French, 1902-1992
Charles Kiffer, born in France, was well known for his figures, paintings, prints, posters, almost all devoted to theater, music hall and circus. From 1918, he attended the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1923, he created, for his pleasure, the portrait of Maurice Chevalier who entrusted him with the production of posters for his following shows in 1926 and 1927. From then on, he became the regular poster artist for the singer and created 13 posters for him. He illustrated posters for many stars like Georges Guétary (1933), Charles Trénet, Edith Piaf (1936), Yves Montand, Rina Ketty, Gaby Morlay in 1939. Kiffer also created many sets and stage curtains for the Casino de Paris. More than 65 years after his first poster, Kiffer still works in his studio on the Ile Saint-Louis in Paris, where he likes to entertain his friends and the great contemporary artists.

Born to Lithuanian Jewish parents, Levine grew up in the South End of Boston, where he observed a street life composed of European immigrants and a prevalence of poverty and societal ills, subjects which would inform his work. He first studied drawing with Harold K. Zimmerman from 1924-1931. At Harvard University from 1929 to 1933, Levine and classmate Hyman Bloom studied with Denman Ross. As an adolescent, Levine was already, by his own account, "a formidable draftsman". In 1932 Ross included Levine's drawings in an exhibition at the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard, and three years later bequeathed twenty drawings by Levine to the museum's collection. Levine's early work was most influenced by Bloom, Chaim Soutine, Georges Rouault, and Oskar Kokoschka. Along with Bloom and Karl Zerbe, he became associated with the style known as Boston Expressionism.

This is an original 19th century 1st edition octavo hand-colored McKenney and Hall lithograph of a Native American entitled " Shar-I-Tar-Ish, A Pawnee Chief", lithographed by J. T. Bowen after a painting by Charles Bird King and published by Rice and Hart in Philadelphia in 1848. Shar-I-Tar-Ish's portrait has a reddish hue from the feathers in his headdress and amulet chain, with a brownish taupe color of the upper trim of his costume. He is wearing his presidential peace medal. He has a very serious and thoughtful expression.
This original McKenney and Hall hand-colored lithograph is printed on a sheet measuring 10.38" high and 7" wide. There are faint smudges in the margins. The print is otherwise in very good condition. The original descriptive text pages, 33-34, from McKenney and Hall's 19th century publication are included.

This is an original 19th century hand-colored folio-sized lithographic portrait of a Native American entitled "Tah-Chee, A Cherokee Chief", from McKenney and Hall's 'History of the Indian Tribes of North America'. It was lithographed by J. T. Bowen after a painting by Charles Bird King and published by E. C. Biddle in Philadelphia in 1838.
Tahchee's name translates to Dutch in Cherokee, and he became known as William Dutch. He was born in 1790 in the Cherokee Nation, which is now in a portion of Alabama. Tahchee became known as a skilled warrior and leader among his people, and he was eventually appointed as a chief of the Cherokee Nation "Old Settlers". During his time as chief, Tahchee was a rival of the Osage people and he worked to protect the Cherokee people and their land from encroachment by white settlers. He was a strong advocate for maintaining Cherokee sovereignty and cultural traditions, even as pressure mounted from the United States government to remove the Cherokee from their ancestral lands. Kiffer's mother taught piano and his father, a tailor, working for many comedians. Exposed early in the artistic world, Kiffer began to draw and paint caricatures of actors.
From 1918, he attended the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He designed in 1923 for his own pleasure, the portrait of Maurice Chevalier, who later entrusted him with the realization of posters of his shows following in 1926 and 1927. This became the poster of Chevalier and he was commissioned for thirteen more posters until 1963.
Charles Kiffer, fascinated also by printing processes, he produced own lithographs from 1929's , sometimes in collaboration with various Parisian workshops. He illustrated many of the posters for stars like George Guétary (1933), Charles Trenet, Edith Piaf (1936), Yves Montand, Rina Ketti, Gaby Morley in 1939. He also designed in the fields of dance, theater and circus, big names like Josephine Baker, Brigitte Bardot, Mistinguett, and the clown Alex Porto.
During the Second World War he was engaged in the Rouen region, where he designed and painted camouflage the French aircraft. After the war he returned to show business. In 1949, Kiffer was the radio host Zappy Max and later artists Gilbert Becaud, Annie Cordy, the Compagnons de la Chanson ... From 1955, he made a dozen posters for the mime Marcel Marceau.
Kiffer also created many decorations and stage curtains for the Casino de Paris. Over sixty-five years after his first poster, Kiffer was still working in his studio on the Ile Saint-Louis in Paris where he liked to entertain friends and contemporary artists.
Centre de Toulouse Poster did a tribute in 1990, his last exhibition of posters.
