Broyhill Side Tables

American

Founded during the 1920s, the Broyhill Furniture Company was one of the stalwart North Carolina makers of mid-priced, traditional wooden furnishings, and it served American families well. The Colonial Revival style — chairs with turned legs, beds with split pediment headboards — had always been the company’s stock in trade. But the vintage Broyhill bedroom furniture, dressers and cabinets of the postwar era are quite popular with today’s fans of mid-century modern design — particularly those who enjoy more flamboyant stylings, such as those of Adrian Pearsall.

For collectors of a certain type, Broyhill is most admired for its brief foray into the contemporary furnishings of the late 1950s and ‘60s. In 1957, responding to changing tastes, the firm launched its Broyhill Premier line with the Sculptra series.

Sculptra pieces featured decorative molding with a square-within-a-square motif and horizontal cat’s eye-shaped drawer pulls. Five years later, Broyhill introduced the Brasilia furniture group, inspired by the Oscar Niemeyer architecture for the brand-new Brazilian capital. The collection made its debut at the Seattle World’s Fair.

The cabinet door fronts of vintage Broyhill Brasilia pieces feature moldings based on the sweeping colonnades and parabolic curves of such buildings as the Palácio da Alvorada (“Palace of the Dawn”), the presidential residence. As you will see on 1stDibs, Broyhill created a striking and spirited line of furnishings that will make a happy keynote in any Atomic Age-inspired interior.

Ohio retailer Big Lots acquired the rights to the Broyhill name and related trademarks in 2019.

Raymond Loewy Inspired Green Chapter One Nightstand by Broyhill Premier
By Raymond Loewy, Broyhill
Located in Chattanooga, TN
The body and base have been fully refinished: wood structure sanded, primed, and painted in a bright white lacquer that revives the crisp contrast so loved in the Chapter One line. The two drawer fronts are original molded plastic in dark lime green, their injection-formed curves and original texture preserved. The laminate top has been buffed to a high gloss, reflecting ambient light and amplifying the piece’s sculptural surfaces. Wear is minimal and respectful: the green plastic doors show some minor imperfections consistent with age, visible only under close inspection; the laminate top bears very light surface scuffing — again, only where someone might lean or set objects. Overall condition is very good, showing both testament to its vintage roots and clarity of restoration. This is more than a small bedside piece — it’s a design icon in microcosm. Its plastic mold fronts and chromed or gloss accents evoke the work of designers like Raymond Loewy, whose influence underpins much of Broyhill’s Chapter One line. The curves, gloss, and contrast make it ideal to pair with stark modern furnishings, mirrored or chrome accessories, or rooms that lean toward graphic color. Collectors drawn to landmark production furniture, futuristic plastic mold work, or anything in the rarified orbit of Space Age vintage will recognize this piece’s rarity: a well-restored original drawer front, clean structural form, and color contrast that still feels playful and confident. Well it’s 2025, and Broyhill’s Chapter One Collection is officially harder to find and more sought after than the Raymond Loewy orginals. With all due respect to Raymond Loewy, there really is something magical about the Chapter One line. Maybe they’re just more fun and approachable. Maybe it’s the proportions and practicality. Regardless, they’re one of our favourite collections of all time. The restoration team pulled no punches on this nightstand, and the end result exceeded our expectations. Every inch of the wood body and base was professionally sanded, primed and painted to match the original bright white. The laminate top and dark lime green molded plastic drawer fronts were finally buffed and polished to a glassy shine. It’s tough to see these go, but we know it will be loved. Broyhill’s Chapter one collection borrowed from the plastic mold injection designs made famous by legendary designer Raymond Loewy. Like Loewy, this Chapter One Green Nightstand...

Red / Orange "Bittersweet" Chapter One Drawer End Table by Broyhill Premier
By Raymond Loewy, Broyhill
Located in Chattanooga, TN
Well it's 2022, and Broyhill's Chapter One Collection is officially harder to find and more sought after than the Raymond Loewy orginals. With all due respect to Raymond Loewy, there really is something magical about the Chapter One line. Maybe they're just more fun and approachable. Maybe it's the proportions and practicality. Regardless, they're one of our favourite collections of all time. And to make it all that much sweeter (wink wink), this is the first red/orange "Bittersweet" piece we've ever had. This particular model, the "6317-14 Drawer End Table" was one of only a few Chapter One pieces to be offered in this color. After 12 years and several yellows and greens, the red / orange, known by their catalog description as "Bittersweet" has evaded us until now. Once in our grasps, the restoration team pulled no punches, and the end result exceeded our expectations. Every inch of painted wood and metal was professionally sanded primed and painted to match the original bright white. The laminate top and molded plastic drawer front was finally buffed and polished to a glassy shine. It's tough to see this one go, but we know it will be loved. Original Catalog Description: Chapter One is the beginning of a new era in furniture...
