Charles Edmund Brock was a widely published English painter, line artist and book illustrator, who signed most of his work C.E. Brock. He received his first book commission at the age of 20. He became very successful and illustrated books for authors such as Jonathan Swift, William Thackeray, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and George Eliot. Brock also contributed pieces to several magazines such as The Quiver, The Strand and Pearsons. In the realm of illustration, Brock is best known for his linework, but he was also a skilled colorist. As a painter he received plaudits for the realism and vibrancy he created in his work. Only a small quantity of his known paintings have been located.

An fine period watercolor, dated 1910, an illustration by Charles Edmund Brock (English, 1870-1938). This, from a semi-autobiographical novel written by William Makepeace Thackeray, "Pendennis", in full "The History of Pendennis: His Fortunes and Misfortunes, His Friends and His Greatest Enemy." The novel was published in monthly installments from 1848 to 1850 and published in book form in two volumes in 1849–50. Below this image is a quote from "Pendennis," Chapter VI, "Captain Costigan leaves Pendennis & Miss Fotheringay at the great window looking out into the Deans Garden". Signed lower left. PROVENANCE Private Collector, Seville, Spain José Villegas Cordero (Seville, August 26, 1844-Madrid, November 9, 1921) was a Spanish painter. He directed the Prado Museum between 1901 and 1918. He was the brother of the painter Ricardo Villegas Cordero. He began his apprenticeship very young with José María Romero, with whom he remained for two years until entering the School of Fine Arts in Seville, where he was under the tutelage of Eduardo Cano. In 1860, when he was only 16 years old, he sold his work Little Philosophy for 2,000 reais at the Seville Exhibition. In 1867 he traveled to Madrid, where he entered Federico Madrazo's studio.
