Charles Pachter Figurative Prints

Canadian, b. 1942

One of Canada’s leading contemporary artists, Charles Pachter is a painter, printmaker, sculptor, designer, historian, and lecturer. His work is pursued by significant private and public collections.

Born in Toronto, Pachter studied art history at the University of Toronto, French literature at the Sorbonne and painting and graphics at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. His work has been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum, and the McMichael Gallery. Pachter is represented in public and private collections throughout Canada, and internationally. He has held solo exhibitions in France, Germany, Japan, the UK, and India.

Pachter worked at Expo 67 in Montreal supervising the installation of 60 contemporary sculptures from around the world. He taught printmaking at the University of Calgary in 1969–70. He spearheaded Toronto’s Queen Street West revival in the 1970s and ‘80s by restoring 20 old buildings into facilities for arts usage.

Pachter is an Officer of the Order of Canada, a Chevalier of France’s Order of Arts and Letters, a member of the Order of Ontario and holds honorary doctorates from Brock University, OCAD University and the University of Toronto, where he is a Senior Fellow at Massey College. He is a recipient of the Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals. While often referred to as “Canada's Warhol,” he has his own unique voice.

Pachter’s paintings are in the Portrait Gallery of Canada, the Canadian Embassy in Washington, Canada House in London, the Parliament Buildings, the Prime Minister’s residence, the Governor General's home and the Embassy of France in Ottawa.

Streetcar Circus 5/20 - figurative, playful, pop-art, editioned lithograph
By Charles Pachter
Located in Bloomfield, ON
For pop artist Charles Pachter, the Toronto streetcar symbolizes the urban landscape he calls home. The iconic image of the streetcar whose tracks have criss-crossed Canada’s largest city for decades was once known as ‘the red rocket’ because of its deep red paint colour. In this lithograph the bright colours of a large image of the back of the streetcar in hot pink and blue with three more smaller images of streetcars in classic red, yellow and one in green pop against a black backdrop. Pachter is a much-admired Canadian artistic polymath, his colourful pop artwork merging playful even irreverent elements with deeply iconic imagery. “….a good art critic would compare it with Warhol’s soup cans...

Canite Tuba in Sion - Lithograph - 1964
By Salvador Dalí
Located in Roma, IT
Canite tuba in Sion is an artwork realized in 1964. It is part of Biblia Sacra vulgatæ editionis published by Rizzoli-Mediolani between 1967 and 1969. Color lithograph on heavy rag paper. Signed and dated on plate on the lower right margin. 49 x 35 cm. Perfect conditions. Prov. Private collection, Genova (Italy). The title of the artwork is taken from a verse of the the Book of Joel: "Canite tuba in Sion, ululate in monte sancto meo". The artwork represents a standing figure with a trumpet. The figure is stylized and the lines of contour are undefined. The colors express a sense of vivacity and energy. Salvador Dalí (Figueres, 1904 – Figueres, 1989) is considered one of the most versatile and prolific artists of the XX century and the founding father of Surrealism. In the course of his long career, he successfully experimented with sculpture, fashion, writing, and filmmaking. In his early use of organic morphology, his work bears the stamp of Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró. His work is also characterized by a fascination with classical art, manifested in the realistic style and religious symbolism of his latest works. Dalí was born near Barcelona to a middle class family. He soon demonstrated an interest in art, and, at the age of 18, he attended the Special Painting, Sculpture and Engraving School of San Fernando in Madrid. His eccentricity was notorious, and at first even more famous than his works. When he traveled to Paris, he met Pablo Picasso in his studio and took inspiration from Cubism. In 1928, he collaborated with Buñuel on Un Chien Andalou...

This pop art print of a Canadian flag is by Charles Pachter. One of Canada’s leading contemporary artists, Charles Pachter is renowned for his iconic pop art images that often celebrate our national pride. In this silkscreen print, the clean, graphic lines of the Canadian flag on a pole fill the picture frame as it appears to flutter in the breeze. A deep blue background provides a rich contrast to the red and white flag drawing the viewer’s eye—one of a series. “The power and paradox of Pachter’s art is the way you sense a national character simply by standing in front of his work.” Tom Smart, writer...

Night: The Canvas House
By Charles Pachter
Located in Bloomfield, ON
Giclee edition 1/1. Framed dimension 37" x 32" Pachter has often used the tent as a symbol of the country, of military history, and the journey implied by the use of the tent, and of course, the primary symbolism of the pyramid. In true Pachter form, he manages to challenge and evoke all these ideas with riveting simplicity - especially with the black and white imagery. One of Canada’s leading contemporary artists, Charles Pachter is a painter, printmaker, sculptor, designer, historian, and lecturer. His work is pursued by significant private and public collections. Born in Toronto, he studied art history at the University of Toronto, French literature at the Sorbonne, and painting and graphics at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. McClelland & Stewart publications include an illustrated book on his life and work, and The Journals of Susanna Moodie, his celebrated collaboration with poet Margaret Atwood. His murals of Hockey Knights in Canada can be seen in Toronto’s College Subway Station. Mr. Pachter lives and works in downtown Toronto in an award-winning studio designed by Canadian architect Stephen Teeple. His work is on permanent display in his adjoining Moose Factory Gallery. The Journals of Susanna Moodie 60/100
By Charles Pachter
Located in Bloomfield, ON
A rare opportunity for collectors of exquisite paper works, painstakingly created. In 1852 Susanna Moodie published her journals in an effort to educate other English women about the hardships of establishing a life in Canada. In 1962, these were reprinted as Roughing It In the Bush. In 1970, Margaret Atwood published The Journals of Susanna Moodie – a book of poems based on the Moodie Book. Charles Pachter had illustrated her previous books of poetry, and was moved to illustrate the Journals – a project he completed in 1980. Two master Italian printers worked with Pachter for the better part of a year to create the 120 completed boxed sets of the work. Each one contains 28 hand printed pages. This wasn’t just an illustration – it was an amplification of the original poems. It has been republished in a small book format in 2014 by Cormorant Press. Only 4 original copies remain – the others are in public collections or private hands. "This is truly the most magnificent book ever to be produced in Canada, a benchmark in the history of Canadian printing. It is immensely gratifying to find how Pachter's graphics so extend, expand and explore the inner meaning of Atwood's text." Beth Miller...
