Cassina Furniture

Italian

Furniture manufacturer Cassina is a prolific design house for more reasons than one: It not only owns the licenses to an exquisite collection of iconic chairs, sofas, tables and other pieces from the 20th and 21st centuries but also produces original works that are characterized by innovation and the finest Italian craftsmanship.

Cassina’s illustrious legacy includes being one of the first companies to bring industrial design to Italy in the 1950s. Founded in 1927 in Meda, Italy, by brothers Cesare and Umberto Cassina, the Italian manufacturing giant originally specialized in bespoke woodworking. In nearly a century since its founding, the company has shown incredible foresight about design trends and the evolution of technology.

In 1964, Cassina signed an exclusive licensing agreement to manufacture furniture by Le Corbusier and his collaborators — such as the LC4 chaise longue made with trailblazing French modernist Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret — a move that would shape the future of the company. Cassina’s I Maestri collection is an ongoing initiative to restyle landmark designs from the 20th century, such as pieces by Gerrit Rietveld (the Red and Blue armchair from 1918), Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Erik Gunnar Asplund, Franco Albini and Frank Lloyd Wright. The company preserves the intentions and original styles of their designs but adds updated techniques, materials and processes — rendering them the best possible combination of past, present and future. The brand has also worked with contemporary icons like Zaha Hadid, Gio Ponti and Philippe Starck.

Cassina’s original designs are cutting-edge as well. They include pieces for everyday use, the development of which is guided by comfort and the marriage of Italian craftsmanship with industrial technology.

Some of Cassina’s pieces, both from its contemporary and I Maestri collections, can be found in the collections of museums like the Museum of Modern Art and the Vitra Design Museum. In 2014, the company became part of Haworth in its acquisition of Italian furniture group Poltrona Frau, and in 2015, Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola joined Cassina as its art director, leading the brand into its next century of inventive style.

Asian Inspired Sengu Low Coffee Table by Patricia Urquiola for Cassina
By Cassina, Patricia Urquiola
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Sengu Coffee Table designed by Patricia Urquiola. Manufactured by Cassina (Italy). AN ASIAN INVITATION Asian-inspired, this design coffee table by Patricia Urquiola is a domestic architecture enhanced by the layering of different materials. The system of primary and secondary oval beams that supports the top of this table, ideal for a modern living room, draws upon the ritual reconstruction of Japanese shrines to define an elegant piece of furniture with Far-Eastern fascination. Supported by a solid wood base, the rectangular or round top is available in extra-clear glass, smoked glass or marble. BASE In solid wood: Canaletto walnut, natural oak or oak stained black. TOP Transparent extra-clear or smoked glass, or marble: white Carrara, Grigio Carnico, Verde Alpi, Rosso Levanto, Calacatta Gold, or Nero Marquina, with matt finish. Inspired by Asian influences ‒ a theme that often recurs in the Cassina collections ‒ and especially by the ritual reconstruction of Japanese shrines through the use of different materials, like the other pieces in the Sengu family, the Sengu Coffee Table, designed by Patricia Urquiola, is envisioned as an exquisitely layered and sophisticated home architecture. The base, crafted with a grid of primary and secondary oval solid wood beams, echoes the shapes found in the Sengu Sofa...

Questions About Cassina Furniture
  • Lotus Gallery
    Lotus GallerySeptember 23, 2020

Antique is usually defined as being over 100 years old. Vintage is a bit more subjective, with some saying anything over 20 years old is vintage, while others state something must be over 50 years old to be considered vintage.

  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 7, 2024
The difference between antique and antic is that the words have completely different meanings, even though they look similar. Antique is the term for items that are more than 100 years old. The difference between antique and retro is the age of the pieces that the terms describe. Antique is the term for jewelry, furniture, home goods and decorative objects that are 100 years old or older. Anything between 20 and 99 years old is vintage, while things produced in the last 20 years are contemporary. Retro means that something looks like it's from another era. In some cases, an item described as retro may actually be an antique or vintage piece, or it may be a contemporary item inspired by the design styles of the past. What 1920s furniture is called depends on its style. However, the most prominent design style of the decade was Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship. Art Deco furniture often featured bold geometric lines, floral forms, shimmering mirrored finishes, sleek metal accents, and the use of expensive materials such as shagreen or marble as well as exotic woods such as mahogany, ebony and zebra wood. On 1stDibs, find a diverse assortment of Art Deco furniture.

To identify old furniture, search inconspicuous areas for maker's marks. Look under seats and tabletops, inside and underneath drawers, on bases and backs and in other hidden areas. Most vintage and many antique furnishings will feature some type of marking, which you can look up using trusted online resources to determine who produced them. When no maker's mark is present, experts recommend consulting a certified appraiser or experienced antique dealer. On 1stDibs, shop a large selection of antique and vintage furniture.
