Bernard Buffet was born on July 10, 1928, in Paris. He was a French painter of Expressionism and a member of the anti-abstract art group L'homme Témoin. He studied art at the École Nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts and worked in the studio of the painter Eugène Narbonne. Buffet died on October 4, 1999, in Tourtour, France.

When we mention Bernard Buffet, we instinctively think of his tortured portraits and dark representations of human emotions. However, his work presents a much richer and more complex dimension, such as this less conventional canvas, which, instead of focusing on characters, captures a Parisian scene in a landscape format. In this work, a view of the Seine and the sky, a fragment of the Eiffel Tower blending into a green that seems largely fantasized, a bridge and a total absence of human figures launch the viewer into a visual meditation of the secrets that reside at the heart of the City of Lights.
The artist uses black not simply as a color but as a proper tool for sculpting. Shapes are drawn and delineated, contrasting with washed-out colors such as blue and green. Black symbolizes the mystery and inaccessibility of the emotions that the artist seeks to express. Unlike his other works, adding characters to tell a story, Buffet, with this piece, appears more interested in the elements and structural aspects of the composition itself.

Pluie a Venice is painted in Hambourg's preferred palette of muted blue-green, grey, and gold with splashes of ruby red, deep blue, and emerald green. The soft colors work well for beach scenes and rainy days such as the ones portrayed in this painting. The impressionistic scene shows multiple pedestrians strolling down the boardwalk, shielding themselves from the rain with colorful umbrellas that provide pops of color and balance the overcast sky.
The background contains a three-masted ship and Piazza San Marco's famous bell tower and Basilica. Hambourg uses the minimum number of brushstrokes necessary to portray ships, seagulls, buildings and people as well as reflections on the glistening sidewalk. The brushstrokes in the sky have an interesting texture that is controlled yet carefree and there is heavy impasto throughout. His portrayal is both realistic and romanticized.
Hambourg was clearly influenced by the great Impressionist artists of earlier generations, perhaps none more than the one with a direct connection to his family. Hambourg's wife, Nicole Rachet, was born into a family with a large collection of works by Impressionist master Eugene Boudin. Rachet's grandfather was a contemporary and friend of Boudin's, and a collector of his work. In their later years, Hambourg and Rachet donated over 300 canvases by Boudin and other artists to the Eugene Boudin Museum in Honfleur, France. Once considered 20th-century France's most important painter, Bernard Buffet's stark and dramatic style defined the existential mood of the Post-War era. The present work, entitled Les Rails, was composed in 1982, decades after he had achieved an unparalleled level of artistic celebrity in Paris. In it, a train station and tracks are reduced to the essentials. Buffet's works are instantly recognizable for the harsh black contours delineating his subjects. The artist's imagery, at once direct and indelibly haunting, reflects his renowned avant-garde attitude.
Part of the artistic group known as "L'homme Témoin" ("The Witness-Men"), Buffet's canvases were in direct opposition to the ideals of abstraction, favoring to instead express feelings rather than physical reality. Here, Buffet applies his distinctively personal style to a seemingly abandoned line of buildings, paring the barren cityscape down to its most basic elements. The rich, dark colors, the haunting grey sky, and the harsh, bold lines combine to present a visceral visual masterpiece.
