbroken 65 continuous years, which still stands as a record today. Benjamin Williams Leader was elected as an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1883, and an Academician in 1898. He also exhibited abroad, winning a gold medal at the Paris Salon and awarded the Legion of Honour in 1889. Examples of Leader’s work can be seen in Birmingham and Manchester Art Galleries, and the Victoria and Albert Museum and Tate Gallery in London.

By Benjamin Williams Leader

Oil on panel, signed and dated 1894 in the lower left and inscribed on the reverse. The frame measures 15.25" x 19.25". Leader was born in Worcester as Benjamin Leader Williams, the son, and first child of eleven children, of notable civil engineer Edward Leader Williams (1802–79) and Sarah Whiting (1801–88). His father was described as a "non conformist dissenter" and his mother was a Quaker – their marriage in an Anglican church resulted in them being disowned by the Society of friends. Leader's father was a keen amateur artist – a friend of John Constable – and Benjamin would often accompany him on sketching trips along the banks of the River Severn. His brother, also Edward Leader Williams, later became a notable civil engineer who was knighted for his work, and is now mainly remembered for designing Manchester ship canal...

A Hazy Morning on the Welsh Hills
By Benjamin Williams Leader
Located in Wiscasett, ME
Oil on artist panel, signed and dated lower left. It measures 19.75" x 22.75" including the frame, which is likely the original. Benjamin Williams Leader RA (12 March 1831 – 22 March 1923) was an English landscape painter. The inspiration for these early works was the countryside around Worcester itself, "the cottages, farmhouses, lanes, hedgerows and churches, so exceedingly picturesque and beautiful". However, Leader did not finish his course of studies at the R. A, nor did he need to – his paintings proved to be in great demand by wealthy buyers and he achieved an enviable degree of commercial success within only a few years of his first sale. In 1857 he changed his name to Benjamin Williams Leader to distinguish himself from the many other painters with the surname Williams. In autumn of that year he travelled to Scotland, and painted A Quiet pool in Glen Falloch...

Outstanding Scottish landscape from the late 19th to early 20th century oil on canvas. Long desiring to compete with the artistic endeavors of England, Scotland was making sure to make its mark, investing heavily in its artists. Indeed, Frazer would attend the acclaimed Royal Scottish Academy to receive his art education, intended to compete with English schools such as the Royal Academy in London. When his studies were complete, he would then base himself out of Edinburgh as he pursued a professional career. Country Cottage
By Abraham Hulk the Younger
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Late 19th/early 20th century oil on canvas painting in the manner of Abraham Hulk the Younger (1851-1922), and George Vincent (1796-1832). These artists painted in the Dutch style, though both are British. Each has had experience with Dutch masters that influence their work. George Vincent’s work is perhaps even closer to this than Hulk’s. Vincent paints the trees and skies with the warm hues of light infused on the work. Here, the sky has blue but also a khaki or tan shade, roughed into the blue and white. It is an unusual color in skies, yet Vincent shows us the light through clouds castingva darker shade. The trees are varied greens but also yellowed leaves, as in autumn. Presented in a period decorative gilt frame, the painting is of a cottage in a woodland with cattle by a pond, a little black dog and man and a woman standing by. In the distance is a glimpse of a river and grasses, framed by trees and an overcast sky. Hulk is renowned for his treatment of the changing season from summer to autumn, and the golden leaves and fading greens in this painting suggest this changing time of year. Hulk is the son of a well known Dutch maritime...

Leger & Son, Bond St, London. 1961 Benjamin Williams Leader was born in Worcester, his father was a keen amateur artist - a friend of the artist John Constable and studied art at Worcester School of Design and later at the Royal Academy. He painted the landscapes and scenes between the Severn Valley, Worcestershire, and Wales, in particular, exhibited to much acclaim at the RA 1865, was 'Autumn's Last Gleam' and later in 1881 'February Fill Dyke', following which he became an associate (ARA) and then a Royal Academician (RA) in 1898.
