Merida’s international ties connect Paris to Mexico to the United States with his travels throughout Latin America and Europe. He spent a considerable amount of time in Paris where he associated with artists such as Picasso and Modigliani, Camarosa and Van Dongen, an important period in his own development as an artist as it contributed greatly to the formulation of his personal style. Merida also worked with Diego Rivera and Rufino Tamayo in Mexico, influences also evident in the feel of his work.
Merida was a sponge and he soaked up Cubism, Fauvism, Expressionism and probably the work of such artists as Goncharova and Leon Bakst.
